Bike automatically feathering clutch?

just picked up my new (old) GT650R, during the 700km ride from from Welly back to Aucks, I noticed one main thing in particular:
If I open up the throttle significantly, the revs will jump up to and bounce off red line while still accelerating linearly. Giving a similar sort of feeling as half clutching to get the revs up, then letting it out slowly.
I'm guessing it's there to stop the rear wheel from just wheel spinning and the rider losing control, but it also means you don't get a burst of acceleration when you open it up.
Is this common? Is it easily disposed of? >.>

The clutch is slipping. I bet it's got the wrong oil in it. Get it an engine flush and oil change right away.

Don't panic, as the clutch plates are cheap and its an easy job to change them.

edit: it might just be lever adjustment. Try releasing some adjustment from the clutch lever.

I did notice the clutch releases really late into the lever play, like 90% of nothing, then the last 10% is where it actually releases.

For reference wanpo, that's about 5-10mm at the ball end of the lever, ideally about 1-2mm at the perch end...

I've dropped it off at Cycletreads, asked them to give it a thorough looking over, and list what's funky with it. I'll look down the list and see what I can do myself/what needs to be done by them and what I can afford.
The chain sounds a little funky, and if the clutch is slipping and it's not the play in the lever, I'll get them to sort those out.
I'm not mechanically blonde, just don't have a lot of experience with bikes/a lot of time to have a play.

the clutch is slipping.
three possibilities:
1- the cable is too tight. loosen it as DB and Devil said. this is the most probable case.
2- the ferodo is fucked. you have to change the clutch discs. not so painful as it seems...
3- the clutch springs are gone. you should hear bad noises from the clutch cover, and you might stop using that asap.

took the bike into Cycletreads, turns out the actual clutch assembly is screwed, it's been glued or something, and overadjusted at the bottom, will get this sorted out tomorrow
