What does it cost to drag to a degauss clinic and what is is worth.
My Dad used to do degaussing, sounds like what it needs

TVs are one of the many electronics that depreciate very quickly. By the time that you get it all up and running, it may not be worth it. I'd say just get a new one. Apparently 32" LCDs are around $800. Kind of a shame really. We bought our 32" new for $1400 a few years back. :innocent:

Apply a shotgun to the screen and enjoy the rest of your life.

Discolouration at the edges of a CRT screen can sometimes be all but eliminated by a bit of tweaking on the colour and contrast controls.
Most people seems to have the colours and contrast set way too high - some seem to like to see a world with day-glow green grass, and people with screaming pink skin. I hate it.
Tweaking the colours may not fix the problem, but may make it much less apparent.

If colour tv tubes are the same (in construction) as crt PC monitors tubes, there is a degaussing coil around the outside of the tube, near the face. It operates when the tube is powered on (but does not operate if the tube is coming out of standby, I recall there is some sort of thermal switch control). Try turning the set off at the wall and leaving to go cold (ie overnight)
Also there might be something within the setup menu of the set. My duaghters partner had a high-end (for its time) Panasonic CRT which had a degauss function.
Otherwise get a biggish plasma. But get a good one, Panasonic or maybe Sony. 42 is a good size without overwhelming the room it's in (assuming a normal size room)
Prices are falling, how much lower can they got. 42 Panasonic bought about 6 months ago seemed a bargain at $1600, now can be bought for about $900. 32 panasonic (lcd) bought a few weeks ago $499

Sony don't do Plasma Pete.
To the OP, before deciding on Plasma/LCD/LEDLCD talk to knowledgeable sales people. They are out there, I know, I was one of them. Still technically am I suppose.

Spent 5 years seling tvs and the such (only just gave it in). First things to try...
Are there any speakers near the tv if so move them, non magnetically sheilded can cause what your describing.
Second if its still all shit try a magnet and run it across the screen ( a fridge magnet will do) it may fix the problem.
If not it aint worth a thing bin it and get a new 1. Ideally if you can wait for a 20% off sale get it then (its bellow store cost, the manufactors refund the store at the end of the sale)

All Full HD and good models when I brought mine the local repair agent said dont waste your money on the Extended warranty on a sony just make sure you get a good surge protector.
Sony was our most reliable brand followed by panasonic then Samsung I wouldnt reccomend a panasonic Lcd as they spend more of there money on plasma than LCD Samsung and sony share the same screens but the other parts are different sonys build is better but samsung usually gives more specs for your money

lone_slayer, where I worked 20% was still giving us a little margin, only about 3-4points on a new model but still there was some fat in there, before we got refunds.

At noels it quite often showed a negetive margin it was definatly better than saff pricing so a good chance head office kept a little bit of margin away from us lowely salesmen

Plasma Vs LCD Vs LED..... I prefer LCD and where I worked 5 out of 6 sales people prefered LCD Plasma supposingly has better colour but the diffence is very slim if you game or are using it as a monitor get LCD dont worry about responce rates not an issue any more and only noticed it once as somthing to note in store. LCD is more efficient than Plasma
LED is just a LCD screen with a better back light even more efficent than LCD but costs alot more in the bigger size colours are suppose to be marginally better.
If I won lotto tonight I would by a Big LED on my normal budget Definatly a LCD for me... If you do buy big make sure its full HD.

The only time we noticed response times on screen was during the Hamilton V8's And the had a lap time counter working in the millaseconds Our views were (best to Worst). The difference was only noted on the last digit eg. 103.001
LCD 200 hz
Plasma (Low resolution)
Lcd 100 hz
Plasma 100 hz
Plasma
LCD
Also when they quote 600hz on a screen its a differnt thing they are monitoring
The newer 100hz are a bit beter than what there were then not sure who is still doing 200hz

theres a good chance they will come back rather quickly... like a day or so maybe a week so keep yoour eye out..... I had a crt that had fallen off a cabinet that i got my hands on and was doing the same thing un plugging it or a magnet could change it for a while but not long term.... ( i think it was an internal speaker causing the issue) Oh and remember insurance is your friend I had a 34" sony that my wife toped up a plant that was on a shelf above it and well boom they tried to repair but couldnt get parts so a new 37" came my way paid the differnce and got a 40"...
Note: A repair man can tell the differnce between water poured onto your tv and water from a pot plant the pot plant water is usually a bit dirtier and has more elecrolites or somthing so does more damage and if this accidently happens when the Tv is on and plugged it will fry it if not pugeed in or on a wet tv can still work when dried out.

my 4 yo 50 inch samsung plasma lost its picture last week and as i was helping the repair dude load it in his van i arxed him what brand was most reliable, he said that he had 1 of every brand in the van then so they were all much the same reliabilaty wise. Hardley Normals have a big sale on at the moment, i could buy my set new now for $1500

so a good chance head office kept a little bit of margin away from us lowely salesmenI haven't worked in the electrical applicances sector, but I have done financials for other large companies, and from what I've seen this is common practice, FWIW.
/edit: Went through the TV thing recently, plumped for a Samsung 7 series 46" in the end. To my eye, the only thing that topped it was (IIRC) a Panasonic 66" Plasma bad arse mofo of a thing costing twice the price. Only regret is I didn't get the 50" (7 series) because I thought my room wasn't really big enough. Tripe. Complete and utter bollocks. Nobody ever died thinking I wish I got the smaller TV, 1080p has well sorted that out. Only bad side effect is that I don't bother with DVDs or most movie downloads any more... blurays are well worth the money (mind you unless I have a hard on for something in particular I only buy em on the cheap). Inception on bluray at 100" was some kind of awesome.

Hmmm, interesting connundrum this....
I myself no nothing about TV's but my best mate Dave knows them inside out, he is a TV technician.
As a side issue, I was Dave's best man at his wedding. He married the daughter of the man that owned the TV aerial company he worked for. The service was long and boring but they had a great reception.........
