I was so sad reading from start to finish - the joy of a new toy, and the obvious pain that toy has bought. It is one of my biggest worries, being predominantly a solo rider I am constantly aware of how exposed I am should I have an off somewhere where I have no idea where I am. I have just done a big ride through there - most of the time I had no idea where I was - just taking random side roads and heading in a generally southerly direction.....how to minimise that risk? Dunno. I like the GPS phone idea (my new phone has that), and agree I always charge my phone up to max.

Fucken oath mate, I'm now making sure my cel phone is properly charged and in accessable spot whenever I go for a ride. I can't think of anything scarieir than what our little mate went through and doubt very much I'd be as calm or level headed in the same situation.
Without going too far off topic, I always think hard about where to put the phone when going for a ride. Accessible (outer) is good, but not so good if it gets munted in an off. My winter liner has a cell pocket inside it, and in summer I drop it inside my front pocket of the trou. Still not really sure.
Keep on smiling Katiepie!

Sad to hear about her crash, she was lucky she had cellphone coverage. Scary to think that there isn't any cellphone reception in a lot of places I ride, even on some state highways. Hope Katie heals quickly.

No I red rep'd you due to the fact that you do not know what you are on about.
Seriously you need to get more facts before posting.
Go into the hospital and ask her yourself.
And I am quite disgusted in the fact that you think that I only care about her well being because you think I want in.
Dont sweat it dude. I'll PM you why arguing with Alexis is a waste of time. Especially where Katie is concerned.
Got the message Onya, will help out.

Katiepie. Very sorry to hear of the accident, especially after such joy of a new toy.
Heal up well and behave while you are doing that. A mate had a full halo and chest armour after fracturing a vertebre and he healed up very well indeed.
The armour will provide ample space for sponsorship stickers and team autographs...
You have loads of help from the Wellie crew, so you will be well looked after!
Heal quickly and well!

Hey, I had no idea about this, and I'm so sorry to hear about it. I had no idea till I saw the "donations" thread that she'd even binned it. Dangerous beasts the R6: another guy I know binned his before christmas.
Heal up soon! or if not soon, well....

Thought I'd double post this from the other thread for you guys to mullover!!
Thanks Pie
Saw her today. She was really tired and I am thinking might be a good idea to coordinate a regular shift to see her so she is not overwhelmed. Could be arranged if people agree to wait at the desk on the hour, see whos there and work it out. I know she needs her sleep so maybe every even hour during the day, to visit about half an hour until she feels strong enough to cope with all her fans!

Yeah, can understand that.
I'm in Wellington on Monday for work and was going to divert into the hospital to say a quick hello. My day is pretty rigid with back to back meetings but I have managed to escape for a while and was going to go in at 11.00am. I wont be able to stay long but if that suits everyone then sweet with me.

Does anyone know where she was, exactly? I rode from Martinborough up Ponatahi Rd to Carterton late afternoon, hate to think I rode straight past her.
She turned off Para road and was on Waihakeke road heading toward Taumata island

I double parked the truck outside with the beacons on at lunchtime to drop in a little biker teddy we got for her. Was greeted with a huge smile and the same personality we all love, so much so she wouldn't let me get a word in telling me how good the appeal ride was on Saturday!
It will definitely take time, but I have no doubt whatsoever that she will bounce back as bright as ever. I pity the physio that will be hearing 'get me back on my bike'!

Knowing that one day, soon we hope, you will be reading all these posts and messages Katie.
Sat here and read every one of the posts since page three. You already know that everyone here is concerned for you and are all thinking of you and your journey back to life as we/you know it.
Theres no escaping the time it takes to heal from such injuries,so while lying around in the sun, reading those novels and getting a funny looking tan, don't dwell to long on what happened, remember what everyone here has said and done.
You will smile and that will brighten everyones day as it always has.
Get well freind Katiepie, come back rested and ready because there are so many people out here who want you to be well and have no cares and to ride with you on a glorious summers day in the sun.

Hi Katie....all I can say is im really 'bummed' about your situation, and just annoyed for you... as from what ive read, you are so passionate about your bikes, and that is just so great to see especially being a 'gal chick'.
And you being hospital ridden that is one biker rider chick down.....at the moment.
I really wish for you a great recovery, and please try not to expire your body by taking on to many visitors and trying to be to 'chipper' when you could let your body have a quiet moment and let it heal itself.
Having lots of rest will help for a speeder recovery. All the best, and hope to see you back about on your bike when your ready.

At Welly hospital, on the way in, just go through the barriers (take a ticket for the barrier to open) and there are loads of out of the way places to fit a bike into, in the underground carpark.
On the way out just take the righthand exit lane and you should easily fit through the gap between the barrier arm and the left lane (ergo, you don't need the ticket to get back out).

