View Full Version : Gotta buy new boots, so wanna see if there are better models for our riding

So, did a search .... and yeap a screed of useless info popped up.

So all I wonna know for ADv riding has there been a general consensus on a brand or model that is better for road/adv/trail riding.

Gotta get some for DB thou cos I took mine to the local Cobbler who says my sole are injection molded soft poos that he can not successfully graft new soles to!

They are snow board boots to so maybe it is time to step up to the real world.

No consensus. People use all sorts of stuff.

I've got proper MX boots which I use for trail rides and sometimes short gnarly/dirty adventure rides. Too stiff, bulky & uncomfortable for use on long trips or much walking.

I've got waterproof road boots which are used for the bulk of adventure rides esp. touring. Don't care how wet/muddy they get, but they are more comfortable to wear.

Used to have only a pair of Styl Martin "Safety 1" boots, which were a cross-over. MX-style buckles down low, road boot type top, waterproof membrane, weight of construction somewhere between the two. They worked very well, a good compromise.

Same as Colin, just use Sidi road boots, comfortable, light and waterproof, I found MX boots way to bulky for adventure riding.

I got fox mx boots with tread. Once they are soft they are good , but I took the buckle off where my ankle pivots for better mobility. I get a blister on my gearchange toe on long rides so wear thick socks to avoid this, otherwise fine on long days. Not waterproof and would buy again.

My dririder road boots fell apart very fast when I discovered standing.

My dririder road boots fell apart very fast when I discovered standing.Yeah, one other thing: the MX boots' stiff sole that makes walking horrible, makes standing on the pegs a pleasure. And vice versa for the road boots' more flexible sole.

Whatever I buy I will be using on our big round the blocker from Alaska to Ushuaia in South America next year so the comfort thing is a must as I will be in them many hours a day for a year or more.

Where to buy the Forma adv boots?

Waterproof, comfortable, chemical/oil rated non-slip sole thingy, nice to walk in.

I've got a set of Stylmartin Active Trail, similar to the Forma Mud boots but just a touch beefier. They didn't stay waterproof for very long but offer a good level of protection while still being good to walk in - We'll quite often go for a walk somewhere when touring & I think nothing of doing a 10km + hike in them. I've had to have a couple of bits re stitched on them but they have done 60K km of riding & a few crashes now.

I also have a set of proper MX boots for more hardcore trail riding.

I am currently lusting after a set of the new Sidi Adventure Goretex boots - they look to have a great combination of protection, flexibility & waterproofing. $$$ though.

Cheers
Clint

When I started trail riding with my son (who at that stage was 10 years old) Gareth Morgan told me to buy Trials Boots as they were good to walk in and also had good tread on the sole. They are not as high as motorcross boots but still offer good protection.

The downsides of waterproof boots is that if you go into streams where the level is above the membrane you have wet feet for the rest of the day. They don't dry out.

Also most waterproof boot rely on membranes that don't cope well with sweaty feet & dirt for too long. Mine leak eventually.

That's why I'll go for Goretex next time I get boots. I have a 10 yr old pair of Miendl Goretex tramping boots that have done heaps of work, seen lots of mud & sweat & they are still fairly waterproof. They breathe well enough that they do dry out after immersion.

Cheers

The downsides of waterproof boots is that if you go into streams where the level is above the membrane you have wet feet for the rest of the day. They don't dry out. In theory what we are calling "waterproof" boots breathe - that's the point of the fancy schmancy micropore membranes and what differentiates them from gumboots! Normal boots don't dry out, either, IME.

Also most waterproof boot rely on membranes that don't cope well with sweaty feet & dirt for too long. Mine leak eventually.Like gloves and everything else. The membranes need particular cleaning and also can split if not a good fit and/or design (money well spent here). The trick is to make the membrane the last rather than the only line of defense. ie use rubber overboots, washing up-type gloves (the manly ones from NZ Safety or similar) and a pvc oversuit to keep the worst of the weather off. Then keep the outer of the boots/gloves/suit regularly re-waterproofed, leaving the membrane as the third layer. In less atrocious and/or patchy weather just the outer & membrane should do the job.

One of the reasons gen-you-whine GoreTex gear costs more is that it is designed better. GoreTex won't wholesale their product to just anyone - you have to prove your gear is worthy of the GoreTex name. Nowadays there's plenty of similar products around, some are even designed more for motorcycle use, but unfortunately there are no controls on their implementation so it often gets put in shitty gear that doesn't perform or last.

Thems Oxtar/TCX look very similar to the Styl Martins I had.

As an aside, many RTW travelers wear good solid tramping boots. They figure when on the bikes they are comparatively taking it easy, speeds are down, and comfort/capability off the bike is much more important.

Made to measure, cheaper than fancy MX boots, hardy as hell, feet were warm in the alps last winter splashing through iced over puddles, can hike for miles in them or ride.

G'day Andi,
I did the research and had a look at a few pairs - the Forma Adv were my choice as well - they look like a good bit of kit and without the "tall" toe of most MX boots - good choice:niceone:, I look forward to a gander on the DB - unfortunatly my wallet only stretched to a 2nd hand pair of Forma MX boots so will have to shift my shift up a notch and be uncomfortable for next weekend or go with the cheap old road boots??????

Another one looking.
Kind of tossing a coin over the TCX Infinity. Everyone I know with them still has dry feet except when the fords go over the top.
Or the Forma ATV boot... which IMO look nicer, have a better dirt walking sole and are more affordable. Kind of made up my mind i think.

The sole if the Infinity is very nice to walk in and surprisingly grippy.
I felt more comfortable clambering around rocks and slips taking photos on with them on than with MX boots.

The Forma ATV didn't really work for me. like the look but not so sure about the fit.

Ended up with the Alpinestar Scout boot (http://www.alpinestars.com/Scout_Waterproof_Boot/pd/np/113/p/204700.html). $499.
Seem to hold me in all the right places.

May have gone the TCX Infinity but was in a hurry (bits opening up and also the sole falling off my old boots) and the local shops didn't have any to try.
Did try on the Poms ones and almost right but would want to try the next size up to be sure.

Thats a nice looking boot. I hate all the plastic on boots. Stitching between the plastic and leather always seems to die. Keen to have a look at the DB.

I brought back some Sidi Adventures from a recent visit to the US last year and found them to be fantastic for dual sport or even straight tarmac riding. They were around 375US.
