I got my Learner's today, and it's been an awesome day!

Got up early, went off to Te Atatu to meet Phil of RiderSkills for a learner's course and my BHS. I was nervous at first, but Phil was very professional and I gained confidence quickly. It helped that I was the only one on the early course, so it was a one-on-one! He coached me through basic skills, through the test exercises, and then through the test itself. Passed with flying colours! :wings: I was very impressed by Phil's teaching, he explained and demonstrated excellently, I highly recommend!

I then drove into town, wrestled with the local bureaucracy (thanks AA people for being really nice and helpful!), and sat my theory test. Again, passed with flying colours! Glee! :wings: Got the little piece of paper, YAY! :woohoo::done:

I was over the moon, but by this time, was itching to have a real go on a bike.

Got going okay, and tootled forth. All was peachy until I stalled the bike at a right-turn bay, Scorpio having a slightly more touchy throttle than the docile little GN125 that I'd been riding earlier. At which point a boy racer stopped behind me. Scorpio had decided that no, she wanted to stay in second, thank you very much, first was not to her taste. Eventually got her into first, got going, nervous as fuck with boy racer revving behind me, got up to second/third/fourth, puttered along at 50 (OMG 50 is FAST!!!!!11ONE!!11). Boy racer got up my ass, revving like crazy. <_< I took my left hand off, pointed down at the L sign on the back of the bike, and continued at 50. He revved some more, and then screamed past me at a stupid rate of knots. The rest of the traffic seemed content to follow me. Turned into the petrol station, all okay, got fuel (was congratulated by the attendant), went off towards home (stalled at the exit of the petrol station).

Feeling a bit shaky, but determined, I went down to Unitec and pootled some more for another half-hour or so. Practiced clutch/throttle control, turning, stop/start, gearing up and down. Took some pictures of me and Scorpio (hey, is there an Auckland tag-o-rama?).

Went home, put bike away (wrestled with centre stand, managed on the 5th try). Went splat on the bedroom floor, and was fed chocolate by boyfriend. :) I feel incredibly accomplished, much more confident, and YAY I CAN DO THIS THING! :ride:

All-in-all, a pretty awesome first day as a motorcyclist! :woohoo: :ride:

If you ever need someone to ride with I am keen!
My husband never wants to go riding with me  or if he does, it is a very short ride.

Well Done on your first ride. Good on you for not being intimidated by a prick. Just take it easy out there and take the time to learn the basics before venturing too far afield.:niceone:

congrats on the great first ride, hope the second one is just as much fun. I have lost count of the kms done on two wheels, but I still get that buzz when I'm out in the bike

Welcome and glad to see you are enjoying it. I did my BHS there with Phil, try to do the Competent Rider course with him ASAP, it is a bit of dosh but well worth it, that is one on one. Keep enjoying the Scorpio, I do.

Thanks everyone!

@hellokitty - That sounds like fun, when I've got a bit more confidence on the road! (and gear changes worked out properly... <_< )

@Hawkeye - Thanks! I'm going to make sure I've got the basics covered before I go on any major treks. :niceone:

@Reggie, YellowDog, Clean_up - Thanks! I'm going to be doing my best to stay safe, and I'm absolutely going to enjoy it! :)

@baptist - I'm planning on doing the Competent Rider course in a few months (before my Restricted, perhaps?). I really do like the Scorpio, I just need to grokk the clutch/throttle... :bleh:

Best place to learn the whole stop and start thing is just in a car park or in a block of streets that are purely residential which are quiet and the cars there move slowly. Way less pressure than the streets where boy racers show off their homo chromes

Let us know how your next ride goes.

Congrats

Congratulations Steelphoenix on Day ONE and your chioce of bike. The Scorpio will keep you interested way passed your 6F because it has enough power to cruise at 100kph and it looks modern. The GN is a little dated now. Regards Richard. PS remember SASS or NASS

The GN is a little dated now.

The GN was never "in" to be dated now. what an abomination. Good choice on the bike ;).

@Gibbo - Yeah, I spent most of yesterday afternoon foogling around in the backstreets of Mt Albert, practising gear changes and stops/starts. Less pressure makes it so much easier, and I'm definitely getting better! Then rode out to Westmere, to MOTAT (for volunteer night), and back.

@TheHovel - I'm really enjoying the Scorpio, she picks up very fast. Haven't had the confidence to go any faster than 60, but I'm sure I'll get up to 100 one of these days (when I have my Restricted, of course :msn-wink: ). Once I have the confidence to ride the bike further than about 10mins at a stretch, then I'll come to SASS... :)

@Cayman - The GN is cute, docile, and steady... not to my (our) taste, but some people like them... goodness knows why... :bleh::msn-wink:

Getting up past 60 won't take long. I started riding last Saturday, and first couple rides had no idea how I'd ever get past 60-70. Now it's pretty much road speed after doing just over 300km now. And maybe hitting 120 on a straight on a quiet country evening :innocent:

Best thing I've found is to find a learner car and then just place yourself behind it. Then you can go slow and learn and people behind you will be like oh... bloody learner car driver! (Note I don't wear the L plate as it's not suitable to go 70 and have logging trucks overtake you in the country )

Ain't had to overtake yet, shit scared for whenever I have to do that...
