From The Press Saturday May 22 page A20 Letters to the editor.

Quote.
A group of motorcyclists rode up Cranford St and onto the Main North Road. Most of them were not wearing a safety helmet, and as I followed they blatantly rode through several red lights at intersections.
In spite of several police vehicles being in the immediate vicinity, no great effort was made to stop the motorcyclists or prevent them committing further offences. And etc etc...
Unquote.

This sounds like fun :-)

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I haven't seen a group ride of the 61's in Christchurch for a long time. Are they even still present in town?

Or the Henchmen, Epitah, Road Knights etc etc, used to be reasonably commonplace to see them around

Biker funeral??What difference would that make? Are you allowed to run reds without a helmet on if someone dies on a bike?

If there's a truck coming through there'd by enough dying on bikes to justify it, I guess.....

Oh well, if they were sconned by a bus while riding through red lights and not wearing helmets, then it would've been a classic display of "Natuaral Selection". You gotta raise the gene pool somehow. (my comment relates to their contribution to society and is not racially based BTW.)

They were in town a few days ago. The cops got into a bit of a panic and setup road blocks to try and stop them. Several of them did get pulled over, and (unsurprisingly) they all have very long criminal histories. They were initially in a large group, but once they found out that the cops were onto them they split up into several smaller groups.

Ah I was referring to their headquaters that used to be off Linwood Ave, I haven't been passed there for ages but from memory they are not there any longer. I was wondering if they have a new pad in town.

I haven't heard about them owning any turf in Christchurch in recent times, but I'll find out if they're still in town and I'll let ya know.

LOL, my days of 'associating' with the likes of them and a few other 'unruly mobs' are well and truly over. So thanks but no thanks, I have no real interest other than asking out of curiosity. But it was interesting times I'll say that much.

We had the option of wearing helmets for Paul Browns funeral... had cops blocking off 2 intersections for us and the ride would have been 10k or so... MotoX bikes and racebikes too.

There is a new bunch of motorcycle enthusiasts that have called themselves the Wanderers who all live over the Eastern side of town. Decent bunch of guys but not to be crossed with.

Nelson, 1968 or 1969, I was about 15 or so.

New Years Eve in Trafalgar St. About 50 patched riders were up from Christchurch. Triumphs and Nortons with Apies. No helmets.

Lined up on Trafalgar street in the middle of town surrounded by a semicircle of pissed Nelson "Yoof" and "Yahoos" out to prove themselves.

From out of the back of the semicircle somewhere comes an empty beer bottle thrown right into the middle of them. Then another, and another and another. it was then all on for young and old.

I clearly remember that most of the riders were really, really pissed.

I watched it all with my GF from the relative safety of a doorway. I can remember all these guys rolling around on a sea of broken glass and blood punching, kicking and pulling at each other. It was horrible, but kind of interesting all the same.

Naturally, I resisted the urge to join in.

It's funny you should say that; I did some engine work for some Wellington H61's back in the day and they were always very appreciative of what I did. They showed that appreciation by getting me drunk and stoned-as whenever the mood took me. Nothing but good manners, generosity and fun times were to be had, no rip-offs in my experience and they always paid cash up front for their engine work. I even worked with a couple of them for a while and cooked brunches every day were 'on the house'. Like any group of people I suppose it depends on how your paths come together. As with most M/C's, my experience with the H61's was amicable.

Was that the great Mardi Gras fiasco? If I'm correct, the H61's haven't been back.

Yes, it was Mardi Gras. You have a good memory.

I clearly remember a patched guy face down in the gutter up by Chez Eelco but he looked very slightly built and was probably only 16 or so.

I thought to myself "Bloody hell, what's brought you to this"?

They used to rock up to gas stations en mass and fuel up then all just piss off down the road. The cops never did anything about it, what could they do? Then the police used to "escort" them when they were on a run. A car at the front and one at the back.

I kind of wanted to join with a gang but I was some middle class white boy and too young really. I liked the "Fuck you" concept and still do today, to a degree.

Hmm, can sympathise to a certain extent but I've learned over the years that keeping a low profile and running under the radar affords you much more scope.

Will PM you.

Ha yeah well unless you were invited within the gates back then the deals were well...less than glamourous  they had the reputation of the last port of call despiration measure if you were chasing some herb....2 racehorse tinnies, plus they had a rep for lacing the tinnies with horse tranqiliser. Most others were considrably better with quantity

Just trying to think of the horse trank I perloined from a drug warehouse moons ago, clear liquid, took three days off me.

Not so lucky waking up after a party miles away from where the party was with no idea or memory of how you got where you were

I didn't have many dealings with the Highways due to their being carefully watched by the cops, but spent a fair bit of time & dealings with the Devil's Henchmen as a mate lived with one of their prospects

I still say "lucky bastard". Good drugs are so hard to find these days eh? And waking up 'somewhere else' is just part of the fun. (If you wake up, that is.)
Yeah, back patches do tend to attract the attention of Johnny Law don't they? The 'easy' target and all that; I'd much rather travel incog-magneto. (A bright spark you can't see.)
