I have had the opportunity and pleasure to meet up with Adam Shani who is our very first around The World Traveller to our club. His bike is now in New Zealand after travelling seafreight from overseas. He will now tour the South Island for about a month and then be back into The North Island. We will meet with Adam again when he hits here again. We will also organise a ride for our members to meet up with him also.
Touratech have this weekend run a competition to guess the weight of Adam's HP2 loaded with those Zega Prop Panniers etc. Have a go, prize is a helmet to guess the correct weight, and yes, facebook is the comp method.

Weekend Weigh-In: Guess the correct weight of Adam Shani's fully loaded BMW Motorrad HP2 Enduro and win a Touratech Helmet Shelf! - http://bit.ly/zjDMeo
Want to win one of these? Take a guess at how much Adam Shani's fully loaded BMW Motorrad HP2 Enduro weighed. First person to post the correct weight wins! Follow this link for the photo - http://on.fb.me/Aytu9m

Adam visits Northern Gravel crew on our local ride as he was staying at his friends home who also lives in Puhoi. Here we detail to him passes/tracks etc in The South Island.

Adam will be back approx one month and we will see more of him before he ships his bike over to spend time in Australia.

The newz is out.......... LOL
Cut Cat patrol taking it on SADDLE BUSTING and giving it heaps my news is that some could not ring anymore from ..........
One has yet again worn thru a CHAIN and SPROCKET............... but the good news, all stayed upright
One with a pillion on the back riding in the Cut Cat Unit bailed to keep pillion still on the back.................
Yes, that was the (Plowie/Kuriger ride) The boys do like to dial it up when they are out there
Covered about 500kms on the Sunday and I think about 600kms on the Monday and me on the XT<<<<<<<<<<<<
on the way back also took in Waikawau Beach and yet again ANOTHER tunnel and also Marakopa and out thru Waitomo
gravel roads in excellent condition thru there freshly graded the whole way along
Pix up sooooon
Shame you couldn't join in You can always do a one dayer anytime on our trips we had several who came for even half a day
ALLLLLLL SKILLL LEVELS catered for on our rides Those who like to dial it up and those who are Out There And Like To Do It.......
We always run several groups on our gravel rides Cut Cat Patrol (aka out there having fun)
and the new Mid Rangers (Out There And Doing It) Everyone who attended our ride had a blast wouldn't miss it for anything
From Raglan/Kawhia/Pio Pio/Waitomo some pretty much covered it alllll on the Sun before we got down country, then we travelled thru a nice forestry road circuit and out (exellent) Also KIWI Road offered up a goodie as our last serve up before we hit AWAKINO pub about 7 for the night
Those Taranaki Gravel Roads are awsome wow in fact I may be in training in the Taranaki region shortly
There is actually well maintained gravel on those roads and the ones we travelled over were in an excellent condition
Thanks so much to Henry and Dave for this ride, and for all who attended and marked our corners for us
The Awakino pub looked after us really well you couldn't get better value for money excellent and the company excellent
We will be running this ride again, we have people who also live in the Taranaki Region who know alllll of these roads
As this was so popular we will post up another date for this one again
ps did you spot the Yammie 660 amongst those CATS..................... well I don't know I would spot that one for tooo long

Just back from Poronui We have 16 thousand acres to be enjoying. This ride we will take in a very small amount of these lands.
Will be a mix of stream crossings/forestry roads/beech forests/grazing and tussock lands/high hilltop rides(challenge sections of our ride) large rock to be clambering over and more...............................
Register your interest to me prior to Friday of this week for last deadline bookings.
PM me direct if you are interested and how many are interested.
We will be at Poronui until approx 3pm and then we will head over to take a last blast over a forest deviation and thru Whirinaki.
Sat night can be back to Taupo - suggested accomm could be Stag Park Diner or Taupo Top 10.
If not wishing to take in TUKINO on the sun mng on the way home then exit strategy on the sat night.
There will be a ride fee/land access for this ride.
This ride is over private lands and we will travel along Taharua River which meets with the mighty Mohaka.
Our hosts will provide a WORKMANS lunch also on the completion of our ride.
ALL WISHING TO ATTEND THIS RIDE MUST CONFIRM DIRECTLY WITH ME as there will be a sign on and registration prior to attending this ride along with our liability form - these are requirements from Poronui also. We are looking to play this straight with out hosts, as Sept when STAG hunt season has finished we will again utilise this property and there will be many more challenge sections. You will need nobbs if attending this ride over the Sept season. Sept ride will take us higher up into the Taharua Valley hills and into the deer gaming blocks. The big stags at the moment will be pushing thru fences in the event of motorbike noise. So rollll on Sept.
This is a very first at this property and 16 thousand acres wow, hundreds of tracks and many more still to be mapped and used.

