Thingamy jig. Or you could use spring expanding pliers.
Spring puller. Really.
Come on, Pete. Using proper tools doesn't build character.

Yeah I know, but it leaves you with all the skin still on ya knuckles!
Years ago when I was spannering for Avis, I stayed back late at night to work on my KLX250. I was winding up the throttle return spring with a set of pliers, and slipped off the spring.
I had a shitload of tension on the thing, and it did a full turn to gather speed, then the hook end of the spring buried its self right into the meat of my thumb. It was trying to dig deeper with the tension on it, and I was trying to hold the fucking carb between my knees and with my only hand left wind the spring back out of my thumb.
I purchased my first spring puller the next day!
Spring puller. Really.
I asked for one of those the other night, was putting the side stand back on Annes bike, it had a double spring and was a bastard to get off. Machanic mate said side cutters and screwdriver will do. Putting it back on I just used one spring, make for a much easier kick up.

Gotta watch that the stand doesn't put its self down over a big bump with just the one (lightish) spring though mate.

Get a bunch of coins or washers. Bend the spring to one side, insert coins in gaps. Then do the other side.
Continue until the spring is "stretched" right out with a whole bunch of coins inserted between the coils.
Place on bike.

I did have a thought as to why the double spring but, the bigger of the two is the one that is one the bike now. And if Anne hits a bump that big she will have more to worry about than the sidestand coming down surely...:shit:

She's probably out doing jumps on the thing right now

Simple, and genius; though safety glasses for any flying washers might be advised.
All the bikes I've had you could just pull the spring over with some pliers (sometimes vicegrips if especially tough), or take off the stand 'stop' and sort it that way.
Screwdriver.
You have to use one hand as backstop for this technique!
The best thing I have used is bootlaces! Yes really! Esp good for those 2 spring jobbies like Annes sidestand Mark?

Didn't even think of that Al....the double spring was a little tough to kick up, the side stand is a tad more forward on the Bandit than say on my bike.

Sometimes I have done it by unbolting the stand, hooking the springs up and then levering the stand back into place, always worked out a lot easier than fucking about with the springs

Not quite an epic thread dig, but a dig none the less.
Does anyone know where a couple of springs that would be suitable for a center stand maybe purchased in Christchurch?
