View Full Version : Passing slower bikes on the left inside!

Riding back to Wellington from Wanganui on Sunday south of Levin. I was riding alone, when I heard some bikes behind me. Check my mirrors to see a bike on my right making a pass, so I started to manoeuvre to the left just as anther bike flashed passed me on my left inside!

I only pulled to the left so the bike on my right could pass me without needing to cross the centreline.

I've only been riding motorbikes for a year and a half now and have never seen or heard of this happing before. I did notice a lot of bikes parked outside of pubs along the journey back to Wellington, and wonder if alcohol had anything to with it.

My thinking now is to stay in the right hand wheel tracks and never pull to left, making all bikes pass me cross the centreline. I would like to hear the thoughts from some more experienced motorcyclists please.

That's called 'undertaking'. It is rare(ish), but does happen. It can and does give one a hell of a fright.
Check both mirrors more often to avoid being taken by surprise. You won't always stop others from doing it, but if you are always aware of what's behind you, at least you could maybe move left before some tosser commits...

Not a good practice at all ... but watch your mirrors as much as you can ... and be aware of what/who is behind ...

They were obviously much better riders than you,you should be in awe of their skills.

Undertaking (plural undertakings)

1.Specifically, the business of an undertaker, or the management of funerals.

Oh the irony......

The best thing to do is follow them once stopped let them know what wrong the rider did then follow it up with a punch to the nose.
I doubt any of his/her mates would back up that kinda dum riding, and if they do thats when you whack em in the face with a helmet.

I've done it to mates, sometimes on one wheel. But it's a bit rough to breeze by someone on the left if someone is already going past on the right.

Positive relations STOP when people try to kill me, biker or non biker
luckily only about 3-4 wing mirrors have suffered the consequences of this so far, but im more than happy to express my thoughts with a action of hand or boot:yes:

I have a "friend" who has done this to me two or three times. The last time he did it I told him in no uncertain terms what I thought of his actions. Funny, I haven't heard from him for a while.

Had it happen to me on SH1 coming down the Hatepe hill just as you get to the 70kmph zone in Waitetoko (which is just before Taupo) - 3 harleys blasted by me, one on the inside. I was doing the speed limit (70) and they were doing at least 100 when they came past me.

Fuckers were probably just jealous that I could corner better than them.

That or they just got sick of you holding em up,either way not something i would tell the world.Have to admit ive done it,twice from memory in 38 or so years riding, not something (obviously) i would make a habit of but both times probably a safer option than staying where i was.

Sometimes, it could be a safer option, and we've all done things on the road we regret :P

Don't see what I was doing that was unsafe and warranted such a maneuver though, I was doing 70 in a 70 zone, plus I often see cops in that area and know not to speed through there (my wallet certainly did $170 later!!)

I got the idea that it was kind of a show off thing on their part to be honest, which would make it kind of lame, but I could be wrong.

Been done to me, scared the poo out of me, so I repaid the event by undertaking his bike which was parked, with my HJ45 with big bullbar, guess what its not possible, but in this instance it was not possible to hurt anyone, which I pointed out to him.

Sounds like these guys had spent too much time watching far superior riders than them and got it into their head that they could emulate their abilities by showing how boss they are on the road.

In the future get the plate, stop, call *555 and lay a complaint, said idiot will end up in court and lose his license, as a friend of mine found out recently to his dismay. Then he'll have to sell his bike cause he can't ride it, and you'll scoop it up cheap on trademe cause you'll have passed your full license. Happy endings

There are three reasons I won't...

2) He's too ugly.

3) He's the wrong sex.

bloody good idea, it also stops cars pushing their way past you and running you off the road, used to ride a 350 matchless, it was for a couple of months my sole means of transport, and I had to do this otherwise I was literally run off the road

also if you travel about 5mph faster than the prevailing traffic you tend to have less hassle with people trying to get past

as for the tosser passing on the inside, dont even give him a second thought he will reap his just deserves in due course

however learn from the experience and keep an eye on both mirrors all the time whats behind you is almost as important as whats in front of you

People used to do this to me when I was driving my truck. I had a pair of stickers made with "passing side" on the right rear and "suicide" on the left rear. Will try and find some photos.
Used to give you one hell of a fright when you swing wide for a corner (indicating of course) and then find a cage or bike breezing up the inside.

I did this when learning to another rider. I apologised when we stopped. Never done it again.

V Good advice above.

Once had some fun when travelling to the 24hr Le Man bike race some years back. Had bikes passing me inside and out on the autoroute all the way there. They passed wing mirror close and after the first few er, surprises, I took it as normal. I was passing nose to tail cars doing 110/130 real close like relying on their wing mirrors being under or over mine, but I reckoned if I was to go any more conservativley I'd just cause problems for those overtaking which was like every bike - thousands of them. Eventually I upped to 140/150 (it was a CB750K2 so no mean feat for the poor thing) just to keep in the bike traffic speed, stay alive and only have a few speedy groups whiz past instead of the whole f. . .ing lot of them. Not one bike accident did I see over that weekend though.

Not one bike accident did I see over that weekend though. Yeah - but those were French bikers - they're nuts - the whole f**cking lot of them. Have you seen the scooter riders going through rush hour traffic on the Paris ring roads - traffic doing 0-20k and hordes of scooters and bikes threading through at 70-80k plus - we even saw one, cup of coffee in one hand, nonchalantly sticking his Piaggio through gaps even I 'd think twice about...... !!!

Thinking back on it, at the time it just sort of happened and it was over before I knew what had happened. The bike was long gone before I thought to get it's plate.
I didn't actually know (until just reading all the reply posts) how much of a no no it is to do. Next time it happens I will get the plate.

Just quietly on the side: A fixed camera on a bike taking constant footage but erasing it unless you hit a panic button just after an event, would have come in use here.

Thanks for all the feedback by the way.

It's not just a no-no...
It's illegal. Unless the vehicle you are passing is stationary.

Flicking on your left-hand indicator as you see then approaching from behind often has hilarious results.
And mostly they then don't undertake you...

That's quite a clever trick, this is assuming I see them in the mirrors in time.
