It's terrifying news. I'm watching the footage too. It breaks your heart to think of all they are about to go through. Thoughts are with Japan, may you all be safe, and find your loved ones.

Crazy times in the world at the moment.

News is saying it's 7.9, not 8.8. But they're not sure.

The pics they were showing were from a live webcam. You could see lots of shit moving left to right. A few minutes later it was all moving right to left. That was the tsunami pushing into the harbour in Senhai. I missed the bit where a ship hit the bridge.

It is an 8.8 - It was upgraded from 7.9 about 30 minutes ago. There was a 7.1 aftershock a little while ago too.

With tsunami's generated by land slides they're always larger in one direction. So hopefully the worst of it has already hit (assuming it was a land slide that did it)

dunno... if you take a look at the locations map on the USGS site (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Maps/10/140_40.php), it looks like they've been hammered on both sides of the fault, both sides of the fault looking like they're at very different depths... so not sure how that'll work. The TV just said if there's anything that's crossed the Pacific, it'll hit Honolulu by 2am our time...

This is terrible terrible news. I've spent a bit of time there, my daughter is half-Japanese and thankfully she and her mother are her in Christchurch. I didn't think I'd be saying that in a hurry, 'lucky to be here in ChCh'.

I read this article a few days after our 'quake in February, the author considers the possibility of that affecting Japan.

Man the earth is doing some crazy stuff at present.

I know a lot of people feel the same way but I'm not sure anything unusual is happening though. Have a look here at the US Geological Survey list of killer earthquakes for the last 110 years: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/world/world_deaths.php There are heaps of them.

Earthquakes are normal. Unpredictable and bloody awful. But normal. Especially for countries on the edges of tectonic plates like Japan and NZ.

The difference we have today is digital camera technology and the internet. Disasters are made real as they occur. Our parents heard about this stuff on the radio, with more detail in the newspaper after a few days.

The other point is that there are 6.7 billion people on the planet today, many living on coastlines. The effect of disasters is magnified by the human impact because there are so many more vulnerable people.

As I type, a geologist is saying on TV that there isn't anything remarkable about the current earthquake activity. The Pacific Plate is moving around a bit but that's what plates do.

No comfort to the people of Japan. Its numbing watching the footage. Words fail me and I can only hope people survive.

An ex DSIR scientist developed the first effective base isolation systems. The developed world took notice and have been using them ever since.

The DSIR was fragmented and it's funding dispersed. The IP for the base isolators was more or less given away.

You can't go around living in your own wee safety bubble... nothing will get done, you start to worry about every thing else...

The further inland the closer you get to the major fault line, or in the north volcano... further south the big freeze could happen... do I live on the hill where a slip could happen, or on flat that could be reclaimed land and liquify... Do go inland

So Ok lets move to Aussie well they have the same problems flooding, bush fires Tsunami's and cyclons... at the end of the day it doesn't matter where we try and live on this rock a natrual disaster could hit you...

The best thing you can do is just be prepaid have your emergency kit ready to bug out at short notice... wouldn't start worrying about things as if and I say if it happens nothing you can do about it...

11 kilometers apparently. That'll be up an estuary or river valley. Doubt damage has spread that far.

I heard some officials explaining that they'd told local coastal shipping to return to port. I sincerely hope they had more sense, the best place to be when a tsunami arrives is open ocean.

Their is only a little bit of footage for a huge coastline from the TV stations. I fear their is lot more amcam footage to come. The scale & destruction is unbelievable.

A mate called a couple of hours ago, he was watching the tide on the Rawhiti side of the Bay move from high to low & back again in 10 minutes. Did this 3 times in an hour. High tide here today was lower than a low tide.:shit:

It can, and does. But I think he meant the profiling rather than the actual elevations, some of the shots of the tsunami flow showed the clear affects of engineered teraforming.

Find it yourself, it's not an uncommon occurance. If you channel water down a ramp which has an upward slope at the end the water will follow the slope. Some gold mining sluices are designed that way, to drop heavy particles out. On a larger scale you probably saw it happen in the clips from Japan, the tsunami flow driving up and over a raised highway.

