I liked the shaft on my GS850 because I didn't have to oil or adjust it.
But that's also a VERY good reason. :puke:

no different to idiot back yard mechanics running sand paper under a fan belt to stop it squeaking, or sticking your finger in a hole to align shims (makes me shiver just thinking about that one), or using a 3000psi brake press without the safety guard (how many brake press opearators have missing fingers?).

Alright, we might loose out in HP with our driveshaft but it is a lot easier to maintain plus save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ over the years. :ride:

He chose shaft drive because even though the power loss was 12% it was constant and reliable. According to his documented calculations a chain in perfect condition & adjustment looses just on 8% but goes up to 20% when worked hard & therefore loose. A worn one would probably consume more power. So he argues that the shaft was the better solution in the long run. As for belt drive... have you heard the tales of woe from Harley owners with rock chip holes in their belts, get one on the edge and it's goodbye 400 smackers! And that's progress??? :motu:
