View Full Version : 'Issues' with boyfriend and bikes

I'm a learner, which is awesome. I pootle around every weekend on boyfriend's bike (Yamaha Scorpio, cute zippy little thing), I'm not too bad (hill starts still need work), and I'm planning on getting a bike once I get my Restricted - gives me time to save up a decent amount for a deposit. I'm 25, so it won't be that long.
The problem is that all of a sudden, boyfriend doesn't want me to get a bike/licence.  He's the one who initially taught me the basics, too, so it's not as if he doesn't know that I'm okay on a bike.
Also, I'm the acknowledged Safety Queen, ATGATT and all that - and he far too often heads off, jacket flapping in the breeze and helmet unfastened (and no other gear).
Is there any way to deal with this/make it less of a contentious issue, because I really do want a bike (running costs, parking, FUN)! I love him to bits, but I'm confused by the suddenness of this, and the sheer nonsensical crazy of it (double standards much?).
Any advice, Angels?

Just tell him this is how it's going to be. No one should dictate how another lives their life IMO.

A case of careful what you wish for. He wants you to get into bikes, but on his terms, not yours. If you get your own bike he doesn't get to control how, when, where and what you do with bikes.
You might end up having to choose between bikes and boyfriend. In which case my advice is go with bikes. There's plenty of guys out there.

I can see how he feels, I don't really wan't my girlfriend to get a bike. But I don't want to stop her doing what she wants and it's fully hypocritical for me to stop her (not that I could of course). If it was me, I'd tell him that it's your decision and he can't stop you and just do what you want. I know when my girlfriend gets a bike I'm gonna love going on rides with her.

thats fine as long as he stops riding as well.
you could always stop him from riding something else
just buy a bike and tough shit he'll hopefully get over it

I would suggest that you just ignore him. He may be just realising that you are REALLY getting into this biking thing and is worrying that you will maybe hurt yourself at some stage. Some guys are real softies like that, failing that he is being a dick.
Dont make it an issue, just quietly go about doing it for yourself (get your own wheels soonest to avoid any issues there) and dont worry about what he is thinking. As far as him not wearing ATGATT, that is his call, a stupid one in my opinion but his choice. He sounds to me as if he is the big I AM, do what I let you do and I will do what I like.

He's having a bad case of "buyers remorse" so to speak, as old Mental Trousers has already alluded to.
When he first showed you about bikes, and how to ride them he was thinking "Yup, I'm the experianced one, more respect, be cool for both of us" etc etc. All of a sudden, he's relaised that "Shit. She actually enjoys this and I'm never going to get any time on my own. This is supposed to be MY hobby"

Thanks everyone for your replies - man, a lot in a short time! :)
@Taz, CAMSec, Dumpty, Spazman - Yeah. I'm gonna keep on with it, I want my bike! :)
@Scuba_Steve, rickstv - LOL, trudat! :P
@Mental Trousers, white trash - Yeah, I think he has a case of 'careful what you wish for'. Because he was quite keen initially - perhaps only now realised the ramifications? And yeah, bikes FTW, other fish in the sea.
@Mom - I think he is worried I'll hurt myself, he's a big softie sometimes. Carrying on as I am seems order of the day.
@auntfanny - *snerk* Tried that, and she left me... but that was before I tried bikes. Maybe it would help, LOL! :D

I think you should scare him more with saying you feel more butch, thinking of getting a dyke haircut, shopping for some romper stomper boots and overalls, using safety pins as accessories and other such stereotypical markers.
Then just go back to riding - if he has a problem, then its him not you! And he should have realised, bikers by nature are rebellious!

I don't think its a matter of choosing between biking and boyfriend,
its choosing between having a boyfriend who wants to control you and one that doesn't.
I couldn't be with someone who thought they had the right to tell me what I should or shouldn't be doing.
My opinion only of course.

Yep, I know what you mean, Juzz - and this is the only time he's been anything less than okay about what I do (and I get up to some crazy stuff - he knows I can look after myself). I think he's had a sudden panic, hence why I'm trying to... smooth things over? until he gets used to the idea.

hes either a control freak, or he is worried about your safety. politely remind him that its no longer 1923, and that (apparently) now women have rights and shit, and you can and ill do what you want, and if he ever wants pussy again, he will accept and support your decision.

So in sum, I suggest you buy whatever the hell you want. It's your money.

As you have worded the situation, it sounds like a little respect and tolerance is lacking on his side of the relationship...
27 years happy married life is only acheivable if there is mutual trust and respect and a good degree of tolerance.
I am MOTGMOTT...my wife is ATGATT...But if I want to enjoy MC travels with my wife, then it is in both of our interest that she feels as comfortable and and as safe as she can, which means not skimping on gear or critisizing her ATGATT approach.
Now she is relaxed on the bike, enjoys our travels which means we enjoy our travels. Which in turn means we have lots of mutual experiences which is a key to another key to lasting relations.
If a relationship begins or develops into disagrements, oneupmanship, bullishness, diffeing opinions that lead to arguments....then in my honest opinion, things do not bode well for the long term...
And as the earlier posts point out, there are no shortage of young blokes having the hots for biker chicks...

Nah, he isn't. Amusing though this would be.
I actually had a pretty long talk with him last night, and he admitted that it was because he was worried about me crashing (he's done it a couple of times himself, though nothing serious). In his words - "I didn't want you to feel like I did - and I really don't want you to get hurt." Basically, sudden realisation and overreaction.
It helped that other boyfriend was being cool about the whole thing (was a bit worried, but was sure that I'd be a good careful rider, also reassured by ATGATT).
Both certainly have the message now that I'm going to ride and have a bike. Nice form-fitting leathers may assist in their getting used to the idea. ;) Perhaps that should be first on the list of stuff, after helmet of course...
So all's well that ends well, I think.

Who's wants to waste time in a relationship with an idiot that is not worthy? I'd rather be happy and alone, than be with someone just for the sake of being with someone. Can't imagine how some just make 'do'.

I'm just repeating, but sounds like he had this vision you wouldn't take to it, respect how "hard" it is and be happy being his pillion.
Or your skills are improving and he is feeling a little insecure? ("she might be a better rider than me"?)
I introduced my partner to riding and encouraged her. she loves it and I'm glad she does. Yes - I had an alterior motive. for her to do something I also love so we have another thing we can do together (readers - you're either thinking  or  right now).
Anyway - tell him you want to be able ride with him. Wouldn't it both be great if you both had bikes and could ride together?
Mrs. B and I are going on our first combined camping expedition. Just bought her a pack for her rack (bike rack that is KBers). Just need to sort out a comfy mattress for tent nookie.

if you buy an air mattress get a 12V compressor because you wouldnt want to be so exhausted from blowing up the airbed that you had no energy left for anything else...

My ex didn't like me riding, nearly four years later bikes are still in my life...
Oh and a sexy man who I got 'friendly' with after we rode together
Any chance you could elaborate on what exactly friendly means....just , u know , umm, curious!

@Genie - Yeah, they both know about each other, they get on really well (and have been known to gang up on me at times). Just a matter of luck (finding them), and the belief that honesty and communication can make any relationship work. Check out polyamory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyamory). And hey, being fussy isn't a bad thing; I didn't have a boyfriend for a couple of years before I found one-then-two of them.
Two boyfriends is wierd....

I think it was more he had a bit of a freakout about me possibly falling off and getting badly hurt (and possibly binning his bike). The improving skills might have a bit of impact on it... ;) I certainly want to ride with him, and I'm really looking forward to it. Sooner or later, he'll get around to liking me riding too. :)
Anyhoo OP. Have you gone for your basic skills n handling test yet?
AMCC run theirs in the evening and you don't even need your own bike.
I'm booked in to do my BHS this Tuesday coming, and I'm going to study up to do the licence test the same day (assuming I get the BHS! :) )
@Reckless - Thanks, I think! :laugh: :killingme
@Argyle - Yeah, a lot of people think that... but it works for us. :)

I think it's been sorted.
Boyfriend is going to be away for the next three weeks. When he left on Monday, he gave me the keys to his bike, and said, "Here, for when you get your Learner's tomorrow, so you can practise."

I'm a cynic - the first thing I thought was is he actually afraid you might go riding without him and get ANOTHER boyfriend? Perhaps he is worried about having to share you some more....
But again - I'm a total cynic

and get really naffy when you go riding and she can't....

Its a trust and a confidence thing...she is not that confident riding a bike and....(the silly girl)....trusts Moi within limits of speed and riding style. She has no hesitation asking me to slow if she is uneasy and in true team fashion, we do slow down

Get the FKN bike !!! he will learn to live with it if not call me

not true.If this wasnt a public forum I'd tell you a weird situation I found myself in about 5 years ago. now THAT was weird
personally, I have had a few men over the years say 'we could sell your bike and buy us a ..." suffice to say we parted company fairly rapidly. There are some honeys tho, my hubby bought me 3 bikes just cos I like them:woohoo:. He couldnt ride and had no interest in riding.

interesting - the thought that some people think they have the right to control their partners ... and have partners that allow them to think that's mebbe OK by even considering it.
talk to the bloke - ask why
if the answer isn't acceptable, tell him why
either way - you both get to choose
life's too short :wari:

Do what you want - I ride and love it. If anyone told me I couldn't do it - they wouldn't be worth it. Life is what you make it. Fortunately for me, my partner taught me to ride and supported me all the way. Now I ride as good as he does. Go girl, do what your heart wants :niceone:
