Someone please tell me that looting is a separate, more serious offensive than just straight burglary. That these fuckers will have their names, addresses and photos published, before been given a public flogging, instead of the usual slap on the wrist they normally get.
Did any of the looters from the last earthquake get caught, and did they get a decent sentence?

There's no doubt that the justice outcome will be pathetic. Their lawyers will no doubt claim that they were acting out of character when under extreme stress, blah, blah...
I don't agree with extreme vigilante justice, but I do hope for the maximum level of naming and shaming - names and photos published widely, perhaps bring back a form of the public stocks.

There's a National State of Emergency at the moment, not to mention the State of Emergency in Christchurch itself. Usually looters are dealt with more severely in those cases. Although we are talking about NZ's pathetically PC Justice (yeah whatever) System.
Maybe people should volunteer to go down there and form Neighbourhood Watch type groups to look after shit for those whose homes etc got trashed. Guard against thieving shitbags.

A man accused of looting a house that had been damaged and left abandoned in last weekend's earthquake says he is not worried about the punishment that will be handed down, but is concerned about what people are saying about him.

Usually, in a state of emergency, looters can be shot on sight. Too fucking easy as far as I am concerned. Name them, shame them then throw them to those poor people who spent a night in Hagley Park while their houses were being robbed.
But, as so rightly said elsewhere, it will be because of the 'stress' of the quake. Bullshit, these people are scum. Yep, make looting an offence with tougher sentances (knowing our fucking PC poliies, a tougher offence will be a slap with a dry bus ticket...oh hang on....risk of paper cut, make it slightly damp then)

As an ex-firefighter I am increasingly frustrated that my skills and experience aren't needed in Christchurch, as a Human being I will happily offer my services to be part of the firing squad to eliminate this filth from our society.
From yesterdays footage, the TV just showed pictures of a young boy and girl holding each other and waiting outside a building that they believed their solo Mom was trapped in. Presumably recognized from the footage and info, the bastard thieves took the opportunity to ransack the kids home whilst they were busy crying their eyes out waiting for their Mom.....May they rot in Hell for their lack of human decency!

It's not vigilante justice. In most "western" countries (except for most of those European sweety, darling countries) operating under emergency or martial administration, looters are shot on sight. Also on site, for those of you still spelling impaired, so that the meaning and usage of the two words can be made clear. Any of you not getting it are probably potential looters anyway.
There's nothing vigilante about military or Police personnel shooting looters. In most countries where skirts haven't completely supplanted trousers in Government that is.

It's greed pure and simple. They are not stealing for need as they are provided for with food, water and shelter. Even skanked up junkies will know how wrong this is.
Name, photgraphs, place of work (haha) address, family etc and shame. Posters outside their homes detailing their crimes.

Catch them, name and shame them and make sure they never work in this country again. But I know that if I were in their shoes, I would steal whatever I required to survive or whatever I required to help others.
However I would expect to be punished accordingly if I were caught with a generator etc even if it was boiling drinking water for the neighborhood.

Looting is not burglary. Looting is when you steal stuff that will have no effect on your immediate survival. If you step out of a house carrying someone's jewelry box at 4am, at an address you're never lived at, that's looting. Bang.

BS you don't need a geny to survive, you might need one for your p lab or hydro op. And when you steal one from a Telco you compromise their 111 service and the rescue op comms, why do you think the telco put the geny there in the 1st place.

