I think Kaumatua (sp?) need to be stepping up to provide guidance to young Maori. Given the fact that Maori are over represented in ANY negative social statistic you care to name, something new has to be tried. If Maori want to be treated equally they need to stop acting like stone age savages, take the opportunities that everybody else has eg education and get on with it. Actually upon reflection it could well be the systems fault. These people have been so babysat by the system that they have lost the ability to think for themselves, and then when they do think for themselve e.g. bashing a child, the system was not there to tell them what they are doing is bad.
