Woodyracer's VMCC round 2 report

Had a blast this weekend, thanks VMCC. Learnt many things, to make me a better rider.

SATURDAY
Qualifying

Since the Manfeild long track {4.5km} was a new track to me, i knew it would be hard to get a good spot on the grid. It was wet but with dry lines, which is my favourtie condition to race in. I rode hard around the track but still getting used to it, almost lost the front end a few times due to low track temparatures. I qualifyed 9th with a time of 2:40.146 out of 29 ss150,ss250 bikes, which i was happy with as with 29 bikes on the gird 9th is on the better end of the feild.

Race 1

There was a very welcome break in the weather, so dry track for us. Got a great start off the line, got in the front pack right away, battled with a KR150, went neck and neck down the front straight with him, and it was great to the that my bike had the top end speed of a 150. I Then started gaining on the 250r Ninja, was on his tail before the race ended. I came 2nd in prolite 250 with a best time of 2:29:000 which is only 2 seconds off the ss150 lap record.

SUNDAY
Race 2

Was horrible weather for this one, i got a bad start as i got alot of wheel spin off the line. Played catch up for the next few laps, then i went to overtake a slower ss150 bike, my front wheel lost grip coming into "spash" at about 110km/h, both me and the bike slid for about 10 metres. The bike suffered only abit of cosmetic damage althoguh saying that many others crashed in that race i got off lightly. The worst part was losing the points, but i learnt from it.

Race 3

This would have to be the best race ive ever had. Again i got a rubbish start due to wheel spin as it was still a very wet track, and then as i was playing catch up my front brake master cylinder came loose so i had no front brakes. {would of been loosened in the crash but not looked at ;[ } I passed about 3 or 4 bikes, as the master cylinder got looser i felt my brakes dissapear from me. Then as i was coming the down the front straight at 160km/h i felt no brakes!, so i clicked down 2 gears and jammed my foot the rear brake which made me drift into turn one perfectly and overtaking another bike. For the rest of the race i drifted into corners, since i couldnt scrub speed off i went faster into corners than i had ever gone. I went from last in prolite to 2nd after 2 laps. And it turns out my lap times of that race were on of the fastest in the 29 bike feild. I got a best lap time of 2:42:932 compared to the Ninja's of 2:44.401, so i was seriously gaining on him once i had got the hang of using only the rear brake.

Im very happy with the meeting, as ive learnt a new style of riding which has made me ALOT faster, although my front brakes will still be much needed. Next meeting im confident i can finaly beat the Ninja and gain some good championship points. -MAX

ahhahaa thanks, i think it was because i normanly use the brakes when i didnt need to, so now brakes wil not be used soo much.
Plus i fell like a have more control now.

It wouldn't surprise me if avalon or someone has been much faster in later seasons but there is still plenty of room for you to keep up the improvements.

Right Max, my mistake. Your points for your single race are more important than the lives and sadety of yourself and everyone around you.

I have been there and done it you disrespectfull little shit, rather than "bitching" as you so well put.

I also towed a trailer with two bikes 400kays, spent two full days working on four other bikes to ensure THEY AND EVERYONE AROUND THEM WAS SAFE while they were on track.

If you truly continued to race with "no fornt brakes at all" on Sunday, then I suggest you come and see me next round because I've got a few choice words for you as do a good number of riders who were sharing the track with your irresponsible arse. You think your hero Craig would continue to race without front brakes?

You take out one of the riders in my pit and it'll be me personally taking it two steps further as I've nothing to lose.

from what ive seen max you are a good rider. but riding with out brakes will easliy turn nasty, imagine what would have gone down if you had of crashed and taken someone with you. as i said before nothing personal but you should have done the safe thing and taken a dnf

thats a fair comment jeff, i would of taken responsibility if i had taken someone else out. But to be fair when your out on the track your decision making is different, i was guttered about a dnf in race 2 so i was on a mission to get points in that race.Although it was dangerous i kept my disance from other riders as much as i could and to my luck it worked out perfectly. It probualy wasnt the best thing to do, but i will prevent it happening in the future by preparing my bike better, all i can say is im learning. -Max

And I know that sometimes you may get confused about what the organizers of the meeting might tell you etc. But I saw your wee biff in 'Splash', and I can assure you, if I was race steward, I would've kicked your sorry ass out of the meeting due to the fact that you wandered off the track leaving your bike in a very dangerous spot. I understand that sometimes they're better off left to the officials, but your bike was on the outside of the track, and could've been moved without you having to walk across the racing line to remove it. Mind you...looks like you were unable to upright your bike on your own.