Earthquake looting accused in court (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10708665).
Two men arrested for allegedly stealing emergency power generators in earthquake-struck Christchurch have appeared in court.
The two men - 23-year-old Owen Anthony Jackson, a fisherman and Jed Wilson-Calver, 22, unemployed - were last night arrested after allegedly stealing three $6000 emergency power generators.
The generators, donated by TelstraClear, were being used to power roadside cabinets fed up to 500 landline and broadband customers.
Both were denied bail and remanded in custody to reappear on March 28.
Detective Superintendent Peter Read said the thefts were "disgraceful".
"When everyone's hurting, they don't actually need this extra aggravation from these people.
"It's not only insulting to the Canterbury public of which they're supposed to be a part of, but it is hindering recovery operations and emergency services."
The two skin-headed men waved offensive hand gestures at photographers and court staff and media present in a makeshift courtroom at the Christchurch Police Station.
Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said they would rather be focusing on finding the missing and supporting the injured and homeless but police will take a hard line against thefts, looting and profiteering.
Meanwhile, at a media conference Superintendent Dave Cliff tsaid police patrols were being ramped up to stop scammers, burglars and disorderly drunks plaguing the streets of Christchurch.
"Sadly on a general policing front we're still continuing to see disorder. Drunk disorder in particular. We're still arresting burglars. Call police if you're seeing anything."
Many criminals had been crossing police cordons and pretending to be earthquake relief officials, he says.

a looter was caught red handed by police stealing a pearl drum set from a music store in Blenheim Road in the early hours of this morning.
The thief had smashed the front window to gain entry. Police caught and arrested a man 15 metres from the store.
But they haven't yet named him.

So Jed Wilson-Calver has always been a cunt, and Owen Anthony Jackson is one too.
From stuff:
The two men lifted their middle fingers to the courtroom as they were led back to the cells.
They lifted their finger to everyone in Christchurch. Cunts.

NZ Herald 12 Sept 2010 - Oh and just in "rememberance" of the last lot of looters FYI....
Kyle Paul McEntee, 28, Kimioa Ngatamariki, 28, Daniel Ezekial Peneha, 28, Timothy Brian Hurst, Deon Mathew Rich, 17, Dylan John Palmer, 17, William Johnson, 19, and Jack Duckmanton, 20.
One of those fuckers lives here at the Wigram Lodge, he is on remand pending court action. A vacant brained idiot , a dope smoker, a definate bludger. If it was not for the fact that we would loose our own freedom, many here would enjoy kicking the fuck out of him. He has been heard in the past three days boasting about wanting to go into town to "gather the spoils". That there is "lots of money to be made from the easy entry to building" I shake my head in disbelief at where his mind travels.
As much as we would all like to deal severly to these people, why lower ourselves to their level and become something not much different than what they are. Scum.
It better for us to stand stright and truthfull with our fellow men, helping those who are victims allowing the justice system deal to them, even though we know it is a weak system, its all we have.

BS you don't need a geny to survive, you might need one for your p lab or hydro op. And when you steal one from a Telco you compromise their 111 service and the rescue op comms, why do you think the telco put the geny there in the 1st place.
Or to boil water to drink.
Selfish yes.
But you would be surprised what people will do to survive.
However that being said - looks like they are scumbags who simply saw an opportunity.
Every now and then I like to think of people a being nice. Turns out we are all scumbags whom either want to steal stuff, or shot the people stealing.
Shame their isn't a middle ground anymore.

Fire works to boil water, like what is being used by the folks from Sumner camping on the hill. Need verses want. Survival verses selfishness.
Where they stole them from indicated they weren't thinking of anyone but themselves and it was no surprise they were scumbags from way back.
There are decent people, they are out clearing streets and helping others.

I had a 1 minute conversation with him, he sounded shot (mentally). Sent a txt later that night that simply said "Saving more than we are losing".
Made me feel selfish to want to drag him away from saving people. But I do worry about him.
So I will avoid this thread from now on. For I know he will be doing EVERYTHING in his power to save more and that is all that counts. Whether it goes against morals, or law - he will do what he can so they live. I respect him for that.

Agreed, although somehow when the populace are prevented from taking even the most basic of precautions to secure their stuff this makes it a lot worse.
i.e. in normal times: "you didn't bother to lock your garage and you got burgled - that was pretty silly"
in disaster mode: "Your garage door is buckled up to shit, and you haven't been allowed back to your house and it's been burgled - cunts"

Why is it that a couple of these looting cunts felt far more intimidated by the aussie cops than they would our own fine law enforcement community?
Yet, when I have been in Aus I have found the cops there to be far more approachable, even by a couple of drunkards looking for a good meal and a drink nearby?
