View Full Version : Suzuki Burgman 250 or Piaggio X7 250?
HI there
Am looking to get a 250 scooter and would welcome any thoughts on the 2 above - or indeed any others - in terms of handling/reliability/comfort for longer trips etc
Many thanks!

Hi mwd. Well tell us more. Are you looking at new or second hand? Have you ridden them yet? You need to ride them both. We have a SYM voyager 250 scoot and have had it for about two years. We went for the Sym because of cost and its a great machine. You also mentioned longer trips. So what do you have in mind? Both the Burgman and Piaggio are good bikes so it comes down to personal choice.

I think its easy to get permission to go outside the 250cc limit for scoots if that is part of your decision.
I know of two that went into 400cc burgers while on restricted class 6 and one of them has rolled over 75,000 happy k's since then.

HI - and how do you go about getting permission to go outside the 250cc limit - presumably they would only consider it once you were on restricted licence - ie not on a learner licence?
Cheers

I'm not to good with the ins and outs of this site but do a search for licence exemptions there is a thread here with a "How To". As far as I know you write a letter to nzta explaining your situation, what you want to ride, why you have to have the exemption, the hardship you suffer etc. And every time you progress a stage through the class 6 you have to re-apply so its probably easier to get your restricted.
If they would introduce the power weight ratio rather than engine size licence restrictions it would make life so much cheaper and easier.

My Vespa GT200 is up for sale on TradeMe: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=299820145 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=299820145) .
I used to commute from Auckland to Rotorua every week (up on a Friday and down on Sunday) on it sitting on 110-120km with no worries. It would max out at about 140km but that is still enough to get a ticket (he says from experience).
If your interested drop us a PM and we can chat about it. :-)

Vespa px200 is the best scooter mate-great for long trips too
Plastic autos will be faster but a vespa px 200 will put a smile on your face and you will ever only need to buy 1 - it will last forever. Why buy an automatic plastic gay looking piece of shit when you can buy a true style classic?
Hope this helps,
Peter

Yeah, I'd agree with this - get restricted and then get an exemption and get a 400.
Mine managed Onehunga to Christchurch in a (long) day, Winchester to New Plymouth, Auckland to Wellington, Wellington to Auckland, a bunch of group rides, etc. I can get as little as 23km/l or as much as 31km/l depending on how I ride and city/open road use. Genuine oil filters cost $8.50 and I only generally have to spend money on petrol, tyres, oil, filters and stuff all else. Coming up to 40,000kms and the only other thing I needed was a drive belt, a spark plug and some brake pads for the rear, I'm still on the original front pads. I should really get another new spark plug, but when I replaced the first one at the proscribed interval (18,000kms) it didn't look like it needed replacing.
With a pillion and on longer rides the 400 would be noticeably better than the 250.

Ive got the x9 piaggio and he is great to ride. Zips along nicely at 140 kph ( er, who said that?)
Seriously tho, if you are looking to go 2 up I'd be going way bigger than 250. The smaller the motor the quicker it will wear under load.

The 400 is vastly superior to the 250 in every way. The 250s, relatively, are revvy thirsty buckets, that aren't half as comfy.

Check out the Kymco Downtown 300i, its just been voted 'Scooter of the year 2010' by motorcycle.com who said 'The Kymco Downtown 300i excels in so many categories with its engaging aesthetics and masterfully balanced handling, there is little room for improvement' Ive ridden one and have to say I was VERY impressed.