Secondly. You're full of shit. Backing it in? 'Drifting into turn one and overtaking another bike'? If your front brakes ever fail again for whatever reason...get your fucking bike off the track.

There shouldn't be any 'to be fair business' you should accept that you made the wrong decision, I can understand that sometimes in the heat of the moment you don't make the right choice but that doesn't mean it is ok or it is an excuse

Woody firstly I want to say good on ya for gettin out there and doing it's a real learning curve and one many have taken before you and made the same mistakes and different ones but this is how we all learn to better ourselves in the sport to achieve what we what. I would hate to think you would stop posting your race reports up as we all like to follow each other lows and highs in the sport.

I have to say self preservation and that of others is also paramount in this sport and taking a win over a life is not the victory of the black and white flag...sometimes we all have to give up and suck it in and take to the next meeting with another angle on things. Hell I saw a F2 rider pull into pits cos he couldn't see out there in the conditions ...that's sucking it in, hard as it was for him to do this he did it out of his self presveration and that of others on the track...

The call you make to throw it in will also be respected...the call you didn't make and could of will only end the wrong way..

Point 1: Sponsors wont be happy with this sort of public attitude and display you are making here Max, you are not helping your cause what so ever!

Point 2: You cannot and never will be able to guarantee that you will not hurt anyone on the track, you may try your best but as recent experience tells me it is far easier than you think to make a mistake and take another rider out, let alone increasing those risks by racing a bike with no front brakes.

It's ok to make the wrong choice, we all make wrong choices, it's the way you deal with them after and admit fault and learn from them which gives people credential. Swearing at people on forums (that you don't know who they are) will never help you and can do nothing but hinder your future possibilities. Road racing is a very small group in NZ and word travels very fast so think before speaking.

Max again another good race report, if we didn't have people like you giving race reports here the "Race report thread" would be a waste of time so good on you, and continue to keep doing them, there always will be negatives and positives that come out of these.

Secondly,
Just keep your cool with some of the things that have been said, some of the people that have replied on here are very experienced racers and have a valid point to make, so learn off that.

Thirdly.
I was in the same shed with you all weekend and gave you heaps of encouragement and advice regarding the large circuit and by the end of the weekend you were enjoying the track even though the conditions weren't the best, you did a great job out there and should be proud of yourself. Even beating this Old bugger.

Lastly.
Re the issuie of no brakes, I raced with you all weekend l think you will make a great racer, you are smooth out there even in the wet, we both made several passes on each other over that last race, it was going to be a close finish between us, l was not aware you had, as you say (no front brakes) you must have had some, because no way could you have done that last lap with none, on a damp and wet track, l have been racing for seven years and had lots of races in the wet and done reasonably well in those conditions, no way could l have got around there using my rear brake. What l saw in the garage after the race was your front brake mounting bracket had come very loose and that the brake lever could still be used, am l right?.
In saying all that l would have been very pissed off if you had of taken me out at any stage if what you say is true.
Myself as a Racer always er's on saftey when making a pass etc in respect of others and if my front brake had disappered l most certainly would have given up the race.
Your still young and i hope you have learned some very good points about all this, we all make mistakes in life, "if we never make mistakes we learn nothing".

So please people no more "shit slinging" he has had enough, l like KB but i don't like attitudes.

Go well this weekend Woody. You're a cool little guy doing your best, Don't forget to respect the people willing to help, and try to ignore the immature knockers.Sadly this sport is full of them so get used to it. Yep, it wasn't a good idea to continue with a faulty brake, but history has it you're not the only one in recent times. A few years ago there were a couple of classic incidents from riders much more senior than you! Ken Jones felll off Maarty van Booma's Yamaha in a championship race and broke the brake lever off. He continued on with just the rear brake, but it soon failed as it was an aluminium "look good but doesn't work" type. He finally pulled in! And about that time a 250GP bike fell over, breaking the brake levers at both ends. He carried on to finish with no brakes at all! It looked quite funny to see it backing off just past the start finish line!
