The most embarrassing accident of my whole biking days today (15yrs) and I feel like a complete knob!! Pulled up at a set of lights about 1k from home and fell off my bike while it was stood completely still!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As i stopped my draggin jeans caught somewhere / somehow in the area of the right foot peg. Had already leant slightly that way to put my foot down and arrrgghhh, fuck i'm stuck. In the milli second thereafter just managed to jump off as the bike crashed to the ground!!
The sight of your bike laid on its side is just the worst thing ever.

Damage:
1 x Footpeg hanger
1 x Indicator
1x Ego

Lessons:
Tuck jeans into boots or get some clips.
Its true that most accidents happen within 10k of your home, so fuck it i'm gonna move somewhere else.

Big thanks to the guy in an Hyundai SUV who was behind me and got out to help without laughing his head off. He stopped the traffic, lifted up the bike with me and waited till i'd drove off

OMG...glad no-one was there with the video camera...it would be on youtube by now. Another reason for wearing a helmet! Draggin jeans have proven to be a hindrance not a help. Best you get rid of the offending article...leather is the best.

Shameful huh? Last year I had a S50 and the first time I rode it, I went to put my feet down but my boots had locked into the tread on the pegs.
I fell over and knocked my husband off his CBR1000 too! Didn't damage my bike, only my husband's. Broke the brake lever, bent the handle bars, cracked the bit where the foot brake is attached to the bike and broke the fairing as well.

I was laying under the bike with my boots stuck, petrol was pissing all over the road and my husband was struggling to lift his CBR. I was so upset as I had caused so much damage to his bike

I never got on that bike again, it really knocked my confidence - that was my first ride on a full license and on a "big" bike.

I know, just kinda laziness for a short sunny journey!

Been there too...damnit

I broke one of my own rules (wear the gear!) and had a pair of work boots on...with lace's!
wove through traffic and went to put my foot down and the bloody lace "loop" caught on the foot peg...."twang"...foot not quite reaching the ground and down I went :oi-grr:
Damage...none to bike, bruise for me as I caught the bike in a "hug" and just absorbed the hit (and it HURT!...but saved my baby from any scratches ).
Served me right for not wearing my bike boots!

PS: Throw the draggin jeans away!, there bloody useless and won't help you if you go down.

It happens to all of us at some time...the other one is when you put the side stand out, but not out far enough and the bike topples onto you...happened to me outside the dairy on a busy saturday afternoon

I had a similar experience when I was a learner, which was back in the days when I didn't have the correct gear and was wearing running shoes. Somehow both of my shoe laces got caught on the rear brake lever and gear lever and when I stopped at a pedestrian crossing I was unable to put either foot down :shit:

Best moving to a hilly area so that your right foot stays glued to the brake pedal.

Sorry to hear about the fall. Really annoying. +1 to the SUV guy.

many moons ago riding in the forest on trailbikes following my son.
He stopped all of a sudden hallfway up a steepish Hill......
So I had to quickly stop as well, but ended up leaning slightly downhill....
Nothing to put foot down on there......
Son thought it was very funny....

Where I pull out from where my bike is parked at home I have to do an immediate left hand turn, pretty much from the moment I start to apply the gas.

Once I didn't quite warm the bike up enough. I let the clutch out, gave it some gas and leant left to make the turn as normal.
Except this time, the bike stalled. The bike was already leaned over; I managed to get my foot to the ground, but by then the bike was leaning too far over to be able to hold it up, and the bike and I went over onto the ground.

Nothing broken. Only injury was an ego bruise.

BUGGER! Jamiey.

Yeah laces are a hazard alright.

The other trap I have nearly fallen victim of, is back peddling the bike out of a flat parking spot, my foot hitting a small blob of oil and the foot skidding forward under back-peddling pressure - phew! Nearly dropped it, the adrenaline rush saved me I reckon.

I parked on gravel at a cafe carpark and when I tried to back out of the spot, my feet were peddling like mad on the loose gravel and I was getting nowhere!! Luckily someone's Grandad gave me a shove so I could be on my way...... the shame of it!

I always wondered why the tutor at the BHS said never put your foot down while the bike's still moving. Foot down @ complete stop, not when it's moving.

Bike was still moving a bit too fast, I put my foot down anyway. Sharp pain went all the way up my leg and bike was about to tip over so I had to ignore the pain and put my foot down.

Many moons ago, I had a pillion who tried to get off on the "wrong side" of the bike when stationary, a loaded up tourer. Was stopped, left foot down, side stand down, front brake held on- pillion passenger starts to get off of the right hand side of the bike :shit:. Bike starts to go over, fek only knows how I managed to stop it going all the way whilst "passing comment" to said passenger to dismount on the other side... After seemingly Herculean efforts I managed to keep the bike from going over and righted it sufficiently to get said passenger off the correct side, and "had careful words". One chastened passenger and strained bod for me later, all was kind of well, and it hasn't happened again.

Sometimes if you're willing to sacrifice your body for your bike you might have to put the foot down.

Right at the middle of the harbour bridge two lanes merged into one and everyone was pretty close to one another, no 2 sec rule that time. The dude in a taxi decided to test his brakes and given I was pretty close I did the same. My front locked up. Bike immediately leaned to the right, natural reaction to avoid a slide was to use my right foot and "kick" my self up at 70km/h. It worked, I stumbled on the bike for a bit as I was only hanging by my left leg on the seat. It was a very good experience. Don't follow to close and practice emergency braking.

i guess thats another thing that sets bikes apart from cars. a close call in a car just means you almost cost yourself a few thousand dollars. a close call on a bike means you've got a good story to have a laugh about :Punk:

last time i almost dropped my bike she stalled as i was doing a U-turn. must have looked funny, hopping along on one leg for a few metres while holding my bike off the ground and trying to bring her to a stop lol

Bullshit. And anyone that teaches that is a dork. The best place for both of your feet when at rest is the fucking ground. Front brake if you need to. Huge gust of wind suddenly blows you to the right side and you're down before you can get ya foot off the peg and down.

