Muffler repacking?

Hi all

Riding the other day in the mighty karapoti and towards the end of the ride my bike got REAL loud and lost heaps of power.

Has a FMF fatty and DEP silencer.

Put the original silencer on and it seems to have made things quieter.
So it looks like I need to re-pack the silencer.

This sound about right? Any advice on doing this / what to use?

go to your bike shop, ask for packing, round $20

some will say use pink batts, dont take this advise, it burns too easy

you can get packing in square pieces or as stringy kind of stuff (i prefer this, harder to install, but cheaper and i get better results with it), either way wrap this around the silencer core reasonably tight and use grip wire around the whole thing to secure. not overly tight though. make sure to use exhaust sealant when re-installing the outer part - you dont want leaks.

pink batts wont burn - its glass fibres? the glasswool has a melting point of 700 degrees celcius - hopefully you aren't getting that at your silencer! there may be a small amount of resin on the glass fibres (keeps them together) but this shouldnt melt till bout 300 degrees, so again, hopefully your silence is not that temp either! i packed mine tightly with pink batts, and it seems fine

I think that the problem with pink bats is they all blow out the muffler a bit easier than proper packing does.

Also make sure you clean the carbon out of the pipe and the holes are all clear on the inner part of the muffler.

That's right. And pink batts stink! The smell is repugnant. Get sheets of packing like this

perhaps i had shit pink batts - i did it once, had smoke coming out of silencer after a ride, pulled it out to find it had all melted together

I used the one like in trade me on the shorty. It worked fine but hard to pack it in.Just pulled it apart sfter six months and not much burnt. This time I got fmf two stroke specific packing from cycle treads ($13). With all of it in still not so tight packed, may be thats how it should be. Something tells me its going to sound heaps better though..yet to try.

If it all gets too hard Cycleworks out in Wingate will repack it or sell you okish packing.

I'm losing respect for that stringy wool packing, my fav is Daytona mat stuff.

Yeah that'll work, as will any packing you grab from any bike shop. They should be able to give you a basic explanation of how to do it aswell. But thats obvious enough when ya pull it to bits
