View Full Version : First roundabout cutoff

 Had my first cutoff at a roundabout last night. And I could just see the look on the girls face expressing SIDSYM! Could see them coming so already adjusted my speed just in case and was going only 10km/h when they hooned passed a metre or so in front of me without giving me way.

This was followed by me following them down a good few roads and them starting to get a bit scared (got to love the big armour shoulder pads, must make you look quite menacing). Got to a stop sign and I stopped next to them, decided I won't be becoming a road rager and gave them the thumbs up and drove off.

Needless to say when I got to my next destination it was *555, followed by "report a bad driver" on the police website

Phew gets your heart racing though, but guess I had to come across some time sooner or later, albeit 10 days since my first ride (but 1000km under my belt). :innocent:

So you had 'a feeling' huh? Always listen to the voice/s...now you know why.
Good stuff

Usually when I get cut off at roundabouts it's by big truck and trailer units, they just carry on through and obviously figure that it's too much effort to stop, and you will to avoid getting squashed. Happens on an almost daily basis where I drive/ride.

Good effort thinking ahead for what the other idiot drivers might do.

Ahh but isn't that where you call the company of the trucker and report it directly to his superiors. I'm sure they won't look on it quite as casually as the driver does, giving the company a bad name

You say "first" as in you want more :innocent:

good on ya for trusting your instincts though. I know a lot of people who would have been like naaaah they've seen me and been a bit worse for wear!

Good on ya too for dialing *555 etc, not likely to do much excpet they get a letter in the mail, but at least it might make them think twice next time...

Haha, not that I want more. Just sadly so inevitable I'm sure. Now it's time to wait for someone to run a red light...

Only been through 3 traffic lights on my bike so far though ... not that I'm avoiding them...

Wait until your at the lights and your "spidey sense" goes off.

Seen it happen a couple of times, green light goes, you stay put for a bit and WOOSH a car goes flying through cos they're tryna catch an orange.

Always look both ways when crossing roads! haha

Haha, no it was a much bigger roundabout. The first in Papakura coming from Clevedon with the big shell next to it. So you know... Papakura drivers , though apparently according to State insurance my car resides in Papakura overnight so I get a great increased premium.

Fuck'n bureaucrats with their retarded addressing system.

Scary innit?

I had one on my way home yesterday.
Approaching the round about (on an 80km/hr stretch of road) Check mirrors, nothing of concern, check road to the right - clear, Only traffic was a small truck incomming from my left and a couple of cars about 500m behind me. Truck was stopping. All good. Just about to enter intersection I hear siren. Where is THAT coming from? Quick check nothing to my right, nothing behind me, see police car entering intersection from the hidden side of the truck on my left. Emergency stop in the intersection thinking if he is going left we are ok, IF he is crossing my path we got problems. Policeman obviously saw me, realised I was stoppig fast, waved as he turned left and I followed. Less than a bike length in it though.

Playing Devil's Advocate now ... was thinking about this one overnight and you do need to evaluate if you contributed to the incident by slowing down 'on suspiscion' possibly making the other driver think you were stopping or turning. Not saying you did but I have occasionally been bluffed bar car drivers appearing to set up for something but not actually doing it.

Rather slow down on suspicion than end up as strawberry jam.

If they see you slowing down and they go then they still deserve to be *555 or their door kicked or what ever.

I had a wank this morning and this afternoon.

I have now made this thread worth opening.

Shit happens and people make mistakes. You got cut off, deal with it tough guy.... I hope it's not all shoulder armour or someone may get out of their car and deal to you.

I hope you also mentioned to *555 that you followed them and tried to intimidate them, you already are guilty of road rage right there.

I cannot believe something so trivial is getting so much support. I commute a lot now and fuck me if I acted like this everytime shit happened i'd never get anywhere.

Edit, I just read it was a girl, and you were relying on your 'tough jacket' to scare her.....what a fucken hero. Try that shit with me boy and i'll rip your head off your shoulders you fucken bully.

What you did was worse.

She made a mistake, which she will probably learn from, which of-course you have never done eh? You however deliberately followed a young girl and tried your best to scare her. Where's the fucken glory in that? Why are you knobs supporting that? Are you tough guys that scare girls too? She may have tried to run away and in turn lost control, you already knew she was a bad driver and you then tried to escalate things....what does that make you?

I think I gave you green rep, be assured that was an accident.

and this is why i refuse to filter to the front at lights, no matter how far back i am. luckily, we dont seem to have many red light runners here, except for the psychlists. have seen a couple sneak through on the tail end of the orange, but not reds.

