View Full Version : Cultural awareness?

I see the Masterchef NZ folk are in the firing line after shots of contestants sitting on food presentation benches have been viewed.

As a middle class pakeha sheila, I am aware of the cultural significance of not sitting on tables from which you eat - we even discouraged students from sitting on desks at school, even though they're not even for eating from. However I do have to wonder, are there things we carry too far? It was pointed out in the article that for many pakeha sitting on a table, or putting feet up on the table isn't exactly a huge no-no. (In many homes it might not be considered good manners, but hardly a :shit: horrified moment; in fact in lots of homes its not uncommon for the dirty family moggy to sits its hairy little dirty bum on the table, even while people eat!!! don't ask, doesn't happen in our house, but seen it heaps of times...)
So where do we draw the line at what should be seen as acceptable on tv or not?

thoughts anyone?

I sit on the bench all the time at home. My excuse has always been that there are no seats in the kitchen. I don't see what the big deal is to be quite honest. It's not like you're sitting there stark naked anyway.

In my opinion, Maori should not be given extra rights because they are Maori. They are people too and should be treated in the same way everyone else is.
If they want money they have to earn it, and not live off the taxpayer etc...

You have got to be kidding????
Are you telling me that someone has complained because they saw someone on the tele sitting on a table????

Surely there are much much much worse things to complain about, like whether the toilet paper should hang off the roll away from the wall or against the wall.

Honestly some of these serial complainers need to be told to fuck the fuck off.

How come the cultural group that frown upon sitting on tables think nothing of flinging soiled nappies out of their car windows?

You jest, but it was the introduction of toilet paper which meant people no longer needed to walk around or sit on tables with a shitty arse. Pants and trousers helped as well.

Let's by all means discourage people sitting on tables so as not to predominantly upset one culture, just after we've discouraged people beating children to death in all cultures.

away......

Then there the problem of 2 ply paper when some one splits the paper leaving the perforated tear strips out of sequence...

Me? I have maori relatives and do not sit on food handling surfaces or such...however, when I have made a cultural FauxPax....it has been politely ignored...and that is curtesy.....

....making a fuss about Master Chef is pathetic correctness gone ferral....next thing there will be no more Bacon n egg breakfasts or Roast Pork n gravey rolls incase we upset another sector of society...

People have a right to have an opinion on the matter in their OWN home.
Outside that, they should just fuck up.

Certain cultures have bigger things to worry about than where other people fucking sit.

Hey back in the day the food may have gone directly on the table, and they only wore grass skirts so it was relevant back then for sure to prevent food borne illness.

I wouldn't want a bare bum on the surface my food is presented on.

How many people wash their hands thoroughly before preparing food ? Thats a bigger issue.

I get pissed off when people call me "Pakeha". I'm not a "pakeha", I'm white.

I once got told off by a Maori person for sitting on a table in a school library (it was NOT a table that people eat off) so I told the cunt to phuck off.

Interesting wikepedia exert

"since the term Pākehā is based on predominant ancestry, while the term Māori is based on cultural self-identification"

so I may be a pakeha because of my ancestry but Maori self identify as maori - maybe I should self identify at the next census.

Yep and that kind of valid historic reasoning is why jews don't eat pork and shellfish.

Quite why they still don't eat pork and shellfish now is another question, especially considering the last mass outbreak of pork induced prolapsed rectums was back in 0001AD.

Nope...think you'll find too much 'pork' is still the main cause!!!

Hmm, I might have to try this sort of cultural "don't give a shit". Hmmm... might start by sitting next to Muslims in lectures and drawing pictures of Mohammed. Yes, sounds like a good plan :innocent:

I do actually agree shit like this is stupid! And I will gladly draw Mohammed in class... I'll post the results :p

Make sure the artistic rendering of this Mohammed fellow includes him having buttsecks with a sheep.

That is sure to go down well with the terrorist, oops, I meant Muslim community.

Precisely the problem; that should be first and once that's sorted we might - might, mind you - start worrying about other cultural nanny state manifestations. OTOH getting as far as worrying about that seems unlikely...