That looks good there...
Thanks
I cannot believe we are allowed to explore these lands. They are so very well maintained and also they are very diverse with what they do on this property. From horse riding/trout fishing/big game hunting/specialised animal breeding. Wow 16 thou acres. Magic. Poronui is also well off the main highway. You see those big hills but could not imagine how fantastic it is thru here.
We will be using walkie talkies as the tracks are numerous and we have only tapped into a small portion for this run. We will build on this run and will need to go over again and spend another day and do more tracks. The route we are riding this time alters as you ride thru the lands. They also have bee keepers that have off loaded 1000 hives onto the land as the bees like the manuka to which there is a huge amount of. They are just being collected and taken off now. There is also a SAFARI camp that is located down by the MOHAKA River and we may get to go there for a break stop also. Another hut on the property is called RED HUT and sleeps four also. We will be allowed that periodically also. This is going to offer huge potential to us that enjoy a variety of terrain to cross over. This ride takes you high up in those hills also and the views are awsome. Pumice tracks are awsome both summer and winter to ride over and suitable for bikes WITHOUT nobbs on also. Excellent traction and there are NO wash outs on this property also.
You should see if you South people can come up for the SEPT GAME route. This route can only be done once deer/stag hunt is finished. It will take you even further up into those hills into the big hunt blocks. It will have many more technical tracks than what we will do this time. Far more forestry based and much higher into to those hills. So for Sept we will run two routes. I will post up more pics maybe next couple days.
When we are able to check out the Game Blocks I will mail you pics of this also.
Poronui like us dual purpose riders that take in our environs, and they find us in fitting with their principals also. So wow for us. A Play Block of land.
Now twice per year also. Fantastic.
Thanks for the NICE comment.
I am always on the look out for much more of this, and know there must be other places for us to explore.

thanks it is always a compromise with an adv bike but jim and tim enjoy the F800's as much as they enjoy our KTM fleet
we love long distance riding and then of course the explore that comes with......................
our ktm's are not such a nice comfort ride to get here but the F800 pefect for the long travel and very good over pumice also
great having pumice tracks to ride over can be ridden winter and summer as it drains really welll

A good call it was to call off and to reschedule our Poronui adv ride at the weekend. A thanks to our Poronui hosts who have rescheduled our date to ride over their lands to the 31st March.
Listening to the radio tirelessly to find out when the storm would pass and so bring out those bikes for a small explore, we were advised tht the tail end would be over around the 10am mark on the sat mng. The winds were so big they called off the Taupo Iron Man event and that has not happened in very many years. A first in quite some time. So 9:30am we met up at the mobil at Taupo Lake Front nd did indeed put together a small explore mission.
I have not ridden in winds this big in a few months and was giving it second thoughts as we were parked up waiting for our KTM visitor to arrive on his 690 ADV bike. Just being parked was not good. Tough and go if the bikes would stay upright ??? But Jim did give me a talking to about being able to ride a bike in ALLLL weather conditions. So it was thought to be a good experience also.
WE decided to venture out and over to Pureora forestry and then we thought we would get some shelter once tucked away inside. The ride out the back of Kinloch was a bit hairy in places but the small XT held its own and we did manage to make it to Pureora in one piece. Taking in one or two new gravel roads on the way over those big hill ridgelines in the open places very scarey and I frequently got blown off my wheel tracks and into the thick stuff in the middle of the roads. Was not sure in places whether to open the XT up to the max or slow it down ???? No one was around and the boys had long goneeeeeee So decided to open her up and cut through it was prob the best option.
Making it to Pureora itself the big winds had held the rains back so now it was time to stop roadside and to gear it up. Big rain and a soaking was now to be had. But great explores in many of the side roads running thru there also. After our explore we pushed on to Whakamaru and a nice warm up for a brief time before pushing on again into the Waikaiti Valley to do some more exploring. Another full day was had.
Those big winds played havoc with the new Shoei helmet and was constantly buffeting my head in every direction. The wind picks up that helmet quite a lot. Also hanging off the sides of the small XT with the big wind gusts to try and stay upright and stop being blown across the road with those cross winds quite a mission.
Great ride and excellent company and a right buffeting was had.
Sunday another KTM joined with the lads and they set off to do a SPECIAL explore. They rode up the second highest hilltop in Taupo and took in fantastic views over the Lake Taupo and Kinloch areas and also visited the transmittor station. From here they set off out to do more explore missions over that side of the country and found many many more new gravel roads.
Another excellent weekend.
Looking forwards to catching up with many on our very first South Head Forest ride coming up this weekend. This is a very first for our new club and a new experience this club will be working to build on. Here we will be riding on the back of Forestry permit. We wish to thank Forestry for this privilege.

