View Full Version : What bike for Mom?
Mom

So, it appears that the time has come. I want to upgrade my wheels. Much as I love The BB, I have served my time on her and I need something much more reliable.
I have a new job that involves a bit of a commute, with the current cost of petrol I can not see myself driving the car back and forward for very long. One tiny, weeny problem though...
I am a short arse  I dont have a HUGE amount of money to spend and I want something reliable that has a bit of spark. I know we have talked about this before but fresh eyes and all that. The BB has a seat height of 780mm, and is 600ccs of raw powa
I am not a cruiser rider, nor a sport bike rider so I am looking for something in between. Has anyone seen anything recently that might fit the bill? I dont want a little bike, I could not think of anything worse, I want to travel on this bike not just commute. All my riding is open road stuff with a little bit of traffic to contend with from time to time.

Yeah I will do Italian, but warn you I have tried a couple of Ducs out for size and they are too big. Engine type not so important, would adore a triple, BB is IL4 so wide as, she is about as big as I would consider height and width wise. I would actually prefer to be a little lower to the ground. Engine capacity is not important, though I dont want to be riding some sluggish dog of a thing, I need something with a bit of go. The Hornet is a nice bike, not the 900 I cant touch the ground on them :pinch:

You'd be about the same hight as Mrs Mully and she can touch the ground.
If she was a more experieced rider, we'd keep it for her.
One problem with the RF though - it starts. I know you're not used to that.....

According to the Google (I should be peeling wallpaper, not interneting, if I go out the door I'm in trouble) - it's 805mm.
It's well shaped though - Mrs Mully is 162cm and has severe short-leg syndrome - you're welcome to at least have a sit on it and see what you think.

GSX1200, I'm 5'5" with very short legs and I can almost flat foot it. Low center of gravity makes it easy to throw around, even at walking pace (or slower). Even better, mine is for sale.

There is one motorcycle manufacturer that has always made bikes specifically for short people...they make a low version of one of their standard bikes. But of course you would never consider a bike from those who have gone out of their way to consider short people should be able to ride.

I'm not an experienced rider so I feel qualified to recommend my bike (not my one I love her and will be buried with her [oops probably a bit too revealing])
I commute and she is easy on the clutch and brakes for stacked up traffic but loose and free for the open road (just did >5Km in the south Island)
It's not a sexy bike but it has lived up to all of the reviews I read before buying it.

I think you'd find the T-100 will work for you, and the SE is a bit lower in the saddle, too.
I did a trip to the Burt Munro last year with some friends, one of 'em on a T-100 and it went extremely well - very comfortable and heaps of power.
If you can handle a retro 250, the Kawasaki Estrella is an interesting option. I used mine for the trip to Invercargill and it went surprisingly well, albeit with only 20 HP on tap, it's a bit underpowered. It's a great bike for 'round town and day trips (I did the Coast-to-Coast in 2009 on it, no problem)
I'm toying with the idea of selling mine (as the Shadow has fast become the main bike), so PM me if you're interested in having a look.

Trudes bike would be a great buy, Im sure it had more done to it than just being lowered?
A standard 02'cb600 (new ones are a bit tall) was tried on for size a few months ago and was a perfect fit, needed a bit of work done on it though.

My current bike is only about 20 kgs lighter than Maha's CB1300 so I am used to cranking a bit of weight off the side stand. Newer bikers are much better weighted than mine is so I am not picking weight will be an issue. I got on a Nightrod at AMPS a couple of years ago, it just popped off the stand into my hands I was amazed.

Honda Bros...basically the big brother of Zac's Spada...older bikes now, but still some good ones around.

Pretty sure that's the one. YT sat on one locally awhile ago. We both remember it as being very small (esp for a 1200). In fact, it didn't seem any bigger that the Radian, but it was way better balanced, so weight wasn't an issue.

I'm not selling mine but you would be most welcome to have a blat on my bandit if you'd like just for a feel (oooo, and I don't say that to everyone  ). The seat height is 770mm and the only thing I could say against it is that it's heavy. However, at 5'1" I find it a really comfortable bike to ride so the offer is there for you to try it.

On the first page Kave posted his, its for sale. He came here prior to buying the 1200 to seat check the CB, as he was looking to buy one. Ended up with the 1200 because of his shortish legs so, could be an option.