Your continued great attitude is an inspiration katiepie - http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4798112/You-ve-made-my-day-crash-victim-tells-rescuers ... and I love that your mum knows you are old enough to make up your own mind!!!
After any accident ... or incident people worry ... especially when they haven't fully understood the risks of being a rider. But you know its ok for them to worry it just shows the love that they have for you.
Heh that photo on the bike and then in hospital, you can see she is a fighter from the hospital photo... up up and away Katie... be a while for we ever get to wellington by then you will have figured out what went wrong, and fixed it... :) keep smiling, great attitude, I believe this young lady should be a inspiration for others that are in hospital to get better soon.

Its more a taste thing I think - the hospital is very worried about the complications to other patients if Ratti and nurse FM turn up again! I mean I'm relatively healthy and it made me ill - just imagine what could happen if you were actually sick to start with...
(no - well done, laughter is the best medicine)
I suspect shes going to be a bit sore for a few days at home. Not really knowing her domestic situation, is there anyone that can look in etc?

I heaved just worked my way through endless pages of love, fun and laughter that has successfully got my bawling my eyes out.
I am so overwhelmed. I am so in love with you all, I am so faaarking lucky.
I can not control these tears that poor so heavily after all of your comments. I am officially the happiest, luckiest and richest girl around to have you all in my life, and I truely couldn't be more overwhelmed or touched in my heart.
I am home - lying in bed so very awkwardly, trying to see the screen and typing with one hand.
I am alive and better than I have ever been in my entire life. Broken leg (I believe there are pins in it somewhere, broken arm, broken and fractured back and neck. And have never been so happy. My halo is screwed into my skull to prevent paralysis, am I am completely exhausted from walking on crutches all day with my broken bones, and holding the weight of the halo up with my neck. Happy to be in my bed? Hell yes as soon as I get off this computer.
I am crying. I am happy. I am so honored. I couldn't be more touched. I have the most incredible friends and family a person could ever ask for.
What happened? My memory is not proving to be helpful there. Will I ride again? Yes, and all going to plan it will be my beloved R6. Will I take my time? 100% yes. I now need to learn how to walk again and my eyesight has been fuzzy since the accident. One small step after another. I am off work until the halo comes off and unfortunately I will be lucky if I sill have a job to go to. My pups were well looked after, thanks Mairs!!! My mum has moved from Auckland as live in help for a few weeks, and I cant stop smiling.
To my family,my friends with me the first few days (one in particular who I believe I owe my life to - you know who you are) the rescue teams... Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You did not give up on me in searching. 5 hours til rescue is a feeling i cant describe (more hours than the papers have mentioned). Its because of all of you I am here, and I know how close a call this was for me).
Will write again soon but am so exhausted and need to get the pressure off this brace.

4th April 2011, 20:30
I had a re-check with a new doctor today at the Hutt Hopsital. It was a fantastic visit. They tightened the screws into my head for the halo. They then cut off the large cast on my leg to check how my injuries underneigh were doing as I've been in tears from very intense pain.
It's the first glimpse I have been able to have on whats going on with my leg. It seems that I do not have pins in my ancle as I was informed. But only a metal plate along the break down my fibular (spelling sorry?). They took out the stitches from my operation, and cleaned the wound. I was then expecting them to re-cast my leg. But, The doc decided to leave it off for good. I was blown away and absoluely thrilled! For me this means I can now bend in my halo brace. I can now dress myelf, I can now shower better and sleep better. So so happy for that decision. I tell ya, its going to be a very decent scar right down my leg, but I'm completely ok with that and it doenst worry me a bit.
I have had very intence pain shooting through my leg when i move it from horizontal position to vertical. Each morning I start off in tears for half an hour until it settles down. It's just a new pain that I will adapt to in good time, and I get through it once i have more weight on it and movement.
I also discovered I have a fractured scaptula which explains the pains i have been having my using my shoulder on the crutches. But, now that I know this, I know how to minamise that movement. Good to know huh? It made me laugh.
The halo looks like it be on for the full 3 months, but that time will fly by. From there I then have 2 months in a standard neck brace while i build up enough muscle in my neck to hold my head up again, as the halo has been doing it all for me.
Tonight I hade a shower, best I could. The halo can not get wet so its selective showering. But I have hired a seat to sit on in the shower, and I feel like a new person. I'm clean, wearing lovely clean clothes. I had to buy some tops today as I have to pull them all up over me waist due to the brace. So i am feeling fantastic. We are going to attmpt the wash a few sections of my hair on Wednesday. A tricky one as the contact srews into my skull can be easily infected but I reckon well should be able to make a good effort safely.
My mum is living with me as a live in carer. and is being truely exceptional. I cant thank her enough for all she is doing for me and the help she is giving me. I couldnt be home without her and I am so thankful.
I feel fantastic! Today is a very good day. Looking forward to my new found independance thanks to my free leg. No more track pants, I can wear normal cloths and feel like my old self again
Rock and roll, - what a great day!

