Computer geeks who play driving games are more likely to crash on a real-life road, a study says.

It found that motorists who play games such as Need for Speed and Gran Turismo are also 44 per cent more likely to take risks on the roads such as running a red light, and are less successful at carrying out everyday manoeuvres.

What about GTA? :innocent:
I just watched a Top Gear where Clarkson first did Laguna Seca in a Honda NSX on GT and then in real life. He basically concluded the experiences had very little in common. People who think their awesome driving skills in a game translate to the real world are deluded. They probably also think if you crash in real life, you can just start over

Is there allowance in the statistics that allow for the fact that most gamers are 15-24 year old pimply, backwards cap wearing guys? Sorry to anyone here that is offended by or fits that stereotype :corn:

Why stop at driving games ... war games/shooting games have similar effects in the minds of some ...

Reality to some ... does not exist ...

Yeah... then I guess so.

I remember, many years ago a boy killed his brother (tied to a chair and stuff) by practicing Mortal Kombat moves on him.

Games do affect driving. I had my own experience of this about 30 years ago. I had been playing my semi-regular session of 'Space Invaders' at a shop for about half an hour. I played a lot and after a while you get into a rhythm sweeping left and right, taking out the baddies. After my session finished I hopped on the bike and headed home without really focusing on the job at hand. After a few blocks I woke up and realised I'd been sweeping left and right between the cars in the two lanes going my way in exactly the same way as I had on my game. It was a real wake up call to concentrate when I hop on the bike.

That's what boys everywhere believe.

Luckily for the rest of us boys aren't the makers'n'shakers of this world.

Yep I'm a self confessed gamer, wasted squillions of hours on games of all types. When I started racing motorcyles, all those hours spent gaming was of no benefit at all on a real racetrack. I may have known a few more things but nothing the uninformed couldn't pick up in 2 secs.

Before joining the Army I also spent an unhealthy amount of time playing FPS games (war/shooters like Quake,Counter-Strike, Battlefield etc) and kicked ass. This false sense of grandeur was also worthless preparation for the real thing.

I remember playing paintball for the first time. First two games our team kicked arse. Then I got shot at close range in the third.

It fucken hurt. :shit: Played much smarter after that...

So, if I play Gran Turismo, for arguments sake, I'll be a worse driver.

Ok, following that logic then, I do play Zombie Bloodbath Masacre III every night and can state without contradiction that I have never killed a zombie for real.

Its bollocks really.

22 per cent of gamers stopped by police (non-gamers 13pc)
30 per cent have made an accident claim (15pc)
31 per cent have run a red light in past 12 months (14pc)
44 per cent take risks, accelerate too quickly, and overtake (21pc)
45 per cent Suffer road rage (22pc)

Does gaming make you a more honest person?
Are gamers competitive? so much so they would lie to make it sound like they have done more than they have in real life?
Would non-gamers make it sound like they are saint drivers?
Would non-gamers be more/less observant about what they do on the road? (we all recall the granny that calmly drives through a red light on the way to bingo)

Basically take any 'survey' results with a grain of salt. They are not facts and figures. If you say that only 20% of the people in the surveyed lied...

2-40% per cent of gamers stopped by police (non-gamers 0-33pc)
10-40 per cent have made an accident claim (0-35pc)
11-51 per cent have run a red light in past 12 months (0-34pc)
24-64 per cent take risks, accelerate too quickly, and overtake (1-41pc)
25-65 per cent Suffer road rage (2-40pc)

Suddenly the figures overlap themselves, and that is being gentle about how many people lied on a "continental tyres" survey.

Survey Stats != facts......EVER

It's interesting that the US forces are investing serious $$$'s in setting up extremely realistic "video games" that troops are put through. The results in Iraq & Afganistan have been very positive.
Using veterans input to make things as realistic as possible, has been saving lives.
