Tibetan goat track: East Cape beware

Did a Two Day fang around East cape Last week,A mate managed to flip his gsxr1000 over the front on a dodgy piece of seal between Te Araroa and Ruatoria turnoff.I would not have believed it if i had not seen it happen.He was probably 10kmh too fast for the road conditions,but probably within the legal limit.Bike crossed the centerline and ended up in ditch on the other side.Lucky there was no oncoming traffic or marker posts or lamposts.This will happen again ans has probably happened before,so if your doing the East Cape take your time on this piece of road.

My condolences but...

East Cape doesn't have a big population. It probably does, however, have a big unemployment problem. So there's a lot of road, and not a lot of money to pay for work on it.

None of this should be news. It has been that way for a long time.

It's a great ride but you do need to keep something in reserve.
Expect the unexpected.

Last time I went through I nearly got taken out on a corner by the local plumber's van. I reacted by creating a different cornering line. One that kept my head on my side of the road.

East cape has been like that for ages. The uneven surface signs there are an understatement for the leaps and falls you face.

Quite the opposite to other areas where you question why the signs were even put there.

Its a well known issue there and won't be fixed anytime soon.

Anyone riding within their skills and to the road conditions will see these areas before they kill themselves eh, so, a good lesson learn't and no-one dead, gotta be an ok result!:niceone:

Went around the cape yesterday, yes sections of that road are a bit third world, but if you ride to the conditions and observe warning signs (eneven surface etc) its ok. BTW, 576kms, 6hr 55, av 82km.

Do you mean that there was a little ledge or something on the road that just grabbed his wheel, stopped him dead in his tracks and spit him off?

That sounds like when you go just a tad too SLOW over a tree root on a dirt bike and get catapulted over the bars.

That is insane to hear it happen on the road.
