View Full Version : Masterchef ADV style. Who is keen?

Clint and I were thinking about organising a central north island ride later in the summer, when we came up with an evil plan :devil2:
The Masterchef Adventure ride
Think of it as the evil twin of the CCCC ride: gravel roads, camping, good food, beverages... except you have to carry it all there on your bike :scooter:
The constraints of adventure camping means that the food will be quite different to the CCCC, but that doesn't mean we have to survive on freeze-dry...
I would supply recipes ahead of time (matched to cooking abilities), everyone cooks up their designated dish (maybe in pairs? who knows), then we enjoy our Masterchef buffet, while critiquing others cooking abilities.
Recipes would be chosen so that they are suitable for adventure touring: easy to prepare, ingredients you can (usually) find at the supermarket, non-perishable and pack fairly small.
Is this a good idea? If so, where would be a good place to camp?

I got the idea from Chris's Pureora ride report, where he was away from home less than 48 hours, and had to resort to cooking some dodgy looking freeze-dried thing.
I don't think Gordon Ramsey will be able to make it. I can arrange for someone else to swear at you while you are cooking, if you would like.

Pick a route suitable for my ever so tentatively adventurous bike & I will contribute the finest camp fire curry known to humanity & we can all do a rousing rendition of the Auckland Philharmonic brass section after a couple of beers or play who can fire a peanut the farthest without shitting themselves. PM for peanut farting rules & technique.
Ahh, the joys of sleeping under the stars.

Sounds interesting Rosie, we will need some one with a KLR to carry the BBQ tho!
I will hunt out my gas cooker and practise campfire recipes, how about somewhere near a lake or river so we can fall in and practise drowning as well.

Great to see so much interest in the ride :niceone:
I'll start thinking about possible dates, and post up some suggestions.
I am still open to suggestions for a good place to camp/ride.
Thinking out loud here... There are quite a few campsites along the Waikaremoana road, including the aptly named Rosie Bay (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/east-coast/te-urewera/rosie-bay/) (although it's quite small, and may be popular being free, and next to the lake)
From Waikaremoana we could be well placed to do some exploring around some of the roads between Wairoa and Matawai.
Or, the Kuripapango (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/hawkes-bay/kuripapango-ox-bow-campsite/), or Lawrence (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/hawkes-bay/lawrence/) camp sites on the Napier Taihape could give us a chance to ride the last little bit of gravel, before it is gone forever.
There are a few campsites around Pureora, but I'd have to give some thought to the gravel roads we could do in the area.
Let me know if there are any other good places we could go. I will peruse maps over the weekend.

I got the idea from Chris's Pureora ride report, where he was away from home less than 48 hours, and had to resort to cooking some dodgy looking freeze-dried thing.
As the inspiration for this idea, I am definitely keen.
The campsites in Pueroa were pretty good, good creek/river to clean/swim in, and bbq's provided.

First of all I'd just like to state for the record the CCCC ride will be a 'Man BBQ'!
Second, Rosie & Clint, to make it more evil, you could keep the recipes to yourselves and divide up the ingredients amoungst those attending to bring and then give the recipes/ingredients out on the day.......

I would prefer Central verses Eastern. I will put my thinking cap on.... By a river or lake? Thermal area? (and near a good take away shop..)

I think that going shopping and selecting the right ingredients is an important step in the path to becoming a master adventure chef.
While surprise recipes could be extremely amusing, I have to eat this food too, so setting people up for failure may not be a good strategy.

Yes. People can either decide what to cook themselves, or I can supply a recipe. Recipes will be matched with peoples cooking abilities.
One recipe/dish/whatever between two people should provide plenty of food. And things cooked by committee have to taste better, right?
And we have narrowed it down to two campsites:
Mangamate (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/east-coast/te-urewera/mangamate/), at the start of the Waikaremoana road
Or, Lake Rerewhakaaitu (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/bay-of-plenty/rotorua-lakes/rerewhakaaitu-ash-pit-rd/), south of Rotorua.
I've never been to Rerewhakaaitu, so I'll pop down one evening this week and check it out. Mangamate has recently been done up a bit, and has a nice big dining shelter.

A camp site with a hot pool, close to a pie shop:love::love: and within walking distance of a latte making outfit.
Not to long a walk or that will be really roughing it
Either that or some cold damp place in the dark of the forest, I'm not fussy :innocent:
I can bring my little self lighting camp stove and give a demonstration of how to light it using a fork and a BMW. Anyone got some fire retardant overalls they can lend me?

Alright... we have decided on a date
26th/27th February
I'll decide on a location tomorrow (after I've had a chance to check out Rerewhakaaitu), then I'll set up a calendar link.
In the meantime, the general plan goes something like this:
Pair up with someone else who is coming on the ride, making sure you have a cooker, and a pot/billy between you (3-ish litre billy should be big enough).
Decide on something to cook, or let me know your cooking abilities, and I'll send you a recipe with step-by-step instructions, and a shopping list (shopping lists will be compiled from ingredients available at Countdown or Pak n Save in Rotorua, so should be widely available).
We'll do a cruisy ride on the Saturday, starting from Clint's place and taking in some of the gravel in the area (and maybe a cafe), arriving at the campsite mid-afternoon ish.
Then we spend the evening relaxing, and cooking a delicious and adventurous pot luck/buffet dinner.
That looks like fun

I'm having trouble operating the calendar  so I'll try again tomorrow.
We have decided on the Mangamate waterfall campsite, near Minginui village, just off SH38 to Waikaremoana. The road to the campsite is sealed, but the driveway to the campsite itself is gravel, so it should be suitable for those with less hardcore adventure bikes.
The trip is more about the camping and cooking than the ride, but we'll do a cruisy gravel road ride on Saturday for anyone who is interested. I may be able to talk Clint into leading an expert loop through some of the sandy trails behind lake Rotoma, for anyone that wants a more challenging alternative to cruisy gravel roads. You are welcome to make your own way to Mangamate, by whatever adventurous means you see fit (as long as it doesn't involve a 4 wheeled support vehicle :oi-grr:)

Would you consider switching dates, or just doing it anyway?

I'm not sure what I'll do. We don't really want to bring the date forward, in case Clint's bike isn't back together.
Weekends in March are filling up fast (although there may be one left, I'm not sure), otherwise we are looking at April, which is starting to get a bit dark/chilly for camping.
I'll consult with Clint (and his diary) and see what our alternative date situation is like.
