Part of the deal of blogging for KR prior to my accident was a subscription to the magazine. KR has gone from strength to strength in the last couple of years and I came to look forward to the mag thudding into the mailbox.

KR kept sending me the mag for the agreed term which obviously extended beyond my accident. Well beyond my accident.

Being on ACC for a few months you don't have extra cash for treats like bike mags and the free sub kept me in touch and hankering after bikes.

There's a lot of criticism of KR that I think is unwarranted, especially in light of my experiences with them.

I'd like to thank Ross and Big Dave for their faith in me and for being good guys after I stopped contributing. I'm a paying customer again, but one good turn deserves another.

Very kind, down to the Publisher Jim. I will pass it on.

Maxwell smart voice - say I hope I wasn't out of line with that lawn mower crack.... :-)

Given the other thread currently raging, the last post on that page is a classic.

Good onya KR!

I like the mag too, unfortunately the cash flow was a bit tight this year and I couldn't afford to renew my sub, maybe next year!

That would account for SOME of his grumpiness......

Not much of it. You have to admit, he has a pretty good grump going.

Jims out in the dark, sitting by a dwindling campfire with his family and holding a pack of glowering red eyed wolves at bay with nothing more than a pointy stick and sharp wits and there is fuck all I can think of to help right now other than giving him space to win his Waterloo.

In short, Jim has every reason to feel very grumpy indeed - in fact having a mere lawnmower in his crack at the moment, even a ride on version would seem like a blessed relief compared to the whole factory farm full of supercharged threshing machines with kinsu knives for blades he currently has on his back!

Being merely grumpy is a testament to Jims resilience and if I was in his position I doubt I would have stopped at grumpy, i would be orbitting planet appocaypse about now wishing for two big red 'destruct' buttons instead of one.

Having some knowledge of this but being unable to do or say much has made me realise what a fine man Jim is to be able to bear such a load. There might come a time when his story can be told but its not right now and that will just have to satisfy.

Ahhh yes, sorry. My comment was in no way meant to be negative and I had thought to add "But then he has good reason to be". However I posted in haste which goes to prove the addage. "Read twice, post once"

Kiwirider is a good read, but one thing I'd personally like to see would be a Motorcycle road guide tour type section/blog. Outlining sweet routes to travel around NZ. For example the best/enjoyable route to get from Wellington to Auckland, or Hawkes bay to New Plymouth.

I am pretty bad when it comes to travelling and usually take state highways which are dead boring. So something like this would be extremely beneficial to new travellers like myself.

Just a hint.

(I'd even subscribe if it had this!)

Thanks - I'll pass it on.

To make it a regular thing we'd need some reader input as well - for which we pay. Base price is $150 for 600 words and three hires pics - for items published in the mag.

It's something we should do more of online too - then we can google map it.

One option to tide you over until KR does something like that is to read ride reviews, or the posts of regular bloggers if they are out riding. You soon pick up on the regularly mentioned roads and begin to know where they all are. I know, because that's how I learnt.

The best way however, is to go for a ride. Go explore. Ride roads you've never ridden, and you'll soon find the gems (and have a bunch of adventures on the unsealed ones) :innocent:

Last weekend, even though I had a map printed out and the road highlighted, I still missed it..

I intend on doig this once I get a larger bike. Once upgraded, I intend to do a lot of travelling.

Yip, totally understand that. I will most likely look at getting a GPS.

IMO just get out there with a full tank of gas, and the attitude, of "I wonder where that road goes." Even if it goes nowhere, you can always turn around and come back out. NZ roads are very well signposted. I may not always know exactly where I am, but I seldom get lost.

If you are in unfamiliar territory always take note of the road names you go down, in case

You need to navigate back
you want to do the road again
you want to write up a great trip report
you come to grief and need help, like my unnamed friend.

We have done a featured ride page in the past. I did half a dozen 'roads to ride' and my 'Top 10' , but I ran out of photo collateral.

Racing Dave has done several too.

Well, usually around here after criss-crossing and doubling back enough times I find an interection with a main road that will say 'x hicktown this way, y hicktown that way'

Then I have to make a call as to which one will have an open gas station, and which one I will reach with what I think I have left in the tank. It pays to have a passing acquaintance with the general layout of NZ towns.
