He's defending the charges and hasn't been convicted yet.

What's this mean then...
A 47-year-old Invercargill man yesterday admitted eight charges of theft from the Southland Motorcycle Club.

I guess that means he's admitted it
The article referenced in the original post said he was defending the charges.

John's a good guy and he did alot for racing down south.
i don't know all the details or why and in no way endorse or encourage his actions but its not all about tar and feathers. People do make bad decisions and stupid mistakes, doesn't necessarily make them lowlifes.

Yes, he did good work in an area where it's hard to find and keep workers for the sport.
BUT long term the damage he did may just prove fatal for roadracing in the deep south.
The figures I've heard bandied about are significant - and the likelihood of the club seeing any of it back is very small.

John Smart has done a lot of good work for the club in the past and the story I have heard from a number of people in the know at that end of the country,Is he is a victim of a club culture that is long standing,Whereby there are no proper records kept of cash transactions including crossentries and the reimbursment of helpers.
Of course I dont have all the facts,But what I can say is,All the business dealings I have had with John Smart have been handled in a proffesional manner.
However,From the experience I had with the new administration at the National round there this year,I'd be more worried now,No reciepts given,An accusation the very next day that my entry had not been paid,By the same person I had paid it too,Incorrect fee charged and NO refund or change offered,Informed my transponder wasnt working and forced to hire one off the club only too find after qualifying I no less than 3 qualifying times from 2 transponders and when I told them about it was told in no uncertain terms there would be no refund for their transponder hire????

Yes a total shame how this all has ended as he did wonder's for Roadracing In the South.I have nothing againt Mr Smart, but this sort of behavior cant be tolarated. Clubs run as non profit as it is and as Grumph said is previous post The club will suffer in time..
As for BILLY you should ring Steve Winteringham if you have any inquiries regarding how things were run at nationals, this man had no previous experience in running a national meeting, and as far as I know nationals wouldnt have taken place if he didnt put his hand up.No one's Perfect BILLY!

1) It was him I was dealing with at the meeting
2)He never answers his phone
3)He doesnt return his messages
4)Your right nodody is perfect,Me included,But a National points round is a very different animal to a club day and should be treated as such,If your out of your depth you seek help from those who have done the job before,Names like John Beck,Peter Ramage and if your who I think you are(Used to ride a KR1 back in the late eighties and are a past President and roadrace convener for SMCC)Yourself.

Guilty or not it's a shame things like this happen and tarnish a good clubs reputation.
Hopefully this gets worked out and is just a bump in the road for the club. I know there are alot of good people working behind the scene to bring the club back up to where it should be.

IF this man is guilty of these charges, I feal very sorry for him and his family, something other than JUST GREED has prompted him to do it.
Anyone that has dealt with this man over the years Know,s what a true gentelman he is.
SMCC, very sorry to all the members that this happened to such a positive club

I too have had great dealings with John and this is very sad news. I would be very hesitant calling him a low life a this early stage of the procedures. It would be interesting to know the details once all has come out in the wash...
Remember, some of our ancestors were all criminals trying to escape our own mother England as they were to be hanged...most of them were merely criminals because they stole bread trying to survive because of a corrupt system.
If John was doing whatever he did for personal gain then he will need to face the music...I would hazzard a guess there is more to this story than what is in this article.

Interesting this is your first post Vincent....hidden agenda perhaps? Care to put a name to your alias?

I can't see any hidden agendas in what little I know of the matter...no one will be gaining anything least of all satisfaction out of this.
BTW Marcus, were you born in Australia ?....some of our ancestors criminals indeed !

The hidden agenda was in reference to someone starting a new profile just to post this link...either not a member before on this site or creating another alias because they are shit stiring...I'm not referring to the actual case having a 'hidden agenda.' And no mate...NZ born...but my ancestors left England to escape apparently...bunch of crims!

Marcus as a Southland Motorcycle Club committee member and as a club it self we are all much very sad in what's happend, the article by looks of it is the same as Southland times and are truthfull fact's,John did alot for roadracing, the club was thankfull for the hardyard's he put in.He's not a lowlife he's a human being,Human being's make mistakes,But this sort of mistake's affect a whole lot people eg.freinds family etc and He does need to be made accountible for his action's....

here here mate,
The only reason i commented on John's dealings is that he is not a "lowlife". I don't know all the facts and I assume has done wrong but is owning up to his actions and accepting responsibility.
Eitherway, I hope Billy and everyone else gives the time to grow new management (its farking hard to find!!!!). They'll fuck up but thats just part of learning.
I personally hope to make it south for all their off season series, once i can ride again! Gotta support those who support road racing.........

What you on about Tim???? that doesnt make to much sense Im confused?
Oi, ya big Gimp - Sort out your confusion AFTER YOU'VE DROPPED OFF MY 2 YEARS DOWN AND NOW PERFECTLY DRY, SEASONED FIREWOOD ...........
As seen on other threads here, the "facts" and the "truth" are often not in the same sentence, let alone the same page
Yes, John has done an immense amount of work for the Club over the years.
Yes, The Club Management had some issues with certain aspects of Johns operations.
Yes, there is now an active Court Case
All FACTS ....... One other fact that bears consideration - absolutely NO-ONE involved in this issue ( well, maybe with the exception of the Coppers & Lawyers ) is gaining ANYTHING except sleepless nights and ulcers over this .........
Most of those on here spouting loud and long, would be better off putting their energies into making sure they lighten the load of those within their OWN Club who do the hard yards to ensure that the rest get to race.
