The fine currently for not displaying a current vehicle licence (rego) is $200 from memory, but is the fine the same for having a vehicle licence which is on hold and using the vehicle?

So does this mean that the current $200 fine is just what the police/courts have decided is good enough at the moment but that the legislation means they COULD increase this right up to a thousand bucks with no warning?

It's the difference between an Infringement Offence Fee $200 (for an individual) and a maximum fine on Summary Conviction of $1000 (for an individual). Payment of the infringement fee is an admission of guilt and a complete defense to proceedings toward a Summary Conviction. As I understand it.

Correct.

All offences used to be via TON, and that avenue still exists. However, IONs were introduced to take the workload away from the courts, and give people a way to plead guilty without going to court.

The TON, if issued, carries a maximum fine of $1000, at the discretion of the presiding Justice of the Peace. The ION carries a fine of $200, with nil demerits.