I had a guy wait until I was in the roundabout when he pulled out on me! He actually watched me enter the roundabout and then pulled out - then he slammed on his brakes trying to get me to run in to him. The best part was when he and his mates were giving me the finger and wanking signs.
Sadly for him, he was in his signwritten work van  I had the road, time of day, make, model and rego of the van. So when I emailed a complaint to the company - they were concerned enough to call me at work - they wanted to know if I wanted to take legal action. I was told that the guys were contractors and will probably lose their jobs over this. I just wanted them to be warned. The company spokesperson was spitting tacks he was so angry.

Dangerous and stupid way to have a laugh aye?

Anyway the moral of the story is people are always going to do dumb things - so expect it and live to ride another day........

I'm sorry I don't share the benefit of your experience, as the title says it was my "First cutoff". It's not like I sat at home thinking, now how am I going to approach this when it happens... Yes I followed her for a bit, I didn't know what else to do. I needed some time to mull it over and think what to do, hence the thumbs up and drive away after 60 seconds behind them.

A mistake is not nearly killing someone. Especially since I'm not used to people trying to kill me yet, though I'm sure more biking will eventually get that into my knoggin.

It's amazing that you can rant like that and not have road rage though... Must hide your anger while you ride very well. Note: not releasing emotional frustration has extremely detrimental effects on your mental health...

And yes it is all shoulder armour, I'm a short scrawny 18 year old that looks like he's 15 so intimidation is more a wishful thought than a true exposition of my ability to scare. Though that usually means any testoreroned up guy who wants to give me a whack doesn't want to risk getting charged with assault on a minor. You say if I follow you after you cut me off you'll get out of your car and road rage me?! What is this hypocrisy?!

A mistake is not nearly killing someone.

Get your hand off it. Exaggeration much?! She fucked up, I highly, highly doubt she looked at you and thought it would be fun to nearly take you out, she did'nt see you, that is a mistake. Your actions were deliberate.

It's amazing that you can rant like that and not have road rage though... Must hide your anger while you ride very well. Note: not releasing emotional frustration has extremely detrimental effects on your mental health...

There's a difference between venting and just not letting something upset you to the point of a psychotic rage, especially something so common. You will die of a stroke far before I do if such minor things are that upsetting to you. Point is mate, this stuff will happen to you a lot, car bike or firetruck with flashing lights and siren blaring, people will cut you off in all of the above because they don't look. It's not personal, it's just a lapse of concentration. Everyone including myself is guilty of it. Your day will be far better when you just shake your head and carry on, trust me.

Nope, I would pull over and ask you what the fuck your problem is, chances are I would'nt have cut you off, if I did, I know i'm not perfect, i'd apologise and get on with life, whilst telling you to get on with yours.
The reason for me berating you is because you think you're a big tough guy chasing little girls (i'm hoping you may not again after thinking it over).

If you are that worried about your physique, go to the gym, it may relieve some of that pressure off your swelling head, and do something more constructive for your ego, not being cheeky, you actually can bulk up if you put in the work-you only have one life man make it count.

In all honesty, you really need to not let these things set you off, the sooner you stop the better your life will be. Life really is'nt worth that, and you will do the same to others yourself, remember that next time you feel like raging up-that you too have made fuck-ups similar and when you did you felt like a real dick at the time.....it's no different for anyone else.

You must have seen other people nutting out before and thought to yourself 'what a psycho'! You don't really want to be that guy, wev'e all done it. Just don't do it again.

In the case somewhere above where it blatantly was done on purpose, then I fully support that action for the record, as that was deliberate.

For the record for those of you who are wondering, *555 does'nt do anything, your call gets answered downstairs in a who seperate room from the police commcen. The driver gets enough complaints they get a letter. That's it. Just incase you were wondering.

 I'm just a motorist making sure the car driver learnt her lesson. If I just drove off she might have thought it was just another traffic occurence she needn't worry about and have an "ooo clumsy me" moment. If I give her a little longer to think about it then it'll be more likely to stick in her memory and therefore she'll have learnt to "Think Once, Think Twice, THINK BIKE!"

If you are that worried about your physique, go to the gym, it may relieve some of that pressure off your swelling head, and do something more constructive for your ego, not being cheeky, you actually can bulk up if you put in the work-you only have one life man make it count.

Gyms contain jocks, jocks have the biggest egos and the dumbest minds. Not that it's their fault that all that goes on in their head is "run, run, run, run, row, row, row, row, protein, protein, run, run, run"

I'm in no way worried about my physique nor do I want to "bulk up", I have better things to do with my time than repetitive boring exercise.