Directions:
End S H 16 turn left and head towards Parakai and onto South Head Road
Those with SMALL fuel tanks with a range of less than 180kms fuel range turn right and head into Helensville township and gas up your bikes first before back onto South Head Road and then into SHelley Beach. Shelley Beach turnoff will be on your right hand side.
Turning right????? beware this is a turnoff that will hit you quickly. We are using the small camp store at Shelley Beach itself. No fuel here, only refreshment stop. Make sure you also have enough liquid and snacks to last also. Attending a beach run AFTER the ride and a small fuel range??? good idea to bring that extra fuel to top up. I can arrange fuel cans to be delivered back to Shelley Beach Store for collection later. More sooon.
Sign on/riders brief and then you will be sent on up the highway again.
Exact fuel range for this ride will be posted here by the end of this week.
For those with less than 180kms of fuel make sure you register at Shelly Heach with a FULL tank. You could look to bring a 5Litre with you as we can store it for you also.
More at the end of this week.

Gas up your bikes at Helensville prior to attending our pre registration at Shelley Beach 9am
If you can make 180kms out of your fuel tank that should be enough for our mng.
Beach run MAY be added for those that wish after our forest stint.
We run Rain or Shine on the Sunday.

No guarantees but I will try to be there for 9.00am, sounds like a good ride!
High tide at Muriwai is at 1.00pm so unless you're feeling really macho it won't be ridable until 4.00pm...... conversely it would be a good morning ride up there at 7.30 to get to Shelley beach for 9.00, maybe via Wilson road?
Can I get up that early?

Head out via the motorway that will take you out to Helensville. Fuel range less than 180KMS??? Turn right into Helensville and fuel up that bike, plse arrive at our registration with a full tank of gas. Bring spare fuel if you require to fuel up also once we are inside the forestry gates. Fuel cannisters can be collected on your exit out of forestry.
So from Helensville, head back out again on South Head Road and ride THRU Parakai. Continue onwards about 20 mins more riding and on your right hand side you will come across a very sharp bend to your right and the turnoff will come out at you very quickly on your right hand side. SHELLEY BEACH turnoff has a one only store and a beach front. Plse be puncutal as you are able on the Sunday.
On commencement of our ride, as tides are not in our favour and to get thru the ride that has been planned for us, we will exit back out to Helensville township for early afternoon luncheon. A break of 30 mins will be taken to fuel up those bikes, take a lunch break and then we will regroup and for those that wish we will take you on a gravel road ride and lead you back out to exit for home on the motorway link. So make this your choice , LESS IS MORE OR MORE IS MORE........................ (I am thinking the latter)

To all those that braved the big rains and headed out to Shelley Beach for our registration and also to meet and great with our overseas visitor, well done indeed. Waking up first thing on the mng OF and AFTER listening to the many comments re (geeze I looked out my window this mng and thought thanks but no thanks) but then it just seemed to happen, and they made it to our registration.
Me, I left home 6:30am to meet with our guest rider Adam Shani overseas traveller from Israel who has been travelling around the world now for many years. I was scheduled to meet up with him 7am at Helensville township and it was one dark/wet ride out also. Adam said to us all, that to make this dream of travelling around the world happen Don't Just Dream It Do It..... From the case files of One Very Tough Day At The Office. This statement drew many laughs from us also. Adam told us all that he could still now be working on his parents farm in Israel and would prob today still be tending the fields and working on the farm until the day he died. So he had a dream to explore the world and he has made that dream happen. It has been an awsome experience to meet up with such a worldly travelled person. What a lovely person Adam is.
Our day began with our registration to attend our forestry ride and by this time the weather was balmy and very overcast. But No Rain the whole ride, and it made for excellent ride conditions in the forest also. Wow, I would consider myself highly spoilt to have that as MY playground to play amongst each and every day. The GATES were unlocked and we entered forbidden territory. And yes, without a permit highly forbidden.
We were ushered thru and then led on a tour offering our adv riders a bit more of a play amongst the sand berm areas and several loops wre travelled thru. The second group rode the forestry gravel roads to meet up with further along. Out from this we headed towards a lovely track leading us thru the pine trees and the roads had thick thick chunks strewn on them for quite a bit and also a lot of this was concealed by the pine needles dropping off overhead. This was excellent riding.
My zest soon came to an end when we were led thru (just a tiny weee section of sandy bermie area that also had the pine needle coverage happening - concealment tactics happening) The road led down, down and then just down. We parked up for a break alongside a massive drop off due to huge soil erosion. Well spotted beachside along with the unusually calm tide two dead sharks lying belly up. This made for some interest from the group. This was an excellent experience and the many many differing bikes amongst us, even those of the big GS1200cc BMW bikes also made it thru with no probs.
When we made it back from our first loop we took another break and then our forestry leader (who was also off to conduct a FURTHER 3 hours of training for his upcoming event) then ushered the cut cats another thrill time out amongst it alll. Another gravel road route was also on offer for those that wished to take it out there again.
A very big thanks to forestry for this whole experience. This is an excellent playground to learn to ride those gravel roads and to also take in a few more slight off roading skills. This whole mng was rideable by all of the bikes that attended and I felt a great skill basing was had by all that attended also. Travelling over a wide variety of terrain is always excellent for upskilling.
We arrive at our entrance to forestry to begin our ride.
Adam Shani and HP2 will be leaving us this Weds to see what those Aussies are up to??? Welcome to Neil and Rachel - Jess will be so plsed to have another pillion along with her also

