I can see it now.....compulsory breath testing on the dummy grid on the 2nd day...

Motards over 2 days....survivor wins...

Waimate or Wyndham would be the only two towns I know of where you could set up a circuit for 2 days without bringing the town to a standstill.

Interesting that it appears to be M/C Canterbury backed - it's been a very long time since they did anything away from permanent circuits.

The roads in Waimate are real wide and will be ideal for that sneaky pass without too much risk. Ideal for the sidecars and those mad as motard boys who seem to have a go at passing anywhere.(Or so i hear lol) I was lucky enough to be a part of the organizing and have been around the course a few times already.Track looks awesome. Should be a great outing.

It would have been fun. But with Pukekohe one weekend, then off to Perth for a week, back for Hampton Downs for the nationals then fly out to race at Barry Sheene Festival at Eastern Creek, I doubt I could fit it in.
Maybe next year.

My goal for 2011 is to do at least one race in the South Island. Would be awesome! I'd like to try Ruapuna and maybe Greymouth or Waimate if the weekends work out. I looked at the govt map for Waimate. I did not recognise anywhere/anything near it! Need to look into this further. What is the nearest city?

If you got to www.redlineracing.co.nz there is details of the classes in the downloadable entry and a map of where Waimate is as well.
According to the map Waimate is half way between Timaru and Oamaru.(About 35-40 mins from both.)
It is above sea level. I know this cause i dont have gills and can still get to one of the 7 pubs the town has to offer without swimming. However Crawling does come into it on odd occasions.lol
The curcuit is not the same one the cars used but does use about 20m of where their start line was.
Should be a map of the curcuit on the redline website soon. Very wide and a bit of everything.

If you don't get enough sidecars to run a class....and personally I doubt if you will...what about a BEARS class instead ? You should know if the chairs are go by the Sound of Thunder and if you've got to, ask for BEARS entries at the SoT.
Yes, W, i know you'll read this - do you think they'll get enough chairs ?
Loved the sound of banjos - maybe that's the name for this meeting....

Kickaha

I would doubt it, there's probably 4 from down here that would do it but I doubt any Northern outfits will come down as it's in between National rounds and some of the NI guys are heading over to Eastern creek and will probably be loaded in containers by then

I'd love to run the outfit at it but I can't see it happening

Grumph
4th January 2011, 16:24
Thanks, that confirms my thoughts...gap in the programme there i think.

The average BEARS club runner won't go up against moderns in that class stucture so it would really make sense to have a separate class IMO. And judging by Greymouth and Methven they wouldn't be short of entries.

Check with the organisers, there's a reason BEARs aren't already on the program but if they don't have enough outfits they may change there mind or then again they might just make the races longer

BEARS bikes made up the bulk of the F1 field at Nelson this year, but then there's a specific BEARS class as well (I think because the event is run under the BEARS licence). If MCI/CAMS are backing Waimate then that would explain the difference.

Two CAMS classes and Sidecars? Hope they order lots of cement and brooms ;)

Seriously though, with Wyndham, Greymouth, Methven, Nelson and now Waimate there's now a lot of street races in the SI. I reckon its time to link them together into a championship as a carrot to keep numbers up

ellipsis
4th January 2011, 17:40
...this meeting is a Redlineracing/MCI venture and CAMS members will be more than happy and eager to support as much of this kind of stuff as we can manage to squeeze in, down here. Good luck and all the kudos to the organisers for seeing it through. We are shortly to be up to our neck in getting METHVEN sorted out, we know the mission involved. More power to yer....

...as far as a street series...there is enough racing down here now to warrant it...in saying that...have you ever tried to hold three greased up seagulls in one hand while trying to eat your fish and chips with the other...be great though, would'nt it....

It would appear you can only bounce an RS125 off a house once before you lose the circuit....

Sydenham was used once years ago and is still the only feasible area - but it's all right angles....and you've got issues now with parking and spectator access.

