View Full Version : Canterbury: Canterbury Sunday Winter Rides
gloplg
4th April 2011, 21:52
Anyway Peoples, interest has been expressed so here goes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ride will be held in conjunction with Flip's Classic Ride. At this stage the "Classic" is proposed to be on the first Sunday of the month with the "Sunday" ride on the other Sundays. Both rides are weather dependent and a cancellation will be posted on both threads on the day by 09.00.
As BK is not yet viable again, we will meet on the road outside Sydenham McDonalds on Hastings Street West. 11.00am for a 11.30 departure. When BK becomes viable again we will go back.
This is a social ride and an opportunity for a ride during the weekend. The destination will generally be a pub or café for lunch, a drink and a chat. The object is to have a good lunch and enjoy ourselves.
This is not a race from point A to point B. If you want to "see how fast you can go" then please just go somewhere else.
Learners are most welcome on these runs, just let Flip or me know who you are so we can assign a helper to ride with you at your pace.
Ideally the route will be the same as the WNR however depending on the weather and road conditions the destination will change as required bearing in mind the earthquake damage suffered by such a lot of our favourite spots.
Duvauchelles-Akaroa.
Oxford.
Greta valley.
Wets Route.
Okains Bay???
And anywhere else anybody can come up with.
The rules are the same as the WNR:
1. Rider Responsibility
It is the responsibility of each and every rider to ride safely and within their abilities. If any rider acts in a dangerous manner then they will be asked to leave. Remember, you not only put yourself at danger but also the other riders and the general public. If you do not understand this then do not come.
2. Rider Assistance
At the car park we’ll ask that riders who would like some one on one help will be asked to put their hands up and we’ll ask some of the more experienced riders to provide that help. Please don’t be shy. This is an excellent opportunity to ride with and learn from people who have many decades of riding under their belts.
3. Leader
The cruisy group will have a lead rider appointed each week. Obviously it will be someone with reasonable skill so as to not piss everyone off. The leader will stop at the pre-determined regroup points and wait for the entire group to arrive before departing. Please give the leader a little space. If they are not travelling fast enough for you then overtake them and leave the group. We will see you at our destination.
4. Tail End Charlie
A TEC will also be determined as a safety measure. No body will ever be left behind on these runs.
5. Rossi clones
If you wish to do your own thing then feel free, but please leave a bit earlier, before the rest of the group!! We'll see you at the pub (and we expect some beers waiting for us when we arive). There's nothing worse than someone trying to be Rossi and carving up the slower riders to get to the front. That's when accidents happen. Leave first, ride hard and do not place the other's at risk. If we find you in a ditch we will provide first aid until the ambulance arives, but do not expect any sympathy on the web afterwards. If we find you talking to Mr Plod we will take and post photos.
Disclaimer: Neither myself, nor any other participant is responsible for another rider's actions. Each rider is responsible for their own riding.
Most of this was copied from Pheonixgtr, thanks.

went over to akaroa on the weekend - bit of new seal yes, but was still a great ride. would imagine that by next weekend the seal will have bedded down nicely and be ok. was nice to ride the hill without a lot of traffic (no campervans) and still no grit on the hill

does anyone know if there is an open service station in Akaroa today?
( or do i need to take a spare fuel container to top up my 7l tank :( )

I would say yes. (in that it usually is open). If in doubt, phone them. Its a Shell station and the signage says "L'Essence" which is really lame.

i just took a extra tank anyway - as a bonus i now have a rough idea how many k's it can do on a tank post-tuneup (160 - up from 120... :) )

I was contemplating doing the Port Hills Loop. Halswell, Gebbies, round the bays, Evans through to Gebbies and lunch at the Wheatsheaf, or somewhere else if anyone prefers.
Meeting would be Sydenham Mackers, or BK Moorehouse. Will be looking at BK and the Summit road this afternoon to check viability.
Will post later.

Enjoyed the ride out to Hororata, although gravel riding with Continental Road Attacks isn't particularly fun on a newly graded road i must say, but safely negotiated.

After having suggested the Ashburton Wheels Week ride tomorrow (and looking forward to doing it) I won't be there. An old mate of mine who I have not seen for over 15 years is passing thru and stopping by at exactly the time the ride starts. After spending all afternoon cleaning the bike it will have to stay in the shed tomorrow. Which might not be a bad thing as the weather looks like it is going to be crap. If anyone does come thru, enjoy yourselves. Will catch up on one of your rides sometime soon.........If I am not mistaken this might be my 100th post. Do I get a medal? It has only taken me two years!!!! More of a reader than a writer me thinks:yes:

How did you manage that?? Have fun in Nelson
I swapped out my coil for a new one and the new one has reduced the spark to next to nothing. If my bike starts, it just floods itself whenever I reach 1/4 throttle.
Don't worry, put the old coil back in and rode the bike to Nelson and back no worries at all. I even bought a new bike while I was in Nelson, just have to get it back down here now:blink:

Check whether it's a 6 volt or 12 volt coil, if it's a 12volty running on 6 volts it could explain the lack of spark.

It sure is:yes:
How do I check what voltage it is? My bike runs 12v. Unless there is some kind of converter in there somewhere changing it to 6v before it gets to the coil.

If your bike has a 12volt battery I would assume your coil to be 12volt also

All you can really do is check the resistance, which maybe doesn't tell you much as they are pretty low anyway so an internal short often won't be obvious.
Easy enough to check the voltage to the coil, just stick your multimeter across it with the bike running.

Might pay to be careful putting a multimeter accross an active coil, all sorts of voltage spikes could happen.

Yeah man, sounds good, and so far the forecast for Saturday is looking good... Meet at BK?.. I have to run an errand around 10, so would meeting at 11:30 to leave at 12 suit?
Incidentally, if we do go for a ride, you mind if I borrow your chest mount harness for the gopro for 5-10min?.. I was considering getting one, but I want to see if it'll fit a fat bastard like myself, and what the angle is like on my bike.

Well, if it's a nice clear day and if people felt like a wee bit more dirt, could do above Little River on the other side of Lake Forsyth Here (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=-43.822267,172.798204&spn=0.053256,0.132093&t=h&z=14&lci=com.panoramio.all,com.google.webcams)
We can get to it by going over the beach at Birldings flat or via Little River itself.
Could be some great scenery if it's a nice day and not blowing a gale ... :)

I am vanning down in Gearldiene for Saturday night but I say the only bikes that will get across to Bossu Rd from Birdlings Flat by the beach need to be light and well knobblied in the tyre department to avoid a lot of pushing and pulling.
You should stop the group there while you take the DR350 across and back for a laugh (and it may well make it ok if you can keep the momentum up enough not to sink up to your axels in stones) and then everyone can head over via Little river.

I kinda remember that beach, I wasn't going to tell the road bikers about the stones until we got there :D
I was really, just thought it could be fun for any off roaders or gung ho roadies ...

You don't have to go across from Birdlings Flat, you can also turn right just as you get in to Little River and take Kinloch rd to get up there - a few of us went up that way back in February, although we took Jubilee rd down into Wainui, rather than continuing straight along Bossu, which was a mistake, as Jubilee is extremely steep, and although continuing along Bossu there is also a rather steep section, it's on the way up rather than down.
I took care of that errand today, so I can do any time on Saturday, so we can do meet at 11, leave at 11:30 like we normally do on Sunday rides, or whatever suits everyone best.

I thought the Ashley Forrest was generally all locked up but don't know for sure.
There are some roads I think run in to dead ends or locked gates I wouldn't mind going to the end for a look.
The Lees Valley kind of touches on the edge of the Ashley and the road in from Amberley to Lake Janet runs into the Ashley Forrest and is open at times but not always. That has a locked gate a bit past Lake Janet.
Again the whole topic would be better placed in the Adventure Forum where those in the know might see it.
I have a bit of free time over the next month or so but can't really afford to fill the gas tank too often in that time.

Yep all good here, wife and kids accounted for. I was in my garage when they both hit putting together some shelfing and had to run out and hold onto the bike twice, for the fear of it falling over as the drive is a pea gravel.

The Lees Valley kind of touches on the edge of the Ashley and the road in from Amberley to Lake Janet runs into the Ashley Forrest and is open at times but not always. That has a locked gate a bit past Lake Janet.
That sounds good! Have you been up the Lees Valley much? Sounds like it could be fun.
I also still haven't explored the hills above Little River! I'll get there one day.
On Sunday Transalper came round and helped me pull the back wheel off the DR and change sprockets etc. I have 2 back rims and was getting one set for the new dirt tyre (all on now with rim lock) and getting the other rim ready for the old tyre and will become the road wheel.
TA jokingly said "Are you sure you want to leave the bike jacked up like this with no back wheel?" as it was balancing on its paddock stand.
I said "No worries, the shaking seems to be dying out now, haven't had a good one for ages!"
Lo and behold!
All the bikes stayed up including the DR. Just. The left fork was only holding on to the stand by about 3mm. If it had come off that side it would have fallen on the Katana. That was my biggest fear. Whew!