WE now have people making and marking our rides for us, which is excellent and some of these rides are over PRIVATE lands to which we are charged a "Group Fee" also. Many, many property owners ask Does Your Club Have A Permit???? Liability is a huge concern to property/station/forestry owners, and this question needed to be answered. The Flushing Out Of Cash????? How to FLUSH OUT CASH????
This New Club has been an excellent exercise, and to find from this result that we have so many who like this idea and to have joined our club accordingly is wonderful. We now have the funds to purchase our CLUB permit. This provides us with Fire Insurance and also Public Liability cover. Each member that has chosen to join us now owns a small portion of this club's permit and cover. Owning a permit has come about not from talking about the idea of having an actual ADV club, aka idle chat, but from the actual hard time and effort month after month Planning/Organising etc etc etc etc etc etc etc the list goes on - since we first started this club beginning of this year, and has now resulted in that we are now up and running and SAVING funds from each and every ride has given us the funds for this our goal, to own our club permit.
This Club now also has a brand new sponsor behind us also. I feel so very very proud of everything that I have achieved. To have many behind me that also like this concept and now also a sponsor who also likes the hard work and time and effort that has been put into this is payback to me and more than everything that I could ever have hoped for.
It is awsome tht people are now taking interest in providing these rides for us and we are more than happy to pay a small fee for time taken to provide us with a ride. We fully appreciate the time and effort it takes for someone to spend many hours on our behalf to make these rides for us. Thanks very much for your feedback.
Our forestry access also unfortunately does NOT get given to us for FREE either, and as a new club we look to follow in accordance to forestry guidelines and to have permitted access also, sad but true. Permits for legal access to areas is not FREE and does not come cheap either.
If you wish at any time to provide our new club with a mapped and marked out ride please do not hesitate to contact us. We appreciate the valuable time taken to provide these wonderful rides month after month for our members who have chosen to join us. We now also have a permit behind us and rides can now be made legally into forestry areas on the back of our club permit. We look forwards to having more like minded people on board to assist with the future of our club ADV planning of our rides. We wish to have an actual ADV riding club for everyone to enjoy and for more to come on board and to assist. We will also look to follow in the correct guidelines also.
We also notice there is a huge intake at each and every one of the more expensive five star high quality ADV rides that are currently being provided by BUSINESS ADV riding companies both here in the North Island and also the South Island. Business is booming for them and every one of their rides are FULLL. There seems to be a HUGE interest in also attending these quality five star ADV rides also. This also applies to the five star quality training sessions that are also being hosted around the country, the intakes are also full. Many that attend these five star quality ADV rides and tours/training sessions are Kiwi Bikers also???? I personally know of quite a few???
Thanks once again. Please contact if you wish to assist with the future of this new club.

Ok so maybe Im just paranoid but the more organisation, permits clubs and stuff I see, the less comfortable I feel.
All power to those who have gotten clubs up and running in any shape or form, so long as we all keep in mind the good old "cause and effect" laws.
Remember every action cause's a reaction. I would hate to see areas closed to "we the great unwashed" simply because we are not organised or wont pay :violin:

Trouble is it's already happened. Lots of areas are already off limits. What Sue and the club are doing is working with the land owners to get access where it would otherwise be impossible. Unfortunately this doesn't come free of charge.

