I'm back!
Had a long holiday - nine months unemployed with the wife playing student. So 9 months with pretty much no income at all was a bit tough. Great lesson in how cheaply we can live if we have to but got too close to selling stuff for comfort.
Had some really good friends keeping an eye on us though, so we came through OK.
Both wifie and I are employed now so it's looking good. However, the new job means that I am on call and of course, I have no annual leave accrued for a while.

Anyway, I figure that it's time that I organised a ride but what I have in mind may not be for everybody and because of the above, it has to be Saturday/Sunday.
As a consequence of past escapades, I am reasonably well equipped for getting away from it all and so what I was thinking was a sand weekend up Bailey's Beach way.
The last time I was up there, DJ and I discovered this rather tidy little camping ground about half way down the beach, hidden behind the dunes which has been set up by one of the fishing clubs. There's also a nicely challenging track that runs from the camping ground along the back of the dunes and up on to the road down the peninsula.

So basically what I had in mind was a Saturday ride up there, head down the beach to Poutu with some side trips into the dunes, camp out Sat night with Sunday left open - maybe up to the other end of the beach and then home via what gravel Crisis can find.

Warning!!!! You will need to carry everything you need - i.e. a real adventure ride.

Anyone interested?

Footnote: We have this large and pretty empty house and so can offer accomodation to the odd bod wanting to come up from south of the Bombays. Could maybe even organise that Aussie photo evening that we talked about but never did. Can also get bikes into the garage.

Firstly, thanks for the kind words on the job thing. Obviously, my experience is not uncommon and so it's still tough out there.

As for the ride, it seems we may have a quorum.
I had in mind to let the equinox and the turbulence that it traditionally brings, shuffle by first. With that in mind, Clint's preference for the 13/14th of November comes into focus.
My weekends are pretty open at the moment and so it matters little to me.
Therefore, why don't you lot come back to indicate your preference for that weekend or the one following (November 20/21) and we will take it from there.
Lastly, Iain apart, is anyone else interested in the Oz photo evening because if so, I will try and get a projector from somewhere?
Remember that provision of somewhere to crash is eminently feasible.

I have been up that way and down before and it is a great bit of scenery, plenty of metal between Waitoki and the Kaipara...:)
The back roads behind shwy16 are all good...The track round the back of Kumeu to Helensville golf course etc etc...Iain knows the route....Back roads around Wellsford are awesome!
I got a projector, it belongs to work, just need to figure out how to bring it, leave it and pick it up again:) Doesn't work too well with sand in it....Well, nor does my KTM, I have proof of that from my last outing around the Kaipara coast....:msn-wink:

The ADV shots were about 1/7 of the total - my biggest problem was picking what to use. Crash space reserved; any interest from Rosie?
If she's put off by the sand, I had thought that we could head straight down the beach to the campsite, get set up and then go play with unladen bikes.

A good tide calculator here http://www.niwa.co.nz/our-services/online-services/tides

..has high tide on the 13th at 1pm and low tide at 1pm on the 20th - I'd strongly recommend the 20th unless you plan to be on the beach by 9am on the 13th.

Well done on the job front!

Thanks for that. I'll have to have a bit of a think though, cos getting out the next morning is also a consideration and low tide at 1pm gives us high tide at about 8am the following morning..............unless we don't use the beach to get out......

If I remember correctly, and I mostly don't, we stayed behind the dunes from stealth camp till we cut the track up the bluffs? Am I right, we would not need to revisit the beach in the am?

Exactly right and what I had in mind to get around the problem of a favourable afternoon tide being unfavourable the following morning.

Right, being playing around on the Niwa site and here's how it goes: -

6/11 high tide 10.05 am - 7/11 high tide 10.49 am - height 1.5 m
13/11 high tide 3.34 pm - 14/11 high tide 04.04 am - height 0.8 m
20/11 high tide 9.20 am - 21/11 high tide 09.58 am - height 1.0 m

What this amounts to is that Paturoa is right - not with the exact time of high tide as it turns out but that access on the weekend of the 13/14 is difficult. In fact high tide timing could not be worse for what I am planning on that weekend even though it will be a relatively low tide peak. Sorry guys, but that means a change of plans and the weekend of November 13/14 is out.
The weekends either side are ok however, for getting in on the Saturday and not impossible for getting out early Sunday if we need to. I am hopeful that the Sunday tide will not matter though, because as Jamie points out, the last time we were in there, we found a quite well-established track from the campground up the bluff.
Can't guarantee that it still exists, but that just adds more interest, eh?

So, to summarise, it's either Nov 6/7 or Nov 20/21.

Let me know your preferences.

Well Bugger!
I was looking forward to seeing the new steed in action.
Sadly, beach camping is not much fun in half a gale. The exfoliation is great but the eating and sleeping is no fun, which is why I pushed it out past the equinox. So unless your middle name is Canute (and even he had mixed success), then there's not much we can do.

I'm confident that there will be other chances though.

Thanks for the suggestion Chris. I thought about it. However, the reality is that the place I am planning to camp on the Saturday may not be strictly legal. I don't anticipate any problems as I think it is tolerated because it is well looked after and consequently may even be beneficial to the surroundings. At worst, we will wind up at Glinks Gulley for the night. In any case, it suits me to keep the numbers down so that we don't attract too much attention. I think 5 or 6 max would work quite well.

I doubt it (and I know your comment is tongue in cheek). We will cope however it turns out. I deliberately wanted to leave a bit of uncertainty about it. After Oz, the "take it as it comes and deal with it" aspect appeals

What I actually had in mind was to head to a campsite first, so that we can unload and then go play in the sand as light as possible. I will have my little compressor along so that we can play with tyre pressures and make the most of it.

