View Full Version : Why do burnouts?

I didn't know where to post this question, but I am curious, dumb question maybe but
I don't see cruiser riders doing this and after seeing some burnout vids on our vids section...what is the purpose of a burnout, other than making alot of smelly burnt rubber smoke and a skid mark on the road? Is there some functionality to it in terms of tires sticking to the road more or something?

Have to admit i have no idea what the big buzz is either. don't particularly like spending money on tires as it is without burning them off in 2 minutes.

It removes flat spots from rear wheel lockups?

The only time some people can have somewhat controlled loss of traction on their bikes?

Good way to rark it before having a worn tyre replaced

I think it is as simple as you surmise - fun. I believe in actual drags they do it to get tyres warm and sticky and get some rubber on to track to make it sticky - but I suspect the drama of it is also a factor - got to please spectators.

I have too much mechanical sympathy to enjoy it - the revs and noise sounds like engine explode to me.

Erm...ya...that's exactly "why" I asked! To understand!!!

To the rest of you...THANK you for the explanations, I thought it has to do with speed or traction....but now I see its just for the same reason we do donuts on the parking lots here when we get a shit load of snow....just for fun!

Cruisers aren't really suited to burn outs, too much weight on the rear end.

Burn outs are fun though. Lots of smoke and noise .... :Punk:

Burnouts were invented for the rush factor. I love watching burnouts, love the smell...something about a burnout just gets me excited. Car, bike who cares...it's a fun factor thing. I remember a day my son in his RX7 and his mate in another parked up in our drive and both got the burnout on...was awesome. House stunk for a few days, fire brigade arrived and the rubber is still on the drive...I get a grin every time I walk down the drive and remember that day.

Burnouts cause the rubber to expand thereby contracting any punctures allowing you to get to the tyre shop

You are a hoon  What an example to the younger generation.

The "example" to the younger generation was the burn-out was done on private property not on a public road. Burnout was in (as much as possible) a controlled environment with safety of all those in the vicinity taken into consideration.

Spectators were not placed in any danger...we all stood on the varandah. Not liike the recent incident in the United States where a truck plowed into the spectators...their safety was in no way thought of.

Apparantley our 2010 Hiace diesel work van does amazing line lock burnouts. Right into 4th gear I've heard.

On the bike, it's a balance of front brake, twist of throttle, clutch out. Weight over the bars. Watch the front doesn't lift, or you're moving forward. Quickly.

Good to know. The tire manufacturers must love you all very much, I guess if your tires are on their last leg so to speak, its a good way to give them a happy death.

Why do people masturbate? It feels good.

And ironically masturbating and burnouts parallel each other:

A bit of lubrication at the start helps.

Use your right hand.

If you do either in public don't get caught.

And they both tend to leave a sticky residue at the end.

Now I cannot confirm it, but I imagine combining the two would be very satisfying.

Human behavior.........................

If you tell someone they can't, shouldn't or Don't DO It, then they WILL, why, BECAUSE THEY CAN.

Humans like the adventure of going where no man has gone before, they like the virgin territory and the thrills they offer. Boys will be boys, however I have seen some mean Gals do burnouts and some beastly:sunny: bike trips that dwarf my ability.

a small burnout warms up the tyres, giving you more traction as the rubber is more malleable? (soft), so more rubber touches the ground. i think that is why they always do a burnout before a drag race.
also, if you got brand new rubber, you can quickly scrub off the lam.

I did it a few times in the Hyo as the factory tires "Shinko" appear to be made out of the most solid, unwearable substance known to mankind. After waiting thousands and thousands of K's for them to show some wear I got sick of it and, with the aid of a few beverages and loud cheers, set about wearing the rear tire out. I was properly impressed with the instant smoke the tire provided and even more impressed with the Hyo actually being capable of a good skid.
Unfortunately I never worked out a good way to wear out the front, so its probably on a tire rack advertised as new, even though it had done 15000 ks.

The next day I took her to the shop and got some nice Pirellis :woohoo:

vans tend to to do sweet skids, especially turbo diesels. not much weight over the back plus load sensitive brake proportioning helps.

we had an old high top hiace with two tyres on each side of the rear back at one of my old jobs, did great heel-toe standstills at the lights etc. used to get some pretty funny looks! boss never questioned why we had to replace the tyres on one side three or four times without the other side needing to be touched, hah.

I have an 2005 the last of the older shaped models. I tell you if you so feel like it, so I hear, that if you kick the clutch while taking a corner in 2nd, she'll light up the rear for a few seconds of smile inducing bliss. So I hear anyways...

Yeah I don't really get into burnouts either. :wait:

I fucken hate listening to it down the road and seeing black lines all over the road too. It makes a nice area look like shit.

I know i'm probably one of the very few with this opinion, iv'e done plenty before when I thought I was cool doing it as a teenager and to be honest that's the only reason why, because my mates thought it was cool. I've been to a burnout comp and was bored as hell, the only cool bit was the sound of the big V8s and looking at them, then the smoke made them invisible, so it was actually really gay until they stopped! As for the Jappas going vrrrroooop pish vroooop pish vrooop pishhhhh........what a yawn-a-thon. How anyone thinks that sounds better than the heart shaking V8 rumble is beyond me.

I know i'm a weirdo.

I watched a few bikes burn out their tyres at the CK this year [I stood upwind!] and after about 20 jappas had gone up, some guy decided to do one on his harley. Well he needed about 5 extra guys to help him wobble his bike up there and he really needed lessons on mastering the clutch and throttle, but when he had finished, eventually, some bozo yelled out, "Yeah bro, fuck those jappas!" I couldn't help myself and yelled out "Spot the brain cell!" Jo punched me in the ribs while other people sniggered!

Easy peasey.....

McDonald trays under the drive wheels, and drop the clutch while giving 1st lots of revs.
By the time the tyres hit road they are already spinning.
Even a tata nano could do a burnout this way.

Autech
30th December 2010, 21:48
Or you could try the "Reverse back then bang it into drive (or first) approach.

Maccas trays are good fun, in my younger days I worked there while studying, we'd all grab a few after work and head to the nearest industrial street in our front wheel drive Jappas. Drive the rear wheels on to the tray and engage the hand brake, then go round n round n round n round :woohoo:

Good times

As for a V8 sounding better than a Jappa.
I'd agree most of the time (especially if it goes wank wank wank wank waaaaaank) but if the car in question has a straight 6 Skyline or Supra motor, bliss.

StoneY

I can honestly say I have never done a burnout in a car deliberately, not even the 4 V8's I have owned :(

More fun on a bike anyway, can make shapes, do donuts, wheelie out and hope the tyre aint about to pop..... LOL

I generally save em for tyre change day and smoke out the workshop at TSS anyway

its about the power, the noise, the smoke, the smell! (insert tim the tool man grunts).

Either get a shitter to thrash, or wait till the tyres are outa life, cheaper that way  but just as awesome :woohoo:

another cheap option is get a 2T dirtbike with a good knobly then go do skids in the mud, you still get the noise and smell (nothing like a nice 2T fume aroma), no smoke but the mud flying fucking everywhere is a pretty reasonable substitute :scooter:
