Road legal ones are about a grand more expensive than trail only models - is this right?
Can a trailbike model be vinned etc if fitted with lites etc?
What are the common faults with them?

if there a grand more for the road ones, whats the point putting lights and shit on and vinning an offroad one, prolly end up around the same price

Totally Iwas just putting it out there to see if someone had done it before.

I had a KLX, they're road legal. They come out as just that one spec', not like the DRZs. Was a better compromise for me, minimum equipment but road legal as standard and the full enduro-spec's motor.
Not yellow was a bonus.
Ah, faults. They don't really have any. Not like shit breaking all the time, they're pretty bulletproof. The only really common bitch is the gears are pretty close, so if you gear it for tight stuff they're a bit buzzy at motorway speeds.

the bit about KLX's only being road legal isn't true, I have a 2003 KLX400R offroad only model, basically the DRZ400E model with green plastics. Different rear subframe than the road model and an unrestricted exhaust are the only major differences.
They are really great bikes, check out www.thumpertalk.com under the DRZ400 FAQ section.
I'm looking at selling my KLX soon as I just got my learners, looking at buying a TTR250 road legal dirtbike instead, and in a years time when I get my full, I'll be looking for a road legal KLX400 or DRZ400 :D got sick of trailering it around ;)
I think it would be much easier to just buy the road legal version. You'd need a new wiring harness and rear subframe, lights speedo, DOT approved wheels etc... quite a lot of work unless you can get a really good deal on an offroad model to make it worth your while.

I have yet to see anyone take an offrd 400 through vinning. It's definitely been covered before in here somewhere but there's none of the stuff you need to get it done, so it's from bare bones that it needs to be compliant.
Just buy a road legal one.

14th January 2011, 13:00
Oh and no real faults except riders outgrowing them or getting sick of the highway compromise and finding another compromise to pursue instead. I'd own another one if I could afford more than one bike. That and an XR 650 R adventurised.

Padmei, just talk to me or Topo.:niceone:
Watch TM, most of the road legal specced ones are leccy start, and a dead giveaway from photos will be the toolkit/lunchbox kit on the rear guard. Oh, and the number plate, lol.
Just have some spare sprockets in your workshop to play around with gearing ratios.
Here's a rough dirt only version in Nelson

DRZ`s are good bikes, not much goes wrong with them if looked after, and if tuning is your thing then there`s all sorts you can do!

I purchased a DRZ400e off a guy that had purchased from new and used only as a dirt/trail bike, he had put rego on hold..so no prob to re-register..I wouldn't do it again as even at only 7thou K's it has been pretty well hammered, suspension, rims etc on the trails..I would prob want to purchase a road version 'e' as it would prob be in better nick and had lived an easier life on the road..I looked at a few that weren't rego'd etc and it was going to be too much of a mish..time and price wise..fun bike though if you know it's limits..

There are 2 different road legal models that were imported into NZ.
Most of them are the E model and they are more powerful than the S model.
E model is identical to the off road version just with the road legal bits.
S model has CV carb not pumper carb, lower compression ratio - different rear muffler and most of them have steel tanks. They also have slightly different suspension valving and different gearing.
In my E model i run the same gearing as the S model to make it slightly less buzzy on the road sections and to improve the fuel distance on a tank.
The only downside to this is that it will only wheelstand in 1st gear when running that gearing.
Only ever change the sprockets back, once in a blue moon for totaly off road based adv riding like CNUT hill for example.
Seat is a total plank though your arse does get used to it after a while.

the bit about KLX's only being road legal isn't true,
Now that you mention it I did know that. :second:
What I meant to say was that the engines on all the KLX's are "E spec". From memory 37hp vs 34hp, although I've drag raced S models before and there's bugger all difference. The pumper is good for fast response but I reckon the CV item is easier to use in the slime.

Standard DRZ offroad model has a different headlight, so you're up for $500 for the 'dipper' unit before you even start ($400 for the light + the shroud). Road DRZ runs the same as DR650 light.
As said, most road legal models in NZ are the 'E' model. I couldn't fault mine. Only issue was the close ratio gearbox so the long road miles become tiresome. If only they had a 6th gear......you could almost paint it orange.

From what I`ve heard the S or E forks are better for off road use as that`s what those bikes are aimed more towards.
The S and SM are basically the same bike engine wise, not as good as an E with the FCR carb, cams and pipe. Standard version S and SM`s are underpowered IMO.

Ok here's a question to all those who have owned either 350 or 400. Which would you have prefered - the 6th gear of the 350 or leccy start ofthe 400.
At the mo I'm leaningtowards the leccy start due to river crossings, stalling in tight places - ah fck it I'm not gonna be doing big long miles on it I've answered my own question - as you were...

I like the air cooled, less to break, simplicity of the 350

I've owned both. The 350 is a bit more 'dual sport'. Kind of soft and squishy. Good for long miles, but really a bit of a yawn. Most are a bit long in the tooth now. Mine was a real bitch to kick at times, which was the main reason for going to the 400 with the magic button.
The 400 is a lot more exciting. Heaps more power and a lot better suspension and handling. Only problem is the plank of a seat and the close gearbox. As stated, the gearbox issue can be sorted by playing around with sprockets.
If you're talking more offroad, the DRZ400 (E) is a pretty good weapon.:msn-wink: It'll keep most modern dirt bikes honest in the right hands, and you only have to change the oil every....um....oil....whats that?