You also made it into the latest BikeRider magazine issue. It's just a small news article (no photos) and doesn't mention your name. It won't contain any information you aren't already well familiar with!
Great to hear your progress. You might be able to get a grant for your mum being a carer? Just a thought.

I am sorry to say that I have suffered from complete memory loss of the accident, and the whole week that followed. Everything is a complete blank at it seems now that I was unconscious for at least an hour from a decent blow to the head. So I cant help there. Believe me, I REALLY wish I could. I more than any one want to know what happened, as I thought I had my head on my shoulders with settling in very gently to the R6, but it seems I will never know.
All I will say is I have read the police crash investigation report, and I was very pleased with how I was acting at the time.
Mistakes happen. I hope to try and learn from this, but alas if I can't remember a thing it will take me some time but I'm ok with time.
Sorry guys, wish I had more info. But I just don't know a thing. I went back to the accident sight to try and jog my memory but it didnt work at all. Who knows... this has become a new mystery in my life.

Unfortunatley the chair the hospital were trying to give me was far too big for my little shower, so I went and hired one to get my by and I'm so pleased I did. I purchased a "grabber" too as bending is limited and it helps me to dress myself etc.
Because I was atmitted to Wellington hospital, and I live in Upper Hutt, I wasn't allowed to take anything from them, and the hutt hospital has things that were far too big. I only live in a little house, but am getting on just fine with the items i did buy and hire. I brought new clothes and tops as everything has to go over my waist so the colder days are a bit tricky. Because of the halo, I can't wear jackerts or jumpers as i basically have no shoulders and they all fall off. So blankets have become very useful.
I inspected my helmet the other day for the first time. Some very strong impact damage to it, and the timing of it all makes sence that i was out like a light for a bit. I have fuzzy eyesight now, but I am putting that down to having the screws of the halo into my head, and everything is just a little out of foucs.
As for my approach to the new bike, i was one day away from booking into some training with Karel Pavich for her to help me with the transition. I can't say too much about the accident, but as I say from the police report, I am at ease that I did have my head on my shoulers that day, and I remember telling myself as i took off from the hill climb "take it easy. Gently, slowly, smoothly, look ahead, feel the bike, take time to learn it all again." I was big on this, it was so important to me as I knew just how much of a change it was for me. I by all means and not a silly rider. I do have much to learn, and I will take my time learning the basics again. In this case I feel that accidents can happen, and we can't always avoid them. I'll be back on biker later in the year, and going back to basics to get my head round it all again. No harm at all in doing that. Ill get there, with a big smile too!

As already said hun - dont beat yourself up about it and dont apologise. Those of us who know you (and many who dont), know that your approach to learning about your new bike was done in the safest and cautious possible way. You prob will never remember what happened that day but you have seen the crash site, seen the issues with that particular stretch of road. The one thing we will all learn from this is to never underestimate the roads we travel on. What appears to be a straight, innocuous stretch of road, can be a death trap in waiting. We are all so lucky that you survived the day and your gorgeous spirit remains as strong and as positive as it was before.
Your recovery sounds as though it will be a long slow process, but just do it as your body demands. Dont fit into anyone elses timetable or regime. You alone know what you are capable of. I know that when the time is right, you will be back on your bike again, and we will all be beside you, heading for the nearest garlic bread or wedges outlet.

Always impressed by your positivity Katie.
I did that very thing, repeating the Prorider level 1 course on the new bike a year after doing it the first time and at a different track. Well worth doing and recommend it to every rider keen to improve/identify bad riding habits and focus on a good full day of upskilling and fun. Repeating the course highlighted some key areas I need to improve on.
Will aim to do a Level 2 course next year all going well.
I look forward to hearing more of your recovery and hopefully your return to riding on a replacement bike if that is where life leads you.:scooter:

Not sure why I did turn left, that's the biggest issue I have with all this as I new the correct way was right. Look - not putting blame but I have a reason for asking... but do you think getting lost had anything to do with the accident. I'm a type 1 diabetic and I monitor that stuff all the time while i ride - I start making poor decisions, get lost etc and I stop and check blood sugars because it all goes down hill quickly.
Unexplainable accident after a day out may point to some underlaying 'something'.. dehydration, low / high blood sugars etc.
Just thought - we dont want this happening again - I'm still knackered from wood, not sure I can do that again ;-)

As mentioned, that direction is not like me. I cant exlain why I got lost. But I do believe something has made me keep going, when its rather obvious it was the wrong way. I'm a firm believer that for every bad thing that happens, something good comes out of it and usually sends your life in a totally new direction. Sometimes we won't be able to see the good for a long time. So you never know, that wrong direction may have been the right direction. And considering how bad it was, you'd expect something very, very good to come out of it all. Hope you find that good soon.