Since we are all agreed that we are go for November 20/21, as I previously mentioned, if there is enough interest, I am happy to do an Oz trip photo evening on Friday 19th. This could of course include refreshments of various types.
Mark has even offered to haul a projector up for us. However, if there are only going to be 2 or 3 interested, it is not worth his while.
So could I have a show of hands, please?

Which leads to me asking do we have a plan for saturday yet?

Right. Good question.
I plan to be leaving Shell Westgate at 9.00 a.m. on Saturday. Crisis is plotting a few diversions which will get us to Dargaville around lunchtime. From there the plan is to locate and set-up camp, which then leaves us with unladen bikes to explore the beach, the dunes and the peninsula generally for the rest of the afternoon.

Since we are camping, the weather is of particular interest for this one. I have to say that Metvuw looks a bit indifferent at this stage - not severe enough to cancel but not ideal either. However, we all know how accurate the forecasts aren't, this far out.
If the forecast for the weekend turns to total crap, I will post a cancellation about 0600 on Friday. However, Friday night will go ahead regardless.

Sunday is a bit loose at this stage, but wil involve a circuitous route home.

No, I planned to head for the camp straight down the beach. However, I'm pretty determined to take in Pouto in the afternoon - the tide will be too high to get there via the beach on Sunday morning.
I thought that the braver amongst up might tackle the sand cliff below the lighthouse.

Both Metvuw and Metservice as quite similar for a change!

I'd still be keen to go, and make a call on the weather when we get there, and if it is looking like rain then stay at Glinks. There is a large covered kitchen / common thing at Glinks which is OK in the rain.

I'm likely to go no matter what the weather, as this is prob my last outing before Christmas (5 weeks away!).

I am inclined to agree with you, if the weather looks crap we just stay in cabins of some kind. If Glinks does not work out there is always Bayleys Beach (http://www.baylysbeach.co.nz/accommodation.htm).

Don't be fooled.....you Orklanders may see it as rain, down here where we need it, I don't expect it to be enough to even stop work!

I don't mind riding in the wet - in gravel and sand, I think it actually has its advantages. So, if you guys are starters regardless and prepared to go commercial for accomodation if the sky falls, let's do it. I'll take a last look at the forecast in the morning and post accordingly.

How did the crate work out by the way and are you joining us tomorrow evening?

In that case I'm a definite, and prepared to stay where ever. I agree with you about riding on wet roads, particularly for dust!

The crate is stored under the house atm. The oz trip didn't happen this year as I ran out of leave and money! Planning is proceeding for easter 11!

And thats a no for me tomorrow evening at this stage.

I assume we are going to be staying in cabins?

What is the story with tonight? Where/when?

I'm taking a tent so that I can make a call when we get there. I figure that i can always find space to pitch a tent but a cabin isn't guaranteed.

Tonight, my place, kick off about 6 and go till whenever. PM sent.

Me too for taking a tent. There aren't any cabins at Glinks campgound. Last time I stayed there (~2 yrs ago) there were some clapped out old caravans ...?

I'm not aware of the next nearest accomod (other than in Darg itself).

Bayleys Beach have cabins, not sure if available, but always an option.

This is starting to feel like an adventure now, a good level of uncertainty.

Great ride !

I turned up at Westgate and there were 4 serious adventure bikes, knoblies, light gear and me on my whale! I was a little worried about being an anchor but it turned out all good.

Trip up was awesome, first major gravel ride on the wee. Gaz had a flat and the 21" tube fitted nicely in the 17" rear.

Lunch was crap in Dargaville. Chris thought he had bough a pie, but he rekoned it was a road cone in disguse and declared it the worst pie he'd ever had.

For most peeps that would ruin their whole weekend but he toughed it out and still ate most if it.

We headed straight out to Baylys beach (it was low tide and rode down to Glinks and set up camp there.

Then we unloaded and headed down the beach all the way to Pouto and back up the road with a number of detours.

The lads did their best to ride up to the light house, but only gaz made it.

Dinner was quickly washed down with a few beers, port, rum and whisky mmmm.

Aparently I snore!

Trip home today was mostly wet and we split into 2 groups. Neil and I pretty much tar sealed it home with one diversion to look at Whakapirau.

Yeah that is the one. It was about 2:30ish we went through. Doing it with full luggage was not the best idea but we still made it, we then did Chatham to round off the day.

I was doing it in the opposite direction just a bit later than that, Ararimu valley, Chathams, Boathouse, Inland, Rimmers & down Muriwai beach, I saw the tyre tracks in Boathouse and I must admit to being mildly stuck a couple of times, the "use a stick to check the depth" trick isn't that reliable! I came out covered in mud. :shit:
Muriwai was awesome, stormy seas, empty beach and hard packed sand.....some one mentioned there was a speed limit?

Drifting.
He's probably just chopped the springs rather than doing a proper job of it.

Maybe he was making room for the 990....with the panniers on, there aint much room on those lil' roads...mind you, the speed Chris rides the 690, he was probably shocked into taking evasive action and the milk sloshed......:)

Hi Guys, lots of fun on the dunes, Garys DR was the onlt one to make to the top, this is him making the final run, front wheel off the ground as well, sadly us KTM boys couldnt make it all the way to the top.
Chris was proud of where he had ridden his KTM at Batley point when he realised the tide was coming in fast across the out crop of shells
Ill put up some more photos of Bass getting his DR out of the sand, not a good look.
