View Full Version : CBR250R won't start

I just replaced the battery on my bike, and now it cranks over nicely but it just won't start. There is a strong smell of fuel so I'm thinking that it may be flooded. I tried starting it with wide open throttle and it still won't start.
I have made sure that the kill switch is on the 'on' position. Do I have to take the spark plugs out to clean them before it will start?

Yep, I'd do that.

Might also pay to check the plug gap while you're there, my one before the last one I had (yes, I've had two of 'em now :D ) tended to blow the plug gaps open which made for hard starting.

It's going to be a cunt of a job to get to the plugs.

Getting to the spark plugs out will be a big job. Easier to just let it sit over night.

Was the bike starting before you replaced the battery?

Before I replaced the battery it would start when cold, then stall after a few seconds as usual and then it wouldn't start again. It would turn over, but very slowly. The new battery seems to have solved the problem of the engine not wanting to crank over fast enough.

Are you running it on 91 octane?

Drain carbs. Stay away from throttle on start up.

Three of them are a piece of proverbial.

There's the dreaded fourth plug though, which has been located using plans drafted in the deepest levels of hades...

Another long shot; wondering if the bike is actually starved of fuel. Any chance the fuel tank is almost empty? Try turning the fuel tap to reserve and see if it makes a difference.

Can you see the fuel filter? Not full of shit is it?

Fuel tank is about half full. I have tried turning the fuel tap to reserve, and it didn't make any difference. I can't see the fuel filter because I have to take off the windscreen, fairings, fuel tank etc to get to it. Looks like the bike will be sitting in the garage gathering dust from now on because I can't be bothered sorting it out if it's going to mean I have to strip things apart yet again.

Hi, drain the carbs to get rid of any crap in the bowls, do this via the drain screws on the carb bowls, then remove the spark plugs and check them all, if they havenot been changed for ages save yourself a lot of hassels and buy 4 new ones, they are not cheep but really the best way to make ant small capicity 4 cylinder bike start and run well is to shout them new plugs, I've done a fair bit of work on the CBrs and the whole choke system and mechanical mechanism can be a bir of a problem, while your under the tank give the choke sliders on the carbs a good shot of crc or similar and make sure the chokes pull on and slide off correctly. Check you even have sdpark, check all fuses, undo the kill switch off the handle bar and give a good spray of contact cleaner, dry and re assemble. Lay off the throttle and use a little choke on start up. good luck

has the bike been sitting for awhile sounds like the idle jets and pilot jets are blocked try removing the carbs and bowls if you need any help contact me on 027 728 4888 also these hondas have trouble starting sometimes even from short sitting time drain the carbs via the srew at the bottom of each carb and then try cranking it up again

I have a similar problem with mine, especially on really cold mornings. I use full choke, and NO throttle when starting. Sometimes takes a little bit of persuasion, but it cranks up eventually... But sometimes it'll start up no problems! Typical Honda... Lol.

New battery for winter is the best start, maybe get your carbs balanced and tuned again and new sparkies at the same time.

Hope it pans out good for ya!

I would get you to help me, but I'm poor. I don't even have enough money to fill up the petrol tank. I do however have shitloads of vodka.

Hmmmmm did you make sure you charged your new battery overnight before putting it in the bike...? When my old battery died, it wouldn't start at all even with push starting. I was told that the new battery I bought HAD to be charged for at least 8 hours to ensure it reached full capacity before I installed it...

That's going to be too much of a mission.

Sounds like it, I'll have to find that workshop manual I downloaded and I'll strip it apart and have a look. I might as well replace the fuel filter and air filter while I've got it all apart.

I cant believe its not already suggested , but here goes anyway.
Does it have spark ? ,
Is it poss you left a wire of when re-connecting the new battery ? ,

A bike that wont start after fitting a new part is normally associated to that work , i know you stated it was hard to start before the new battery but it did at least start so if anything it should do exactly the same now it has a new battery fitted.

Paul.

It only has one positive lead and one negative lead for the battery.

Hmm, another one to check is the fuel pump, they have a habit of dying, though I doubt this is your problem if you can smell fuel.

To check this, just pull the fuel hose out after the pump and turn the bike over, you should see fuel being pumped out of the line.

I can smell fuel when trying to start it, and I have already had the fuel pump replaced with one for an old Mini. I bought the pump new.

It's been working fine for about 4,000km since I've had the fuel pump replaced.

Cool. Fuel pump getting 12 volts? The relay that runs it can also die.

PM me for an address if you want me to send a CD with a PDF manual, (it'll be quicker than this damned capped interweb >_< ).

I tried to start it again today and it sounds as if it's not getting spark. I'll strip it apart next week and see what happens. Phuck knows how I'm going to get it all back together afterwards, but that's something I'll worry about in another week or 2.

I gave the battery a good 2 day long charge, and I struggled for about 10 minutes today trying to start it. I ran for about 10 seconds then stalled, and it wouldn't start again. I gave up, and an hour later I tried to start it again. It then started first pop and ran mint, just like it should.
Does anyone here know the easiest way to get to the spark plugs?

did you take it for a run after she started up? i guess if it's a spark plug issue then the run you may/may not have done wouldnt make a difference anyway?
good shit that it started though.

I didn't take it for a thrash afterwards, I just ran it in the garage for about 10 minutes, and gave it a good rev once it warmed up a bit.
