Pretty fair I reckon, if you're car pooling with 3 or more people then no fee for you. I'm sure motorcycles are exempt and fees only during peak flow hours. Would make Auckland a much nicer city to travel into in the morning and also rake in some money to take out of rates (yeah right), get more money into public transport and less on fuel with car pooling. And lots may get on their bike be it push or motored. :yes: I'm all for it.

Look at who it is sponsored by; the Business Council for sustainable development. Wonder what development they wish to sustain. Perhaps they want a congestion free run for the new bigger trucks. Would this be why there is an opt in fee I wonder. This isn't about benefit to commuter, council or ordinary citizen. Wellington has already proven their public transport can't cope and it is subsidized from the rates to boot. Wakey wakey time to smell the horse :shit:

This idea sounds great! Let's rip ordinary, honest people off even more. It's yet another tax on a tax. First we pay vehicle licensing fees, then we pay fuel tax + GST, now this?!

Oh, and I bet we will still have to enjoy the typical third world roads NZ has to offer, with extra taxes on top. I couldn't have thought of a better idea myself. They have better roads in Africa without having to pay extra taxes.

Initially it lowered the amount of vehicles entering the city, "congestion" eased on the roads BUT moved the congestion into other areas and flooded public transport.
The populace bitched and moaned while the wealthy drove their cars.
People saw a time/cost advantage to paying the tax so started returning to their cars.
So. The authorities are still happy raking in the money and congestion continues.

We have it in Singapore and it goes by the name of Electronic Road Pricing (ERP).

Every vehicle (including bikes) have a transponder. If you pass under an ERP gantry money is deducted from the card in the transponder. Price varies depending on vehicle type, time of day and location. Unlike London, which has a single charge for a day, you get charged each time you pass under a gantry.

It makes no difference to congestion as far as I can tell, it's just a way to take money from motorists.

Sg gets around (or at least limits) congestion by controlling the number of vehicles on the road. Every vehicle needs a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) which lasts for 10 years and stays with the vehicle. The number of COEs available is limited, when a vehicle is scrapped the COE gets released back into the general pool.

COEs are bought at auction. In 2008 they got as low as $8, late last year they were as high as $75,000. Add that to the cost of a car which already has high sale tax and you get the idea. Fancy paying $100K for a Suzuki Swift?

Bike COEs are currently around $2.5K.
