Has anyone here tried to grow their own tobacco, and if so, did it turn out alright?

I tried some from out of the kilns when I used to pick it, bloody disgusting, takes a bit to cut it up too....and I was given about a kilo of locally grown stuff that looked good, but that tasted like crap too.
Easy enough to grow but it's the drying and blending thats the hard bit

As long as it's cut, rubbed and flavored correctly it's great. I'll be growing some this coming year.

I didnt know if it was legit or not so wont meantion any names. You can buy the sylvia seeds and plants from switched on gardner as well as the end product even after they were busted so is it illegal will warn my mate if so

Salvia Divinorum is perfectly legal in New Zealand, although National MP Jacqui Dean did try to get it banned. Growing tobacco for personal use is fine, selling it, bartering it, or even giving it away to your mates is not.

That is correct, if you sell flowers. Tobacco products need to be sold by a licensed seller, this way the gubberment can watch your sales etc and tax you, seeing as there are the obvious large taxation's on these things here.

Salvia divinorum. It's not illegal to cultivate or possess in NZ.

Well done that man. You realise it would be a better solution to give up the evil habit... I know I will 'one day'.
Manage to shift the Rover then?

I gave up for two months, went cold turkey. Then two weeks ago I decided that was enough and had to see if I could start again....ahem.
Rover auction finishes tomorrow evening....Wish me luck. Seriously sad to have to sell a car from my childhood PG rated fantasies.

Well I've just had a wee ciggy of my home grown baccy. I've been keeping the dregs from my old Drum packets for about 4 or 5 months (prolly longer) and mixed about a half and half. Couldn't really taste the drum which was a pleasant surprise, but couldn't really taste anything much to be honest. Maybe the leaves weren't big enough, praps it's golden virgin (never asked) which I could never really taste, maybe the mix was a bit damp still (now drying in the tub on the windeecill) dunno. It smells nice though. Whilst mixing in one of these pull string dicer things (surprisingly good for the job)

(wife sells Tupperware so there's a couple in the hoose, might use the big one next time) I flavoured with tequila from a mister (might try something else next time). Then once fine, added the Drum dregs and span it up again to mix.
Outcome. Next smoko I'll try a Drum only smoke and a mixed one side by side to get a comparison... but the mix I have is surprisingly smooth. I thought it was going to be like inhaling a tree that's on fire, but not even close. Happy man, happy wife given potential $$$ savings, unhappy daughter as the place smells like baccy she says... just gotta get the beer done :D
I'll do a home grown only batch next for another comparison.
Oh and if anyone wants to grow their own I have a fuckload of seeds, and I mean a fuckload (with about 10 times more to come off of the plants) as I went a little OTT in regards to not culling the flowering. Live and learn.

At least by growing your own tobacco, you dont have to run a string line from the road fence through the maize to find the garden.:banana:

Just finished my 2nd season growing my own.
The growing is the easy part once you get past the seedling stage.
Harvesting is an on going thing an you should get 3 full picks over the season.
Drying curing chopping blending and flavouring are the more interesting parts.
The leaf wants to stay semi moist until it has lost it's green colour and turned golden brown.
How well the leaf changes colour is dependent to some degree on weather it was really ready when it was harvested,,,,,high sugar levels as shown by yellowing leaf tips.
Drying and curing should take around 3 months.
Hang loosely so leaves don't touch and check for mould daily.
You can buy choppers on line and blending is an art form due to different strains and how they all react to different growing conditions..
I have a secret recipe I give to anybody wants it for flavouring.
For the best smoke it should always be flavoured because one of the main ingredients in all tobacco flavourings alters the PH level in the smoke as it burns thus making it a far easier smoke.

it's not really fussy. you could probably sprout it over a weekend, repot, put it in the ground in 2 weeks, then, short of lawnmowing, flamethrowering or letting your donkey loose in your patch, it'll live.

Only cause you asked so nice.
Mixed with 1 pint of warm water.
2 Tablespoons Glycerin,,,,from your local home brew shop.
2 tablespoons Golden syrup.
1 tablespoons Honey.
2 tablespoons Dark rum.
Spread chopped baccy over surface about 2 inches thick then Lightly mist/spray baccy until damp to touch.
Don't get it to wet or it will become clumpy
This is the next to final step so baccy will already have been dried/cured/chopped well before you get to this stage.
Final step,,,Let it dry again before packing for storage,,,,,,,ect