A lot of the land shown being inundated including the Nuclear Power station has been reclaimed from the sea so is basically at sea level.

Good to know you and your wife are safe. The scale of this disaster is incomprehensible. On the positive side the Japanese buildings have been impressively built with some even standing up to the tsunami. I believe Japan and NZ lead the world in earthquake construction. It makes homes expensive but I don't think any of us will argue about that.

After the 164 Kanto , Hanshin quake , NZ and Japan teamed up , I heard that the building code were dramatically improved after
Then again in 1980 after the Kobe eathquake

The CTV building surprised me, but then theres not a lot u can do if a big hole opens up

Totally agree, we simply get on with life and plan for futures but who knows what will really happen to any of us or all of us one day.

All we can do is do all we can to help others in need, any way we can. We never know when or if this will happen to us on a similar scale. What has hit Christchurch has hurt so many and will affect all of us living in NZ financially, emotionally or otherwise. What would we do if a disaster of the scale in Japan hit us?

I guess the best we can do is be prepared individually and prepare to help communally.

What this whole set of events does for me is re-ignite my faith in the goodness of the human spirit. We do get some hung up on shite, strung out by what is total bollocks...

Then you see those people on TV trying to hold their lives together in the face of further catastrophe, the unknown of possible further disaster. You see it in the faces of the children, its so heart breaking.

So fuck the petty bullshit in life, the aggro, the point scoring, the inuendo to get one over on each other, chasing a dollar, moaning about how bad the government is for overcharging us.

Then look at those people on TV....

The vast majority of people get it, it seems that bikers do as well (apart from a few) but opinions are opinions......

I think the majority of the world community thinks like that now....long may it remain so...I agree, the generation that fought WW1 is gone, and the generation that fought WW2 nearly so. My dad also fought in WW2, and the history of of the wars from 1914 to 1945 has always been an interest of mine. I've heard stories from those that were there and read plenty more. There was certainly some nasty stuff done by the Japs (and Germans) of the time and I believe they are rightly despised for it. BUT - that generation is nearly gone and make up a very small percentage of those still alive in Japan (or Germany) today. Most of those alive today were far too young at the time to have any involvement or were not even born at the time. The Japanese (and German) people of today should not be confused with those of 1937-45.

The pictures on TV show the ordinary people of Japan struggling to come to terms with what has happened. Just like the ordinary people of NZ on 22 Feb, and in a lot of cases here - still. My heart goes out to them and I wish them all the best.

Japan was occupied by the Americans after WWII. They were disarmed. The Japan we know today is a world away from the Japan of then. If you don't think Hiroshima and Nagasaki were punishment enough, I can't imagine what you think would be. I'm sorry your old man went through some horrible, awful stuff. The people who commit that kind of torture are completely reprehensible monsters. But these are normal, everyday PEOPLE who are being horribly effected by a disaster. Families, children. Not soldiers. And when you blast those people over there right now, you're blasting my family too. My brother, his wife, and my unborn niece. I'm worried sick about them right now.

Yeah - amen to that. After VE day my old man travelled overland with all his units gear from northern Italy back to Blighty and was told not to hurry so he took full advantage... What he saw in the fire bombed cities of Germany caused him troubles for many years and frankly I dont think he was overly happy about it at all.

I would never condem a veteran's view or opinion of an event but we have the luxury of taking a wider view. War's change people - they are terrible terrible things because of that and you would be horribly wrong if you thought that the behaviour of the Japanese then is anything like what they are now. Point to any ethnic group (even Kiwis) and you will find a fairly recent and nasty stain - its a part of the human condition and not unique to Japan. I'm afraid to say that on the inside we truely are all pretty well the same (ie dreadful)

Our job as human beings is to rise above that and to make sure we keep our capacity for hatred well in check.

I have many Japanese friends and I work for a Japanese company. I hope my friends are going to be OK but I'm sure they will attend diligently to their efforts to work through it all...
