Tonight coming down the Newstead straight (like an arrow straight) in the pissing rain, I was just past the Ruakura road intersection headed towards Morrinsville when I gassed it in 4th on my GPX  with near new sport zero 's front and back, the rear stepped out, steered me into the oncoming lane with the handlebars quickly tapping both sides of the tank (tankslapper?) :shit:
I kept my calm, hands and arms relaxed, let off the throttle and at the same time moved my body to match the slide, she settled down with me near the outside white line... I got back in my lane (thank fuck there was nobody coming my way or I wouldnt be here to tell the story) and idled to my place just at the end of the straight (2 mins ride)
Who would have thought that my little 250 could have done that ??? It has been going really well since I got that new cam chain fitted but it got drifting like my old 4 door turb skyline !
I learned a lesson: Wet = careful no matter straight or corner.
Had to share, needed to tell people that know. Wife doesnt get it.

If your tyres are near new that's the problem as you have to be careful for first few hundred k.

Did you check the pucker mark that is now on your bike seat when you got home. :)
One of lifes lessons that you have learned without injury. Well done.

bet your little foofoo valve was chewin a hole in your undies good and proper............ Take it easy in the wet, especially with newish tires. Wear em in at least 200-300km or get some roughage on em with a sharpening stone.
Never gun it in the wet, or in corners, not unless you like wearing out the tarmac, it tends to eat your gears and grate your bike like a cheese grater.

Notice any tar slick? That shit is pure ice. Some roads out here you can't really avoid the patches and just have to brace yourself for the inevitable fishtail.

yep, it happens. You could have hit a shiny spot in the road, offering very little traction. I've had it happen with both outcomes

Michelin in the wet FTW. All the rest = suck/dangerous/nasty/scary.

Sorry imo the tyres are somwhat new, by now they must have done 1500km and i ride a gravel driveway twice a day.
So turns out it was my inexperience plus the tar that led me down the horrible path to freckieville last night that now has me very scared of tar patchs !

Anybody interested in riding on various road surfaces may want to refer to this thread - some good advice re tar etc in different weathers and seasons. Big ups to HardcoreBiker for starting the thread in Sept 2009.

Bikes ARE dangerous ! I went for a slide in the wet today too ! fark .
On a downhill (wasnt steep) tried stopping abit faster than I should have for a driveway and ended up fishtailing into said driveway (with a lil wihip from the rear upon exit)
Jesus, I now understand why there are people who dont take the bike out in the wet, cause man any mistake I seem to make in the wet makes the situation far more complex than need be.