Have a chat with your GP. Some people, for example, get hypoclycemic (low blood sugars) without being diabetic, it really screws up the brain and interfers with decision making. Also - cough - sorry to mention it but your 'other' cycle can have an a effect as well. Gluten intolerance is another.
Speaking as a person who has to consider such things, I find I need to be a bit brutal with myself. If I'm not feeling quite up to sniff, I don't ride or kayak that day regardless of what I might be missing out on. I'm not perfect and I sometimes make miscalculations and have definately had those 'how the heck did that happen' moments. These are very very rare and I'm a lot better at managing them. Riff Raff or one of the medical types might have some clues or better info.
As for keeping going when you are obviously lost. Gleep - you have been hanging out with guys too long, you need to take extra female hormones and paint your bike pink...

Yes - although I seriously wonder if I'll live long enough to see the good stuff Sue ;-)
But I LOVE your sentiments mate, a hopeful attitude is a wonderfull asset in life.

The only motorcycle accident I have ever had - I left the road at speed after trying to dodge an obstacle while going just a little bit too quick, and dealing with a little bit of newbie brain-lock. I had been off my bike for a month with a badly twisted ankle and that day I was dosed to the eyeballs on really strong painkillers. My riding that day was absolutely epic - I was on such an amazing streak of cornering skill - it amazed me!
Spot my problem?
In the end, it's the same-old same-old process of identifying hazards and choosing to respond early to them, but sometimes they are not all they seem. Live and learn I guess. :woohoo:

I am sorry to say that I have suffered from complete memory loss of the accident, and the whole week that followed.
I bet part of the blank out afterwards is related to seeing Max in that Nurse uniform. The brain has a way of protecting itself...only natural behavior by the sounds of things :)
... Because of the halo, I can't wear jackerts or jumpers as i basically have no shoulders and they all fall off.
hey...how you doin? :) this is bound to make you a hit with the boys.
On more serious point, good to hear you are getting by okay and by the sounds of things getting by extremely well! Stella efforts. I don't know you personally but have been reading in and out of the thread and find you pretty damned inspirational. keep up the good mending!

I have been trying to resist posting anything this morning but am loosing the battle against will power today.
I have been awake all night long, trying to sleep sitting up in bed. I have some pretty shocking pains going right down through my neck and back, and a piched nerve to finish off the package. I have never experienced pain like it, and am sure I will adapt to it over time. The pain strenthens with every breath I take, and the tears are flowing as I have lost full control of holding them back.
Double dose of pain killers is just making me more tired, alas not less sore.
I am exhausted. Havn't been able to sleep all week and have an overwhelming longing to lie down in bed, snuggle up, and sleep a wonderful sleep.
So.. how am I going to fix this? Simple... it's that special case of HTFU pills I'm keeping aside for special occasions. Don't know why I am posting about this, I'm sure I'll delete it later. I'm just feeling rediclously soft right about now and that's just frustrating me even more.
So... whens bed time again? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Damn! Sounds like your on the mend then. With the pain comes the healing, sad but true. Keep the chin up KP, it will only improve as you move forward. All the best!

Stress less me dear. The pain is a part of the deal and it will lessen and it will get easier with time. After all, thats one feckin big accident you had.
HOWEVER, I'm thinking that maybe too much pain aint a good thing and do NOT be ashamed of going back to the doc for some stromger pain relief. It maybe a sign something aint quite right, DON'T ignore it. I did that once and ended up in a bad place. If its REALLY bad call a bloody ambo FFS. (least you will know where you are this time)
I've got my wagon in town today if you need a lift to the docs and can blow off work for a bit but txt my mob (pm'd the number) as I dont get on KB much at work.

Hi KP,
I've been kind of waiting for that post, like Grubber said it is likely a sign things are healing but also heed Paul's advice and double check.

I cannot imagine the pain you must be feeling and the frustration at not being able to sleep, and you have probably heard this a thousand times already, but only time will fix this.....it may not have seemed like that this morning, but you are one very strong woman and you will make that happen! Things will get better.

Sorry KP - I didn't mean to be inquisitor - I was just curious about the circumstance. And dont beat yourself up about being lost - sometimes its just fun being lost - after all, you have to be lost to be found, right?
I find your attitude inspirational too- but dont think that you are now under pressure to inspire us fools.
Take your time, enjoy the here and now, and look for the silver linings - and have patience.
