To your dissapointment I have to say that he is not that great a drummer. I'm picking you aren't a drummer but listen to Nirvana's songs and most of them are the same beat and fills. His solo's are okay but his drumming ability in Nirvana was absolute crap.

I will give him credit for that work as it is much improved of his Nirvana days. He is also with Tenacious D, Probot and produces some underground heavy rock bands albums in The States. Have you seen his version of 'Stairway To Heaven' originally by 'Led Zeppelin'???

Hmmmm - I loathe the term "best" when talking about Musicians. For instance the chick in The White Stripes is perfect for The White Stripes. No one else could contrive that barely competent, don't give a f__k style and pull it off.
Drummers you (and others) should check out who would blow your mind would be (IMO)
Zigaboo Modeliste
Steve Smith
Bill Bruford
Thomas Lang
Carter Beauford
Matt Chamberlain
Jay Lane
Brain
Josh Freese
Billy Ward (not the Black Sabbath dude, but he's good too)
Tim Alexander
Raymond Herrera
Virgil Donati
I could go on an on......
You should stop me.

Ronnie Verrell was a bloody good drummer, his career covering Big Band, small Jazz combos, and then faithfully replicating different musical and personal styles for the huge range of stuff the Muppets covered musically. IMO he handed Buddy Rich his arse musically on the episode where they had a drum battle.

There's a lot of drummers mentioned in the first post that I wouldn't rate highly at all - guess that's why there's so many, huh?
Those I do rate highly are:
Iain Paice
(the late) John Bonham
(the late) Cozy Powell
Carmine Appice

Tony Williams

As Jim said, I dont like the word "best" when it comes to musicians... there are varied tastes and appreciation levels. At the end of the day, there are only a certian amount of techniques and sounds any specific instrument can make and all musicians of a high calibur have experimented and found them. :spudguita

Loved a lot of Dave Lombardo's stuff while touring with Fantomas (twice!) *SQUEE!*
Tomas Haake from Meshuggah is an absolute legend. Absolutely nutty timings.
Not that fussed with Danny Carey. Seems fairly pedestrian.
Ray Herrera: Nice guy in person. Good with the double kick, innovative, but definately not near the best.

No one's mentioned Jimmy Chamberlin from Smashing Pumpkins, and just like Bonham he has a jazz background too. Hats off to anyone that can carry multiple beats with different time steps and do it all whilst loaded on heroin.

Me too for Neil Peart as the best rock drummer of them all.
Modern Drummer magazine likes him too. Bling to you Henry.
Buddy Rich was probably a better percussionist (YMMV) but by all accounts he was a total cock to work with, there was a reason he was freelance!
Mitch Mitchell was vastly underrated IMHO. He gave a lot of structure to the Hendrix guitar work and without him Jimi sounded disorganised.

nicko Mcbrain has such a unique sound
ever watched the death on the road DVD? the Drum tech at the studio says his sounds owe to the fact that he doesn't take alot of time setting up mic's for the drums, just throws them down. If nicko hits them well, it'll sound good, if he doesn't, it won't. says alot for the mans skill

Not technically that great perhaps, but it really worked for the song.
The drum track was recorded by Lenny. Mr Kravitz lays down most of the instruments on his recordings. Technique is overrated, especially where it ruins a perfectly good song.
The "chick" is Cindy Blackman and technically she'd kick the arse of a lot of the lunk heads people have called good drummers in this thread. She was building a rep as a Jazz Drummer before Lenny picked her for his band.

What does velocity have to do with drumming? You should listen to the entire Muse catalogue instead of the last droning failure of an album. There's definitely velocity if you know what you're listening for.

I've been listening to the Masters of Reality's Sunrise on the Sufferbus album again recently...Ginger Baker on waay better form than that insipid Cream re-hash. If'n you like good drumming and you haven't heard it, you really should.
If you're searching for tracks, "Tilt-a-Whirl" and "She Got Me" seem to be the easiest to find but "T.U.S.A" is a very amusing Ginger Baker penned and vocalised (wouldn't say sung!) whinge about 'merkins ability to make decent tea and the source of my sig quote...

You shouldn't bite the first long line that comes your way.
it was probably the 'last dronig failure' thing
i wasnt as good, but it definately wasn't a droning failure
anyway good drummer, lots of off beat stuff, jazz influence i believe, and skill beyond demisemiquaver triplets

I think Phil Collins is the best-he is a real `machine' :gob:.
I used to be in love with the drummer from The Police...didn't notice if he could play very well or not but he was very Hot:yes::drool:

Bought my first drum kit not even a month ago. Loving it, loving it. Just have to find a local place for lessons!

Do you mean Budgie, the drummer for Siouxsie and the Banshees, or Budgie the band in which case three different drummers (Ray Phillips, a name I can't remember and Steve Williams)...?

You people who never listen to jazz or latin music in its various guises are significantly narrowing your range of choices for "best drummer". There are whole worlds of music out there other than those broadcast on New Zealand commercial radio.
Size of drum kit or number of records sold is no vindication of musical virtuosity.

I wouldn't know about that, I don't much listen to local radio.
Was pleased to see Gene Krupa got a belated mention, likewise Jim Keltner.
So far don't see Ritchie Havens (Little Feat) get a mention...