Have a go up the Maunga to the summit on mine and then Jatzzzz'z 350's.
As long as you're not standing, Jatz'z'zz DR350 has better suspension, brilliant brakes, firmer seat and more torque.
I wasn't reaching top revs in 6th coming up the long hill with the passing zone from Hori Bay to the Wangamoa Summit and Jatz pulls up alongside, points down and then changes into top...

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/padmei_crayfish/2011-03-12_15-05-37_636.jpg
It is a 2005 & done around 8k. I bought it after looking around for a while however no road legal cheap ones came up that were worth what they were asking for them so I spent $4K & got a pretty original one.
It was also in Blenheim so the transportation costs were a bagel & flat white at the 3 bears cafe.
The battery is flat which caused a few laughs crash starting it & soon became a tad annoying when I dropped it in the forest many times.
The ergos are pretty good for me for a stock bike.I put on my 25mm or so risers. But still can do with a bit more height when standing. The seat is a tad on the harsh side (bad move swapping to Nordies' lazyboy seat halfway back from Blenheim so he could have a ride) however not really as bad as I expected.
Nordie & I went for a blast in the forest on Sunday on the lite bikes & it was very different style of riding.
I found it a very different style of riding. On steep ascents I haven't quite worked out where I should be on the bike. It will come it time tho.
The tyres are trailwings & I agree with Nordie that altho the tread style is deep the compound seems too hard & unforgiving.I really like having a 606 knobbly on the front & after dropping the front so many times on Sunday I can't wait to have something with a good side knob.
Now my first questions. I have fitted the 606 fromthe KLR on the front however the valve is skewed. Is there an easyish way to get the tube back into position. I have a rimlock but it isn't tightened nor the tube blown up.

Now my first questions. I have fitted the 606 fromthe KLR on the front however the valve is skewed. Is there an easyish way to get the tube back into position. I have a rimlock but it isn't tightened nor the tube blown up.You must break the bead off the rim again, turn the tyre relative to the rim until it is straight - sometimes can be hard with a rimlock. And/or put up with it. How skewed? Also, is it skewed on the safe side, or the bad side? ie braking forces are an issue at the front, are braking forces going to straighten the valve, or is it already past upright... if you get my drift? 'cos if it's the safe side, who cares if it's not straight.

If the valve is pointing backwards a bit when at the bottom then no problem but as WW says, loosen the rimlock, push it in, push the bead in on both sides and turn the tyre a bit.

Good score, Identical to my old bike.
I had some issues with the front washing out even with full comp knobs. Best I found were Mich S12's but they don't wear well. I eventually dropped the forks almost all the way and let the back preload down more than the book said to rake it out a bit. It helped, but I'd still loose the front if I got so tired I wasn't moving forward enough.
I also put some high bars on mine, this was instead of the 1" risers I'd had on up to that point, can't remember the dimensions, (+2"?) but I had to order it in, wasn't a stock item.

Not having a kickstart scares the crap out of me on solo or remote trips, trying to crash start a bike in bouldery/muddy sections is often simply not possible. Advgd I would offer thousands less than what they are asking. Bikes aren't moving & bikeshops are needing to get rid of stock.
I think you are doing the right thing buying 2nd hand. Even tho they have the reputation of being bulletproof it is surprising how many new bikes have had work done after relatively few Ks. At least the owners have had a chance to iron out any problems from new.
I have bent my original steel bars already so have a set of higher bars coming in this week.
606 went on today - funnilyenough the tube corrected iteself overnite. The trailwing is now on the KLR.
BTW I think I'll let the natural environment decorate this bike.

Agreed, my main concern with buying second hand is mainly:
a) people fail to upkeep the bike re maintenance
b) when they do maintain them they are rough as guts and do all sorts of horridly wrong things like over-tightening, under-tightening, or the dreaded "oh, why do I have this bolt left over?"

b) when they do maintain them they are rough as guts and do all sorts of horridly wrong things like over-tightening, under-tightening, or the dreaded "oh, why do I have this bolt left over?"
I've heard of more stories of woe from people taking their bikes to workshops & the mechanics saying " nah you're imagining those noises just ride them they're bulletproof" Then having to take them to another mechanic when they break.

By definition, if Padmei rides a bike, it no longer has straight bars.

I'd be more concerned about burning yourself out.

How are you heating the jacket?

I was gonna plugit into the battery via RCA outlet by GPS outlet but sounds like I won't have muchto play with. Gonna be fun finding the right amount of wire to use :shit: Luckily I have a few people who know aboutwires &stuff

I think the KLX's are all equivalent to the DRZ-E.
The easy way to figure it is .... plastic tank for the enduro version, tin tank for the S and SM.

I rode that beast in motard trim & even then it was a great gravel bike.
Real keen to see how it goes, now that it's "adventurised".
