I've been working as a kitchenhand in the same job for more than 5 years. I am so over working in a kitchen. I'm miserable and its time for a change!!!!!!!!!

I want to ride my bike!!!!. Its the only thing that makes me happy!!! I want to ride my bike for a job. I realise that courier rider jobs are few and far between these days, and becoming less and less of an option, as mail becomes electronic and many more parcels can be delivered by cars and vans.

there must be SOMETHING!! that I can do for a job that allows me to ride my bike all day.

Come on folks!! I want to pick your brains !! got any ideas? please share them and lets put our heads together. Perhaps you are in the same situation as me, maybe we can get together and make this happen.

Making your hobby your job isn't always all its cracked up to be.

It's like eating lollies - one or two are great. A whole packet makes you sick

I think first get out of that kitchen. Gain some perspective and once life has taken on a rosier hue consider your options.

i used to run a motorcycle courier firm.

after a few years,all of us bike "enthusiasts"hated bikes,hated cold mornings,hated traffic cops,hated woman drivers,etc.

Yup,there was a lot to hate.

Its the same as being married...........,dont ruin the thing you love by working with it.

LOL - way back when, when I delivered pizzas, we had a guy apply to do it on a motorbike.

On his FIRST delivery, he binned it and was off on ACC. Never came back cos he'd munted his bike too.

But did the pizza get through? or did they have to scrape that off the road too?

Get out of the kitchen. Being a kitchen hand sucks, I've been there.

So does delivering pizzas, I've been there too. The novelty of hooning around town in a GT Cortina wears off after a while.

But the main thing is that the reason you love riding your bike is because that's what you do when you're not at work. If you ride a bike at work, what will you be looking forward to doing on your time off?

Forget the bike for now. If you get your job sorted you’ll be able to ride whatever you want whenever you want. I did three years as a KP after leaving school, travelled the world washing pots and it was great fun. But look a few years ahead. Best to make a choice now, either get a qualification, and be poor for a few years, or get a trade. When I look back I am glad I spent all that time in kitchens, but if I hadn’t made the big decision I would probably be in a dead end job somewhere and not be able to swap bikes every 12 months and have overseas holidays every year etc etc.

I never thought I would get accepted by the Poly when I applied, I only did it to shut my old man up, but in the end I got in, passed, did some shit jobs for a few years and then everything turned for the better.

Unless you want to be a chef I ‘d say get out of the kitchen. And as everyone else said, if you ride for a living you’ll get sick of it very quickly.

You should have come to Auntie KB for advice when you chose the course, you would have been told that straight away.

Seriously though, no matter what people say there are a shed load of jobs out there to help you get out of the kitchen if you really want to. They may not seem like they have prospects, but I'd imagine they have more possibilities than your current job.

and didn't you have so much fun. The new roads, the sights, the people, absolutely, awesomelly wonderful. !

But alas, bikes. and us, don't run on fresh air. And really without the drugdery of daily life riding the bike would not give us the thrill is does.

It's the anticipation, the planning, the gazing at wonder at one's bike. The thrill of having a spare hour and being able to throw your leg over and just go. Those spontanious moments when you just bolt out the door and do it.

For those that commute every day to and from work, that in itself would be monotonous after sometime and that would be when they belt it out on weekend blat. Those mad moments of pure pleasure.

I miss riding.

This is from a company that I've worked at for over four years, that prides itself on its social conscience, assistance programmes, wonderful company culture, blah blah blah. Thats your problem 5 years plus as a kitchen hand.......in the whole time I have been in the industry I have never known anyone to make a kitchenhand position a career:shit:

Have you never had the option of up skilling??or has upskilling never interested you??

I could say I hate my job and I am sure alot of people on here could too,

I dont mix work and hobbies but I look at how the benefits of my job can maximise the interest in my hobbies and I think I have it pretty sorted now and have been in the same job for the last 9 years...yes there are pro's and con's just like any job

The only bad thing I can say about my job is that I am required too work away from home for two weeks at a time.....

But the great things are

I work less than 6 mths a year,
I get paid all year round,
I meet great people,
I work with great people,
I get 4 weeks annual leave,
I get free travel outside public holidays,
The scenery is always diferent,

And when I am at home..I can have as much time with my bikes as I wish and I get quality time with the missus:yes:

I was a chef for nearly 30 years, decades of getting my head kicked in. Now I'm self employed, I work six days a week at my business & my spare time is filled trying to make money for food etc. The business barely covers the bills at this time of year & certainly doe's not pay me. I get out on the bike for an hour or two now & again, it feels bloody fantastic, the best form of escapism their is for me.
I did a stint as a courier in the UK & trust me, you will find a new hobby very quickly. the bike will just be a means to an end.
You obviously have stamina, being an underwater ceramics technician for 5 years takes a certain amount of fortitude, apply that to a career which is going to give you a realistic life balance & a bit of fulfillment. Think about what your good at, not what you love.
I must admit I do have a hankering to be a first response medic. That must be an interesting job...

$10 billion in trade with China, we import $6 billion... are we such a profitable country that we can afford to take a $4 BILLION hit, just lose $4,000,000,000 and not notice it anywhere in the economy? cutting services, upping GST, oh yeah we get a rebate in the form of an income tax cut... but it's ok, we'll earn that back in tax credits that WE pay for WTF! I don't care if we get cheap stuff, that always comes at a price, i'd rather the people were getting their health covered thank you very much.

Sorry for the rant

$4 bill is a lot to pay for it though. you'd need a few new taxes to cover the shortfall... and they want to double it (and potentially offset it somehow, ets? that's one polluted country they've got there...)

It was the same when Labour was in gubmint - Helen Clark crowed about increased trade with China. I couldn't see how them increasing by a small amount the stuff they bought from us, while increasing by a LARGE amount how much they shipped here was a Good Thing. The nett result is an even larger imbalance between money going out /coming in, so we're even WORSE off. Sounds like our politicians have problems with basic maths....

That is f'n disgusting. Like you work with these people every day and they just dont' give a flying fuk. In the old days when I worked full-time (pre-children) if any one was ever off sick I (most times) would ring and ask if they needed milk. bread etc and if they were away longer than a week i'd take over a cooked meal of something like that to help out. Why are people so god damn inconsiderate and rude???? Society just stopped caring...got too big for itself!

Ok so I have been applying for pizza delivery jobs through Pizza hutt and their policy is that they don't let their people deliver on motorcycles because of safety reasons. Apparently, by loading pizza's onto the back of the bike it could cause you to loose balance and fall off. Never mind that I can easily take a pillion passnger with no trouble at all, weighing probably more than a hundred times the weight of 10 pizzas.