With a bloody good permanent circuit on your doorstep it just doesn't make economic sense to look at a street circuit - even the car guys who were keen saw the costs as too great.

ellipsis
5th January 2011, 14:48
...Lyttelton also did a bit of Street Racing...bloody marvelous...that was then...this is now...it takes a lot of local support to get organising such stuff past the starting blocks....Southbridge...Rakaia...another couple that wont come back...not for the lack of trying though...

BUT BUT BUT!

The cyclists close off downtown....and they have their palendromes and closed circuits and parks and things and they close off sections of road on the hills for their wee races....so I want a go...

but you do make a good point regarding ruapuna, but a street race would get more publicity, both good and bad (if there's such a thing)

ellipsis

there used to be street races in new brighton a few years ago

Early nineties and only for two years, Joey Dunlop even rode at it along with a few of the Irish contingent who were here at the time

It would appear you can only bounce an RS125 off a house once before you lose the circuit....

It was very good from a spectator point of view though if you were standing across the road from said incident, I don't think people wandering across a unfenced circuit during the races would have helped much either

Sydenham was used once years ago and is still the only feasible area - but it's all right angles....and you've got issues now with parking and spectator access.

January 1985 and it was a round of the National champs and also the NZGP, I think Robert Holden broke his leg at it

A few names that competed at it are still around or became quite well known

Right angles is really the nature of most street circuits, Greymouth is for the most part and Nelson, Wanganui are a little bit luckier but not much

can we do a bit of m/c racing on there banked cycle tracks...yea right...

I think it would be ok for Buckets not to sure about F1

Could be the NZ Daytona 200 (metres)

There is a lot of support out here to reserect Southbridge as a street circuit.............however too many "old fart/fucwit/ web-footed/big hand - wobblyheaded locals who reside on all the local commitees that have too much of a say in such matters.
The last time a race was held in Southbridge the 4 Square owner donated $5000 to the local Plunket out of one days takings................ the pub is halfway down the main straight(how much beer would they sell!!!)

On a slightly biased note would be good to be able to ride the race bike to the track:yes:

It's always surprised me that the Bucket brigade haven't got onto Denton park oval.

However I doubt if they'd be allowed now...a few years ago i was there to watch a tryout by speedway TQ's and minisprints - very impressive and scary fast once they'd settled in. However the track damage was also impressive when a TQ hooked the wire fence and flipped....cycle officialdom were very upset...and the speedway guys were shocked at how much more damage concrete does than clay.

Southbridge was revived in the 80's for classic cars and bikes W - the meeting you're thinking of with Karts was early 70's on the short circuit in the township.
The short version is probably do - able again with enough local support. It is only about Methven length though so CAMS, Motards and BEARS...moderns to 600's ?

Kickaha

Southbridge ran Karts at the 1989 meeting ( I have a race program for it), which was probably the last one?

Spoke with the organizers yesterday about what they would do if a class didn't fill up enough to justify running and they said they would add laps to the other classes rather than introduce a BEARS class. Those bikes would have to slot in to the existing classes if they want to ride. (Who knows they may change their minds.)
Would be really good to see enough bikes to fill all the grids especially being a 2 day event.
So get your entries in people.

Wouldn't that bike track be awesome as a motorbike event.
Start around by the river, up Hackthorn road to the turn down hill to colombo rondabout, left on Centaurus then wind ya way back to the start line.
Hell with that downhill, you may as well stop each lap and chug a beer.

Wonder how many hoops youd have to jump through to get that puppy off the ground?

Wont need to worry now as have just read its called off for this year due to a hickup in permit timming:facepalm:

Okey Dokey
13th February 2011, 09:48
Yes, it is called off. According to an article in the ODT, the organiser read the MNZ book rule book and applied for and received sanction to run the event, and organised all the road closures etc with the local council.

He subsequently read in a different section of the rule book that he needed to have applied for the sanction at least 3 months before the event is run. His application was not within this time frame. Therefore, he could have been held liable if there were any mishaps during the event.

He has requested that MNZ place the deadline information in the same section of the rule book as sanctioning an event, rather than 3 chapters later. He is also organising the evnt for next year.

I wish him all the best!
