Been stuffing round with second hand starter motors for my Virago XV750 because the new ones from Yamaha are $1400.
After yet another starter failed on me... I got to spend some time surfing the net and came across a couple sites worth the look :)

For older bikes try http://www.oldbikebarn.com

But I ended up importing a brand new Starter motor from http://electricmotorserviceonline.com .... the cost certainly surprised me.... the starter was only $USD 92.00 and the freight was $USD 74.00, costing me, with the current conversion rates, a grand total of $NZ 217-40 ..... that's one heck of a saving and the starter seems to be excellent, the Yamaha OEM starter is 2 brush and this one I bought is a 4 brush and the online ratings seem ok.

The only problem I had was attempting to do the transaction with my credit card and altho the transaction failed.... the bank took the dollars out of my account and I had to wait 10 days for it to bounce back again :( but I set up a paypal account and payed it successfully with that. The starter was sent USPS and took about 12 days to arrive.

Leaves me wondering if we are being rather ripped off in NZ here with automotive parts.

Paypals served me well for the last 8 years, never a problem. And yea with a few exceptions you have been ripped off buying local....for years.Maybe just do some research before spending the $ eh.Theres blokes like the suspender guru R Taylor that have a lifetime of experience combined with (from what i know ) a "seems like a good bugger" thing which no matter how cheap stuff is over yonder you cant ignore.
