Any of you riders out there ride to work everyday in the frezzing cold...any still enjoy riding.

I find my self disliking bikes while I sit there like a ice cube. Its so cold and not nice....even though I have warm riding gear I still feel the cold.

I HATE THE COLD....summer is a whole different story :)

Don't notice it on the Whale. Warm air from radiator keeps me warm (in summer it's a pain - too hot.)

I actually don't mind the cold too much. It makes wearing gear more comfortable temperature wise.

I was actually thinking about it the other week and I think m/c and scooter riders tend to be safer in the winter due to being "forced" to dress more appropiately were as in summer the number of shorts and t-shirt rides is much higher.

I HATE THE COLD....summer is a whole different story :)You remind me of Grumpy Smurf mate! :oi-grr: <--he's blue too!

The only times I dislike "the cold" is when I don't wear the appropriate clothing, otherwise it's not a problem. Wearing thermals underneath your gear, as has been suggested, is a brilliant idea to keep all you summer-addicts happy!

You have remembered to put the liners back in your pants and jacket haven't you?

Cold in Gisborne? Cripes mate don't let the SI boys here you complaining.

Get some good cold weather gloves and gear. I commute all year round and it makes all the difference if you've got decent gear.

Just watch out for the ice on those frosty mornings.

Only problem I found was my fingers would freeze on frosty mornings at 100km/h. I noted that my toes were fine, just my fingers froze. Not even two layers of thermnals under a larger pair of gloves helped.

I managed to solve it by wearing polar fleece mittens under simple waterproof shell mittens - my fingers kept each other warm as my toes did.

OK, I get a cold blast of air up under the visor that's usually open a crack to stop fogging but it's nothing to worry about - not even on the frosty mornings at 100km/h.

Winter time I wear thermals under my clothes anyway, and on the bike I usually wear a balaclava or ski mask under the helmet.

Summer can be worse - I can add layers in winter to warm up, but I can't very well remove too many layers in summer. OK and fine when you're moving at a decent pace but being stuck in traffic in the hot sun - Ugh, I'll take a cold winter morning over that any day.

Well I have learnt a few things, buy thermals, don't be a "girlie man" and never talk to south islanders about the cold winters of Gisborne. I find the cold thighs and cold wind coming in the visor the most annoying part of riding in the cold mornings.

Well I will harden up and buy some thermals and BE A MAN. :Punk: :ride: :cold:

Good to hear some thoughts about it though :)

Cheers guys

Why are you cold?
I never wear more than a jacket and pants with a T-shirt and I've ridden through the desert rd in winter,snug and warm.
Let me guess...you wear leather,right? :weird:

We're talking about cold and there's only been one other post from the South Island?!
How 'cold' is 'cold' you North Island dudes? Radio a few minutes ago said the air temp in Christchurch has just dropped to zero. I'l be fine in my boots, woolly socks, cords over work pants and sleeveless jacket thing under my normal jacket.
The only winter thing that bothers me (apart from ice) is chilled fog. Gotta ride with the visor up and by the time I get to work it feels like someone has driven a bloody great nail through my forehead.

Yep, know that feeling. -6 air temp, frost on the ground and fog in the air. Fog freezing on visor, gloves, chest etc. Open visor to see and wind up with the "ice-cream headache" from Hell.

It gets down below zero on frosty mornings here - bit of a bastard if commuting on the open road because -6 degree air blasting over you at 100km/h (+/- depending on wind direction) gives a fantastic wind-chill factor.

I generally find thermal underclothes, two thin pairs of socks (rather than one thick pair) sleeveless vest, balaclava and mittens (to keep my fingers cozzied together and warm) suffice to ensure I leave the house warm and arrive at work warm (except for my face which is cold despite the balaclava) - suit up indoors, disrobe indoors.

Much better than travelling in a freezing cold cage waiting for the air to warm up and trying to peer through the rapidly-reforming ice on the windshield, having to wind the window down to see along the intersection and torn between dressing so warmly you can't fasten the seat belt (or even get into the car) or being able to operate the vehicle but freezing your nuts off.

Nah, if the cost of being dressed warmly in the winter is nothing more than a cold face, then I'll take the bike over a pus-bucket cage any day.

Rain makes biking all the more worthwhile - nothing quite beats the satisfaction, and feeling of superiority, of walking sedately from wherever you parked your bike to the building, rain pouring harmlessly over your helmet and wet weather gear to the ground, while all around you cagers are sprinting through the downpour, trying to dodge raindrops, splashing water up their legs as they plunge through the puddles in a hectic dash for shelter.

Later they stand, squelching and steaming by the radiator and attempt to sound superior as they tell you "it's too wet for riding motorcycles" - Aesop said it centuries ago: "Misery craves company" - and those cagers want you to be as miserable as them - they can't bear standing there with water pooling around their genitals whilst you're all warm and dry. Of course they want you to drive a cage...

My judge of 'cold' is when my nose runs and the snot freezes on my moustache, THEN I know it's cold. :cold:

Never seem to get much of an 'ice-cream headache', maybe my sinus is well protected?

Reminder to self: Time to wear a full-faced helmet sonny.

I reckon it's all relative. I rode almost every day when I lived in Chch, and don't particularly remember it being cold. :spudwhat: Had to wear thermals under my gear anyway, as my desk was next to the conservatory on our building, and it faced southwest = hot in summer, cold in winter.

In D'Auckland, I don't even wear a jersey under my jacket - it's warm enough with just the liner in, for communtering.

Here's a thought, kneescraper - get some heated grips (assuming you don't already have them). They make a HUGE difference to how warm you feel.:yes:

I've used them only once so far - just waiting for another cold snap so I can enjoy them some more.

in HELL it is 5 degrees and raining horizontally and there is nothing you can do to keep warm.

in anywhere apart from hell (including riding through a blizzard on the desert road) these will keep you toasty :-)
* Heated handlebars
* Polypropaline
* Water & Windproof riding gear
* optional heated jacket

For the ultimate, try Baehr heated gloves. They're like sliding your hands into a very warm thing. Mmmmmmmm toasty!

Heated gloves, heated vest, heated socks, one of them snow-mobile helmets with built-in heater - then all you need is a motorbike trailer carrying a small diesel generator (or ride a Goldwing but you'd probably have to turn off the stereo, television, beer fridge (who needs that in winter anyway) and satelite link. :devil2:)

Or you could harden up. So I've had tears of agony freeze on my face because thirty foot needles of pain have been shooting up my fingers since about 3km out of Cambridge and I'm still nowhere near Te Awamutu and the ice is a millimetre thick on the leading edges of my body and the visor with its layer of ice is open admitting fog and -6 degree air at 100km/h - I survived, didn't I.

OK, I couldn't actually operate a keyboard for half an hour afterwards, but that's merely a handy excuse to wander around the office with your hands wrapped around a mug of rapidly cooling coffee.

The worst part of winter riding is that sooner or later you've got to get out of those lovely warm jacket, pants, and gloves because Suits get intimidated by blokes slouching around the place in black boots and armour - even when the bloke is a short-arse like me.

Here comes the south islander, i live in queenstown, our ski season's opening in two weeks, i still haven't got my learners license yet, and the roads are soon going to freeze over and i won't be able to ride my precious FXR150! I got my basic handling thing on sunday, and still haven't ridden it on the road :( probably go away for the winter soon :( and then i'll have to wait till summer arrgghh!!!! pity me! Was -1 today, and it's not even winter yet. Hmm, good luck to all the queenstown winter riders out there.