When it's windy yes. Otherwise I just put my left down. I don't ride a high COG 300kg+ monster so that might help as well (PS: not saying you do... just sayin').

PS: Also check your tread on your boots. A worn boot or shit stuck to them can easily make them slide and down you'll go. Always position your bike so your feet go down on the blacktop / metal and not painted lines or manhole covers.

Each to their own. But I nearly always have both feet down. And I ride all sorts of things.

Lol, it sux, and very humbling...... It was the first ride on my new 1989 XJ600 fresh from the shop. I was 16, (so its a while ago) and I rolled into the Shell in Marlborough.
Pulled stand out and proceeded to hop off....... stand folded, bike fell over on me. I was a weak scrawny lil dude then, (ish) and required assistance to get her off me and up.

I got back on and carried on my way after having a free frosty boy from the servo dude. No damage thankfully, small scratch on the fairing.

Man that bike was ugly!

lol.....:bye:

Back in the day on a Honda with both electric start and a kick start, didn't realise my kick start lever was against my right leg under my 24 inch bell bottoms.
Thought I looked really cool till I came to a stop at the end of my road. Went to extend right leg to the ground and down I went with bike on top. Much damage to ego.:shit:

Years ago I was being picked up by my mates for a ride. I went to ride out of the carport and just nudged a pole with my bar. Down went the bike at 2 Ks an hour, in front of 3 of my biker mates. Carport 1- ego 0.

Feeling so much better now I know so many have shared a similar embarrassing fate at some point. Gets funnier everytime I tell somebody!!

Just reading all the post re:putting feet down. No idea why my right foot went down first and was leaning that way, trying to think what my "normal" side is and the truth is I just don't know - sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes both etc. Riding for so long things are just knida automatic and often random. Once bitten twice shy tho with wearing draggin jeans, might start tucking them into me boots.

Thanks for sharing all the stories.

A thousand cheers for the Hyundai guy.

That's what I thought. I dropped my bike in front of AUT yesterday, people milling about everywhere because of AU's open day, and no one bothered to come over and help me pick up my bike. Aucklanders suck sometimes. I'm lucky the only damage to my bike was a bent footbrake.

I know I'd rather fall of at that speed than anything any faster given the choice.

Either foot can get caught up, not just one side.

thinking back to the 08 kb rally i seem to remember a certain "old rider" with mrs oldrider on the back showing off in front of tv cameras. :innocent: think he felt rather :o
not to mention myself very recently when practising at home for the bhs i came off (no problem) got back on but bike was not running properly so decided to go and park it. turned around and stalled on a hump on the ground and couldn't put my feet down, bent foot brake and the end off the accelerator
Neighbour came to the rescue 2nd time and "shrek" did the fixing of the bike

Strange things happen with bikes...I was at a National Park entrance station in the US one day...had been riding the bike for 10 days, thoroughly aclimatized with it.....when I pulled to a stop, I just got off, forgetting to put down the side stand. Never done it previously, never done it since....hard to explain! As tall as I am, it takes two to lift my bike.

I have had this happen when locked into push bike pedals, so i know exactly how you felt.
You got it right though , morale of the story tuck your jeans into your boots, or make sure your trouser straps around your boots are done up tight.

Tell you one thing it wont happen to you again, but it will happen to others, because people don't learn from others mistakes.

OK, I'll admit one too. 2 weeks ago parking my 6 day old Tiger in central Taka. Still not too sure what happened to be honest but I was on full right lock which meant the bike only scratched a $50 plastic hand guard, whew!! Luckily nothing was driving down the road cos I ended up sprawled all over it. Funny thing was when I killed the engine and stood up to see who could help me pick it up I was surrrounded by hundreds of 80+ pensioners!!!! I was so pissed off/angry/embarrassed I just picked it up like it was paper. Adrenaline is a good response!!

Just stopped off at a mates place on the way to the Cold Kiwi. Went to hop off the bike and caught my boot in my bag. Caught the bike before it hit the ground and pushed it back up.

Note to self.... next time let the dam thing fall......torn calf muscle is a nuisance and takes forever to heal.

First time I put gas in the Z.

Rode out of the servo, and stopped to wait my turn to enter traffic. My front wheel was just on the (very wide) road and my back wheel was on the footpath.

Put my foot down, and couldn't reach the ground - I was just over the gutter, and it was deep. Only just kept it up, and lesson learned.

(Bike's been down just once - and that was in my garge moving it around (zero km/h, engine off) while sitting on it. Lost balance and couldn't catch it. Frack. Another lesson.)

Stopped at the Dairy Flat BP on the Impulse about a year ago. Had a bit of a brain fart while parking and let the clutch out before putting it in neutral. Lost my balance as the bike lurched forward and went down with the bike. Thankfully the only damage was a cracked indicator lens and snapped an inch off the end of the clutch lever, enough left for me to continue the ride.

My first ride on the R1, after every one told me it was too big for me yadda yadda.... your gona kill yourself blah blah blah...
I was second at the intersection, only a slight camber to the road, left foot down... and im thinking... wheres the road.... slight tip.... uh oh.... and we were over.
Had the bike sitting on my thigh refusing to let her touch the ground... I knew Id never hear the end of it. Now way this girl was getting it back up tho. Thankfully between snorts of laughter my so called friends jumped of thier bikes and got us upright again....

No damage phew...
