View Full Version : Is it just me or are there a lot of flies around this summer?

They seem to be getting everywhere! Pricks! Even more now after last weeks shaking.

Does anyone use those automatic spray things that hang on a wall? I've tried almost all the brands of fly spray on the shelves at the local supermarket but none of them work. It's like the flies can sense the stuff and just go and hide somewhere:mad:

What are you guys doing to keep them outta the house? Or do you just put up with them?

Also any ideas to keep them away while having a BBQ?

We have an automatic expra from Mitre 10 and it seems to do the trick quite well.
The can it came with was average at best but the refill can we bought sent em packing. not sure if they loose there effectiveness with age but the fresh can was great.
I think the placement of them is quite important too.

I have a couple of raid automatic dispensers (bought back when they were still Robocan). The refills seem to be the cheapest from M10. They've now got an outdoor model that fires upwards every 30 seconds. It seems to work pretty well unless it's breezy.

I find that with my trusty fly swat, if I kill any fly immediately after it comes inside, the lack of presence of flies and zero tolerance seems to keep others away.

No fly wants to be in hostile air space.

Dont leave pet food or rubbish and plates lying around.

Meaty smelling homes are magnets as are outside rubbish bins poorly sited, unsealed lids or heating the rubbish in the sun.

We use one of these:

http://www.pestrol.co.nz/shop/Pestrol+Insect+Control/Pestrol+Automatic+Indoor+Insect+Control.html

It seems to work - the flies remind us when the can has run out, and not longer after we replace it they disappear again.

Cool, cheers guys. I'll pick one up today.

We run a Raid and also a Mortein "robocan" thingy at each end of the house. One refill will last all summer and you can buy outdoor refills if you are having a bbq.

Mitre 10 has a "no brand" brand of refill available.

Have seen sod all of them this year apart from those who spread themselves on my visor.

Yeah ... this summer my visor gets covered in dead bug crap ... worse than usual ... after about 50ks I can't see any more ... and have to stop to clean it

I refuse to have anything in the house that automatically sprays chemicals into the air ... dunno what they are going to do to you ... the trusty fly swat comes in useful.

I wasn't too keen on having a "robo can" thing, but ended up getting one as the flies were so bad this year. They work really well, but you do have to wonder about the stuff that comes out of them...

Supposed to be natural pyrethrims or what ever they call that stuff.
I have them and they work pretty good.....struggling at the moment though...too many flies.

We had some, but sent them to CHCH to help with the cleanup down there, every little bit helps as they say :msn-wink:

Seriously though, the raid dispenser (robocan) thing seems to work pretty well:niceone:

I have a Mortein one. Seems to work pretty well. I only turn it on when the flies are about, so when they do come in they get a surprise.

Poison ivy is natural too doesn't mean it's good for you.

I have had to only swat around a dozen this year so far, previous summers maybe only 3-4 flies were swatted. When swatted immediately they really do get the message that you mean business, and the message seems to go out to the fly community, but you have to be consistent.

Bit like policing:msn-wink:

From that universal font of all knowledge, Wikipedia - "Pyrethrum was used for centuries as an insecticide ... The flowers should be dried and then crushed and mixed with water. It should be noted that though the pesticide is organic, it can still be harmful to humans."

Yup ... Cyanide is organic too ... .. and many mushrooms such as the Fly Agaric ... but no-one's going to eat them ...

"Organic" doesn't necessarily mean "good" ...

Thanks, that was what I was meaning by wondering about the stuff that comes out of them - just because its natural doesn't mean it is okay - but my brain couldn't find the words I wanted (I am off work, sick today)

been out of control here. Ive bought another auto fly spray widget and tried to get on top of the obvious outside attractants. Seem to have thinned out a little this week. Really hit a peak for those couple of very hot weeks we have had here in WElly

Flies lie dormant in the ground, hatch out when theuir time is right or they are disturbed. I used a really horrible, toxic powder to kill off fly larve places last year, it has reaped dividends! Carbryl is its name, powder usually used to kill wasps, works a treat on all the little holes in the dirt where these fuckers go to evolve.

Moving air stops them from flying around AS MUCH. wE USE CEILING FANS, Opps. Holding a can of spray in your hand, aimed at your legs also seems to slow them doen :pinch:

Spray your house with Ripcord Plus, works a treat. Should keep em away for at least 6-9 weeks. The company I work for makes the stuff so I am obviously biased. :msn-wink:

All natural pytethrums/synthetic pyrethroids are safe to humans but I wouldn't be going out of my way to breathe too much of the stuff in. Some people are more sensitive than others but a skin rash and/or increased UV sensitivity is about the worst side-effect.

The reason fly sprays seem to work poorly at times is heat increases insect metabolism so they somethimes shed the stuff before it has time to take full effect. There is also a "reported" increase in Synthetic Pyrethroid resistance in flys, which can make a lot of the older chemistry seem less effective than it was back in "the good old days".

Oh and yes there are a lot more flies around this year. Spoke to our insect man the other day and he said sales of all our insecticides are up around 30% this year.
