 I ran out of petrol on the way home tonight.
Half way up Ngauranga Gorge.
Cool I thought, I'll switch to reserve... Ah, no. It's on reserve. Bugger. Lay the bike down (it's the KLX) to get the gas across the tank.
A few things I'd like to point out:
1. Laying the bike down gives you 200 metres of gas.
2. I can get 145 kms to dry after caning the bike on the motorway every day.
3. The KLX is very good at getting every last drop out of the tank.
4. Ngauranga Gorge is fuckin' steep.
5. Newlands BP is a long way from the turn off, and it's steep too.
6. I should join a gym.

Did you leave the bike then and there to walk 1km to the petrol station for 1/2 litre of petrol?
Just a thought because that's much easier than pushing a bike uphill with all your gear on and having to carry your helmet somehow.
Your bike easy to push?
.
.
Better the KLX than the big one to push up that hill!

Yep, been there, done that.
Only I was riding an older CBR going home on the Southern Motorway.
I thought briefly of the old trick of tipping the bike over and instantly dismissed it because I would drop it.
So I made a phonecall and waited for my daughter to come with a cupful of any fuel she could find. The lawnmower fuel. That did the trick.
In the meantime I had a nice little conversation with a Highway Patrol Officer. He didn't find anything illegal (rego WOF), didn't ask for my license (must be a first) and didn't fine me.
By the way, these cops are getting younger every day!

Good effort! (Thought it would have been easier pushing it to the Shell in J'ville than the BP in Newlands.)

HAHA,
Sorry mate, but i had to have a laugh.
Well look at it this way....
Do that everyday, and it wont be soo bad. You will get very fit, and your engine wont need as much work as its only working half the time as before  .
Ive had that happen to me on a CBR600, UP PIEKOK HILL!!!(right in the middle too)
Was a shop bike, thought i could get to the next petrol station-NO!
Only got 160km's on the tank!! No cell phone coverage, no gas, and a hell of a long way to walk!
Luckily someone pulled over and gave me a lift to the gas station.
I know how you feel.

I saw you pull over and wondered what was going on. I was in the Newlands Bus heading up the hill and you changed lanes ahead of us and pulled over.

You poor sod. I had that happen many years ago on my XL175. Just outside the turn off to the meat processing plant. Sure is a long push up the hill.
Thanks, I don't feel such an idiot now.

Any bike can be very heavy to push.
My very first bike used to run out of gas at exactly 85 miles. I coasted into the service station forecourt a few times, and once had to push it across the road.
Never ran out of petrol on subsequent bikes, until I got the VFR750, which I ran bone dry a few times, luckily never more than half a km from a gas station, and every time in town, on the way to work. Trouble was, the fuel pump only worked when the engine was running :weird: so it took a while to get going. Once I ran out about 2km from work, coasted for a while, then pushed it, then gave up (hill to go up), and rang the AA. Had to wait about 45 minutes for them to bring some gas. Would've been quicker to abandon the bike, go to the gas station and return. Ah well....
I only ran dry on the VTR once, and that was because when the RLOD (RedLightOfDoom) was illuminated on the way to work, I went, "I'll fill up on the way home."
On the way home: "Meh... can't be bothered - I'll be right - I'll fill up in the morning."
In the morning: "I'll fill up at the BP on the way to work."
Running late, so: "I'll fill up at the Shell by work."
After work: "I think I can make it to the BP."
A third of the way there: running on one cylinder, then the other, then none, then both. Uh-oh... Turn around, get another 100m, then blahhhh...
Not even fumes left.

I pushed the bike - I was running late for something already and only had a few bucks on me (they charge for the can ). This wouldn't have happened otherwise eh?

Well you could have got out and helped push! Jeez...
Three bikers and one truck did stop to see if I was OK. I was fucked by the time the last one stopped.

Sorry mate, but I did it twice in two days on the new bucket. Luckily it was the small bike for me too!
Did you push it with your helmet on? I did, I had nowhere else to put my lid. It's gets pretty hot in all that gear!
See ya on the weekend hopefully (weather looks crap)
Dave.

I only ever run out of petrol once, about 19 years ago, and had to push it up a few hills to a petrol station. I learnt my lesson that day and it hasn't happened since.

You never know. You might be a quick(ish) learner.
After the first time I had to push the bike a ways, I made a firm vow never to do it again.
And I didn't.
At least, not till the next time it happened.

I've no story to share with regards to running out of petrol because I've never run out petrol aka former 'Venturer' Boy Scout.
Routinely never allow my bike (and car) to drop below 1/2 tank unless we're on a long distance trip. Good habit to have.
Takes a month of daily commuting to reach fillup point. Then I can play for another month "shall I tank today?" before hitting reserve. In theory reserve gives an additional half month but I've never gotten low enough to actually flick the switch.

Hard luck, Andrew. I'm proud to say I haven't even had the 636 on reserve, let alone pushed it anywhere. Ain't my idea of fun. But the FZR, did it a couple times.
I'd like to point out that if you happen to run out of gas at about the Ngauranga interchange, it's a real long way to BP Horokiwi, and it ain't that flat. And it's a REAL REAL REAL long way when you have no rego, no plate, and the wrong licence to ride that bike you're pushing too!!

Unfortunately for me, this would mean filling up every 45min (when riding on the open road)

Well I have run out of gas and it wasnt good to have it happen..
My bike was heavy to push.... lucky for me a dude in a ute (fellow biker) stopped and put in a few drops in the tank that would get me to the garage up the road.

If all you guys are expecting some story on Harley unreliability, huddle closer...........whisper whisper.
The truth is, we have to push them in the showroom. Starting them covers the clothes in carbon crap.
Ultras are the best, 340 kg's and when they get past 5 degrees of lean they take you with them.