It didn't set me off, I followed, thumbs upped, and left. Did you read some non-existend statement about me raping and pillaging her family?!

I see your point, but I didn't think I was nutting out by following someone? It sounds like you think I took a baseball back I mounted to the side of my bike to smash in their car more than just go down a few streets in which I might have been genuinely riding along to go to my house.

And as said when I stopped next to them I gave them the thumbs up, letting them know no hard feelings and that I was ok :niceone:

I have thought over what you have said, but I still don't think I would change what I did. Kudos to you for the way you deal with "wanks" as you say, but I'd much rather develop what suits me best rather than copy your "shake and go".

You still seem to be coming across with some kind of sexism, I don't know if your doing that intentionally... but "tough guy chasing a little girl" it sounds as though you wouldn't give as much of a shit if the driver had been a guy... I wasn't trying to be tough, I was trying to make sure she didn't do it again. Is that really such a bad thing to do?

I woud have done the same if it was a man, and I'm sure that guy would have to. I didn't do it because I get off intimidating some chick... Didn't think that people still thought that way, else I would have said person instead of woman. :wait:

When something like that happens you don't go thinking "oh that's a woman so now I'm going to go and hound her"

But if you treat chicks a certain way cause they're ladies then go back to what ever era you crawled out from.

My bike is my only transport, if I got wound up everytime I got cut up, cut off or not seen I would have had a heart attack by now. It is frustrating, it can be a cause of anger at times but breath deep, concentrate on riding and let it go, I do now, reflect on it later when you are at home (don't go and kick the cat aye... uuum on second thoughts ...:innocent:)

Im with the OP. it's scary when this sort of thing happens, especially when you aren't very experienced. I did a similar thing the first time this happened to me, a guy cut me off at a roundabout and when I tooted he stopped, looked at me and shrugged his shoulders and then took off again, so I followed him and had a wee chat with him about looking and being careful ect ( I was wearing a big orange hi vis jacket at the time as it was raining and I was on my way to work). If he had showed any sign of remorse or whatever I would have probably just pulled the fingers at him and carried on with my day. Since he seemed like it was the sort of thing that happened every day I wanted him to think about bikes and that a small fender bender for a car could mean crippling or killing a biker.
I'm a small guy too, and I do feel slightly more tough in my gear. But I would probably behave in the same way in a life or death situation if I wasn't wearing anything. My opinion is that you should let them know what they did wrong so maybe they will not do it again and, hopefully mention the incident to their friends so they can try avoid a similar experience. Most people on the road don't really want to kill you, even if they sometimes behave like they do ( and you should expect them to want to, for your own safety).

Hey bro. Heres something I have starting doing recently after getting fed up with people not giving way to me at round-abouts.
If I am going right, I flick my headlight on to high-beam just before I enter the round-about and leave it on until I exit. I have definately noticed people stopping alot more since I've started doing this.
I know its not strictly legal, but it works for me..... so far (knock on wood) and I will continue to do it.

Yeah I think people stop a lot more at night because they can see the lights coming even when they're dimmed. Daytime is however terrible, I was in my car and nearly t-boned a lady on christmas day, sooo close. She just waved her hand up in a sorry motion, how can people pay so little attention!

Went up to north shore today and back, 120km trip in car. Hadn't been on motorway in ages since I always avoid it and use back roads to Sylvia Park (even in car). Wow the way people just cut in and out, and can't merge onto the motorway without making people slam on their brakes. Must be a reason I still haven't taken my bike on the motorway

Need some intense road instruction like in Germany where you have to have a certain number of hours in a car with an instructor. Expensive, timely, but gets it into your brain for those nitwits who don't understand anything about driving except that they want to go somewhere and drive to get there.

Sounds like time spent with a Mentor would be ideal for you.
I understand where you're coming from. When I was on my 250, I didnt like the motorways and nearly kacked my daks the first time I went over the harbour bridge...lol Even now, on my 650 I am amazed at the stupidity and lack of awareness by motorists. You just have to take little steps at a time. Eventually your confidence will grow as you get more experienced.
Just remember to keep an eye on the vehicle at least 3 or 4 car lengths in front. Cars can all come to a slow down suddnenly on the motorway. Also, don't rely on solely on your mirrors, keep your head on a swivel and check your blind spot before changing lanes.
anyway..... like I said earlier. Get yourself a Mentor. Honestly, you will learn so much.