Good to hear, given how close you are to the epicenter it really seems to stretch the realms of probability a bit that none of your bikes went over in this or the February quake, particularly if you had the DR up on a paddock stand at the time, so I'd seriously consider picking up a lotto ticket or two if I was you.
How did your guitars and basses fare?.. I've taken to keeping my guitars in slightly more earthquake-friendly positions so they can't fall and nothing can fall on them, but I've only got a pair of cheap ones, I imagine that with a more extensive collection of nicer ones your collection must be a tad more nerve-wracking.
Also I hope there was no further damage to your house?.. Had you had the rest of the brick cladding pulled down and the weatherboard put up yet, or were you still waiting on EQC/whoever?

I've been there quite a few (or a lot) times, it is a nice ride with a few small 'almost challenges'. It will be a good warm up for cooneyr's CCC loop that's in the pipeline for the not to distant future.
So Lees Valley when??

I think a lotto ticket or two is a good idea tho I must remember to win this time ...
I was very, very relieved when I opened the door of the garage to see them all patiently waiting for me ...
Instruments were all fine again too, thankfully. I mainly have cheap ones too but still, can't afford to replace them! Most of them are under the bed still from the first quake, the precious ones anyhoo.
House is all good, one cracked window (two cracked occupants!) and the fireplace, which is stone, finally came down right into the cat food :) Luckily she was sleeping on the couch at the time ...

CCC loop? Sounds interesting. If he's planning it, it'll be fun, where's it go?
As for lees valley, I'm keen for any time. Busy this Sun, maybe weekend of the 26th? Either Sat or Sun is fine with me, maybe depends on weather? Would give Gareth a good chance to stretch his legs on the KLR ...
Or should we leave it 'till after the trail ride on the 3rd? Would give us more time to put it up on the adventure thread and maybe round up a few extra troops.
Would also mean I don't have to change my rear wheel again either ;)
Transalper
16th June 2011, 09:54
mmm, bit tricky... leaving it until after the Trailride would mean you have more front tyre to work with on the Trail ride and that will be important on this one.
Will keep an eye on the river level but even an in and out trip will be good.
If we wait too long the river is likely to rise or the snow may come which can make it impassable.
CCC loop is a slightly less regular ride we do, it Leaves Christchurch (the first C) goes up to Motunau then hits shingle and dirt with a short patch of downhill mud on the way to Gore Bay then out to Cheviot (the second C). Then crosses another un maintained clay road and comes out in Culverden (the third C) and down via Ram Paddock road to pass slightly inland behind Amberley and finally back on to seal road for the home stretch.
Do a search you'll find a thread or two on the ride and at least one youtube video of bits of it by ryan... (here on youtube). (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU4mL29TCOM)

We'll learn to live without evan's pass, truth be , it's needed serious money spent for years, but as it's only classed as a secondary route , would never get it, be even further down the scale now.

We dragged a 100 tonne LPG storage tank over that road a couple of years ago. I can't think how you could do it otherwise as we would not be able to swing them around the stop sign corner at governess bay. Cut them in half next time I guess.

I actually think I ride better and thus safer on bigger bikes/bikes with more power.
There's nothing so frustrating and a little daunting as needing to lighten the front wheel, on the dirt bike for example, twisting the throttle and having nothing happen.
Ditto needing to make the rear wheel bite down to give you some more control in some twisties ...

Hi all,
Hope you guys are doing well, all things considered.
I have been M.I.A for the last few months because my bike stopped going and well... it just sat in the garage not working for long time.
She was picked up and is now all good apparently so I'm picking her up on Saturday and am keen for a ride with you boys and girls if you will let me :innocent:. What's the cover charge these days? Basket of chips?
Where is the ride going? (maybe it's explained on page one of this thread but I only thought to check that just now)
I will hopefully see you people on Sunday if the weather holds up.
It's fair to say I'm chomping at the bit to go for a ride again after not being on a bike for 3 or 4 months.
Peace.

I think it's fair to say that we had wondered what had happened to you. Good to hear you are ok and back to riding again.
I'm working weekends now so will not be riding with you. There seems to be a vacancy for an organiser for the SunRide. Any takers?????????
Less than 3 months to daylight saving and WNR!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I'm keen for a ride if the weather is not to ugly tomorrow morning, have no idea where I want to go though, so is anyone else keen for a ride and to meet at BK at 11am?

Nice! Just waiting for it to buffer a bit before I start watching.
Turns out that it will be quicker for me to download it and then watch it. Youtube is doing some crazy shit!