As far as I can tell, the GSX1200y has a seat height that is between 5mm and 10mm lower than the GSX750, depending on the year. I tried the XJR1200 which was a bit taller, and felt more sluggish to turn. The CB1300 was a really nice bike but was far too tall for me.
Another short person bike is the SZR660 http://www.redbaron.co.nz/details.asp?vehicle_id=1214165 which I really considered when I got my current bike. Its a really low and narrow but comfortable seat. A really fun and flickable bike.

Suspension courtesy of Dr Rob and seat I believe, was it. I'm sure Mom is already aware, but don't just check seat heights. The width of the seat (possibly tank as well) can also dictate how easy it is for the uh... vertically challenged (shortarses).
A taller seat, but narrower may well be easier than a shorter seat that's wider (not huge differences in measurements for height, obviously).

i havent read this whole thread, but going from your first couple of posts, i reckon a street triple would be right up your alley. theyre not a touring bike and theyre not a full sport bike, but sorta sit in the middle and give you the best of both worlds. all my sport bike rider friends raved about the comfortable seating position after riding mine. the other plus is theyre a light bike (like 160kg dry i think) and the seat is fairly low so should be well manageable even for a shorter rider

This bike started out asking $10K...once a Wellington friend gave us a very detailed appraisal, the words..'or near offer' were added. Two offers have now been made. The second offer was a very reasonable 'or near offer' offer.
She said no, and now the price has changed yet again to $11500 or near offer.
Question is....is this within the trademe rules?...its not an auction, just a listing.

Those things went out the door just under $14k new after the "disaster".
So take 20% off for just rolling it out the door, 10% for each year and 5% per 10,000kms traveled and then you've still got an inflated price compared to most 2nd hand markets around the world.

Have you had the opertunity to actually ride one mom?
I'm not in any way saying don't buy one just that you might wanna have a bit of a blast on one first.
I was lucky enough to get a decent squirt on blackbuels bike and it was fantastic from my POV
it felt like my wrists were connected directly to the front axle the steering was that precise and torque for africa. a VERY sporty bike what I diddn't like was the feeling I had to short shift (change at 4500) but I guess you just ride to suit.

I have received this terse response for the seller;
"You didnot hear back from me as I have had Internet issues.
I was prepared to honour the original price for those who entered negotiations with me prior to the price increase. Seeking clarification from me and not jumping to conclusions here would have been key.
Perhaps offering your best price upfront would have resulted in you getting the sale."
I have gone back with;
Just to clarify something here, I made you two offers which you turned down, ie we were negotiating before you put the price up. I am prepared to pay you $10K for the bike. Still interested?

I wouldn't bother opening any more of her emails frankly. I'd also blacklist her, I can't be bothered with fuckers on trademe anymore. Do a straight up deal or fuck off. Even when I'm just browsing if I see some loser trashing a bunch of people's feedback or something, I'll blacklist 'em in case one day they have for sale something I might be tempted by, or converesly I have for sale something they might want to mess around with.
The other thing that bugs me about a lot of these auctions "seller overseas" or "heading off overseas and need the money" posts.
WTF?
Why should I care, how does that make your item any more desireable, or justify the fact you ask top dollar?
If a week later it all turns to shit, you've already fucked off overseas and I have no recourse.
Fuck you.
Fuck off overseas, and if you left it too late to sell your shit, then best drop your price for a quick sale, or pay to store your pile of shit.

Do eet! I have no patience for people who dick around on the sale of a vehicle. Either you're prepared to meet the market or your not and I really don't care if you're not but don't waste my time when I could be looking elsewhere!
The triples can be lowered quite easily too from what I understand - I rode a lowered one from Holeshot back when I was first looking to upgrade from the GPX.
Barrel of laughs it was and I had two flat feet on the ground(!) the only thing that stopped me buying one was the pricetag and at the time a lack of a second hand market.

Only, I just can't see it being a big deal to change one. Seat mod's maybe cost $300, shock shortened? if so there's another couple of hundred. Even if all the changes cost a couple of grand, (and they wouldn't) you can find plenty of tidy XB12S's for well under $8k.

+1 and a customised bike is likely to be more what you want than anything off the shelf! Also, careful with lowering kits, they change a lot more than the ride height if they aren't done properly. You can tell the proper one cos they are gold and say ohlins on em ;)

I wasn't suggesting she used an aftermarket kit, unless it's geometrically and qualititively the same as the OE part variations for the "CG".
There's no linkage, so changes in velocity ratios caused by dog-bone changes aren't going to be a concern. Just get a quality shock with the correct, (shorter) eye -to-eye length fitted, see your favourite suspension dude to change spring rates up front and lift the forks a tad and organise a trip to Tauranga to get the seat scuptured to Mom-arse specifications. Done.
Unless there's something else different, like a swingarm shock mount. Bet there isn't.

Some of us fit fuck all standard bikes. Others have firm ideas about what they want in a bike, and while they might not find exactly what they want they have the wherewithall to reshape the bike rather than put up with second best.
Humans tend to shape their environment rather than live twisted. Try it, write down 50 specific variables you want in a bike. Unless you're either very lucky or just prone to well targeted advertising you won't find a bike that meets all 50 points. So why wouldn't you take one of the closer flavours and make it right?

WTF is up with these Buell owners thinking their bikes are worth a million dollars. They went out the door at around $13-$14k after Black October.
Take 20% off for riding it out the door. 10% a year and 10% per 10,000kms. That gives us a value of $6626 for this particular bike assuming the upper figure of $14000 new.
BTW, just because you paid $18000 for your one new, doesn't mean you get to start there. Second hand prices are affected by end-of-life discount or any other discounting that the manufacturer, distributor, or dealer applies to the same model of bike during its particular model run. This is why I won't buy new Suzukis.
NZ has notoriously expensive second hand bikes, so we'll say $8000 market value for the bike in the TradeMe advert. Not $11000.

This is why I won't buy new Suzukis.
NZ has notoriously expensive second hand bikes, so we'll say $8000 market value for the bike in the TradeMe advert. Not $11000.
New Suzukis tend to be the same as old Suzukis, and they're cheap enough to start with. With Buells there's an exclusivity factor, particularly wrt the low production number Buells that holds their price up. They also seem to be the dream bike for a lot of people, if and when they can afford one.
Neither of which interests me. However, here's the rub: even before the prices were cut they were bloody good value for money. I paid bugger all under the fire-sale price for my latest one and that's easy to justify if you compare similarly spec'd alternatives.
So I'd say your pricing rationale is a tad out, but your price on that CG is about right. If their intention were genuinely to sell the bike they'd be asking $9k - $10k to get $8k - $9k. I'd quite like your ideas to catch on, though. I like the idea of ongoing cheap-as-chips Buells.

That is probably the reason for the price hike in the previous contender.
Started at $10K because she wanted $10k.
Probably not alot of interest above 8-9K so the price was increased to $11.5K ono because, she wanted $10K.
Ok we get it, she wants $10k...and would probably have got that had she been more accomodating to the top bidder. I am a firm believer that a bike is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Probably priced it based on that other auction.
Most people check tardme for the same model "to get an idea of market value" before posting their bike.
Was probably like "ooh if they get that for that bike, then mine must be worth $11k, maybe I should sell then I can afford an xyzabc"

May or may not happen, buyer has not seen the latest offering.

Yeah I guess, theres a 2010 Z1000 on TM for $14.5K which is way below current market value, that would be a great buy.

Not the right bike for Mom though but still good buying.
The SR4 that was posted earlier at under $10K is also very good buying.

Just checked the listing for that Buell because it was due to finish today, I wanted to see if had sold, but no, the listing has been extended until the 7th. Leads me to beleive that the seller has great expectations for a bike that is well over priced.
Should have taken the best offer which is normally, the best offer.
Guessing she may end up owning it for a while yet.

She did say that there were several others who were interested but obviously neither of those several met Annes offer......surely?
Or could it be shes holding out for the best best best best offer?
I know for a fact she will take not less than $10K.
I will keep it my watchlist incase in comes down to...'offers'.

That cherry bomb CG up Hastings way still there? *looks*
Ah yes. That'll be there a while at that price too.
If you can afford to wait let them both know there's a standing offer of $8.5k. One of 'em will see sense sooner or later.
