Hi fellow riders,
I am planning to buy a hurricane better known as CBR1000f.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=346160444
I have been riding a cruiser for 6 years now and want to switch over to a sports tourer for a while. I recently did 2500 kms over south island in 4 days basically to get a hang of biking style that i am getting into (it was a Yamaha FZ 6) and I quite comfortably glided through the entire trip considering during Christmas there was a pretty f***ked up storm over the island making riding conditions quite terrible.
I am looking for some very quick suggestions about few concerns:
1) is it a good move? i mean the bike? i hope it won't be too much than i can chew. I took it out for a spin today and was quite happy with the riding position(almost felt like sitting on a couch really). Sounded good with stock pipes.
2) The gears were slightly tight. spl the first gear. The bike hasn't been ridden for a while due to the current owner hip injury(i think the bike has done a 1000km in 14 months). So could that be the reason. At least that's what the owner told me
3) And this one is a real pain even as i write. The speedo limits to 180 kms. Now i have spend 3 hours looking for what it means and finally found a guy in some other thread saying : this is a sign that the bike's got a speed limiter. Now I wasn't too impressed reading that.Is that correct? Is there a way i can get rid of the limiter? Not that i want to go beyond 180 but it's good to know if the bike is capable of doing more :)
I really look forward for all ur suggestions and opinion
I have to make a call by friday even, so a prompt reply would really help :)
Cheers!

The same guy has had it for last 5 years. Got it serviced from TSS motorcycles (Red baron i guess). Will be checking history and getting an opinion from them while updating the wof.... IF I DECIDE TO GO THROUGH THE SALE

first stop telling lies. if you didnt wanna go that fast, you wouldnt car what the speedo said, as long as it had one!!
dunno if they have limiters or not, sometimes different models will have different specs, i.e. a uk model has a speedo that goes up to abc, but a yank model speedo goes up to xyz. I wouldn worry about it. even if it is limited, on something of that vintage, it would be a piece of cake to remove the limiter anyways

Prob a jap import and the speedos only go to 180 by law (cars included). Might be restricted to that electronically and if so there are probably 10,000 threads about unrestricting it on various forums.
Iconic bike in its day with a LOT of fairings to remove everytime it needs attention.
Mate - its what, 16, 17 years old? Factor in a few issues with age like electrical connectors, battery, tyres, rect/reg, dry bearings and expect a few minor hassles and you should be fine (as long as you can do a few things yourself)

CBR1000F speedo's usually read to 300 km/hr (top speed 256 km/hr) / 6 speed gearbox. I did read of some californian / japanese models being detuned + only 5 speed. Also the 1000F's after 1991 came with linked breaks.
Maintenance :
every 12,000 km = Oil change, spark plugs & valve inspection / adjustmentment (via screw lock type). easy to do yourself if do own maintenance.
Issues (not even):
Turns heads where ever you go resulting in extended re-fuel times.
I've herd a rumour of regulator / rectifier spontaneously combusting (don't they all).
Most high milage cbr's suffer from a bit of cam chain rattle at cold start up (doesn't hurt the engine at all). if it didn't rattle it's a good one !
The build quality of these 'older' bikes is second to none & as a commuter bike really stands up to the Wellywood elements while everyone else gets blown all over the show.
I absolutely love my cbr, extremely comfortable & reliable bike for all weathers, that bike must be in show room condition at that mileage !

Mady!!
can't find one which ACTUALLY talks about the solution. Came across few which talked about CDI (shorting some two wires) and some about how a TRE(installing one) can help. Aren't they gonna be specific to bikes. I mean reading a kawa zx10 or a cbr600 f2 thread, will it be of any help. Again even there, ppl throw in suggestions by saying, do this do that.. Is there a HOW somewhere sitting in the corner??
Can you point me to the right direction!
Appreciate your help!
Cheers!

Why are you planning on exceeding 180km on a sports tourer?
I should think having the smaller range on the speedo would make it easier to know how fast you're going.

Why anyone would commit such Sacrilege to a 135 hp sports tourer is beyond me.
It would suit a dayly ride / commuter / tourer where the 180 km/hr isn't an issue. If for track days & max performance .... i can't comment sorry. Either way if you successfully de-restrict the old girl the speedo will still only go to 180 km/h !
I've had a look at the CBR Forum (http://cbrforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=38) but can't find anything about restricted versions, they must be pretty rare ! (& so they should be)
It's a lot of lovely looking bike & well worth it for that price provided it came with a current WOF.
Would be good to know when the last Valve adjustment was done for peace of mind.

Sorry - I dont know enough about that specific model as all my bikes are ancient and limited by design. But I really wouldnt worry about it enough to affect my purchase at that price / mileage.
You have to realise that the restriction (if it exists) could be mechanical (restrictor plate in carbs) electronic (ecu) or speedo (does not limit power, just speed)
Once you have it you have time to look around.