In Akd and the closer surrounds allll access is gated and locked and we must look to comply with forestry regulations and rules at alll times.
Why have they locked us out of these areas???? ANSWERS please...... What must we do to gain access to these areas?????? An even tougher one??? Where apart from local access roads is there for us to legally be able to ride thru??? And what restrictions are there upon us to be able to do so???
Reminescing - my son on his F800 riding thru a road (it was NOT a road that required a permit to ride thru)

Hope the boys had a permit
This comment delivered to me from HANCOCKS FORESTRY MANAGEMENT
We must ensure we are following FORESTRY rules and regulations hence this permit issue and one of great importance as we all seem to very much enjoy doing this sort of riding. We are about all makes and models of bikes and look to make this club a great one for ALLLL to enjoy. I feel certain we can allll work together and make this great for everyone to enjoy. WE are alll ages and all skil levels also and we have a large proportion of those amongst us with big bikes so we also try to have rides for our big bikes also. WE really do try to cater for all that attend our rides.

What a load of tripe....not all jaffa are flush with cash, and those who are have worked there arses off to get there, your genralisation lacks thought.

A big thnks to all those that have entered my F U N competition.
The guessing of exactly what was "In The Box" certainly got a good amount of correct entries.
Amidst the ponderings were a few very good guesses to which I think a "Valiant Effort" prize will also be awarded.
Not many have guessed the extensive amount of work that has gone into the "Project Rebuild" on this new bike.
More will be revealed on the closing date of my competition.
This has been a lot of fun to which it was intended to be.
Roll on closing date. I think a few happy smiles will be "Out and About" when collecting their prizes.

I joined up to the club simply because as stated, a lot of areas are now access unless you have permits, pay for access etc. It's sad, but possibly the effect of stupid OSH people etc. You wouldn't gain access as a random individual, but with some work in a club, then yes, it's possible.
Lucky you to have all the open areas...

Many have liked this idea and contributed accordingly. Lets use what we have and find more places we can now access to be able to ride and enjoy.

It certainly would.
Unlikely within a National Park but if it is a "permitted activity" contained in the "Conservation Management Srategy" for the particular Conservancy where you want to ride (and motorcycling has to be stated specifically as a permitted activity) then a Concession may be obtained (for a small processing fee) from DOC. Check out the DOC website and search "permits and concessions"

The weather was excellent and we enjoyed a TRUE adventure in very many ways at The Station. I have just come back into Akd and am plsed with the comments from those who attended our Adventure Ride.
We met with our hosts and enjoyed mng tea and a chat before we set out to enjoy the many challenges and obstacles tht are present here in these lands. Jim and I have been given the unique opportunity to take guided adventure tours over the Station by arrangement with our hosts who enjoyed the total concept of our SMALL GROUP feel and how our group also conducted themselves over our day. Our hosts are very conscious of sustainability and environmental issues on these lands here. This property is NOT a motorised continual ride area and will not be used as such. As Jim and I are often down here at Taupo it fits that we will be able to take any rides that may crop up by arrangement with our hosts and we will have permission to take people thru. Excellent. I am looking to host two rides per year here. Missed our first ride, then join in for our second intake as this will be the last for this year.
The Station provided us with varying terrain and obstacles which we enjoyed and for some of us did definately provide a challenge. We were also able to offer several Challenge Sections for those who wished for it also. Towards the later part of our journey our hosts followed us thru the property and provided us with nice cool drinks aka privately bottled natural water - very nice touch. We enjoyed this when we stopped off for a brief spell to take in SAFARI campsite. N I C E doesn't quite come close!!! WOW - taking in the natural waters right on the very doorstep of this camp site set amongst the bush. AWSOME. Rushing water and rapids right on your entrance, magic.
Photo link will be posted here shortly to show you the many varying terrain sections we were fortunate to journey thru. Looking for an adventure over Poronui Station??? Jim will shortly visit Poronui AFTER hunting season which is now in full swing and will tackle the next part of the property which is currently being used for The Big Game Business here at Poronui. This will take you even higher up into the hills that are on this property and the views will be simply stunning. I am currently awaiting the limit to which I will be able to take on our next visit here on the 16th September. Nobby tyres will be needed for our next visit. Our next section of this ride will be thru more Pine Forestry on the Station also. Our next visit will be a fuller day visit as we have more terrain to journey thru. We may even look to repeat the lower sections of the property again also with a few more forestry roads added onto also. Many who joined us on this very first visit will be attending our next ride here again also. The ride after our Station visit was funnnn also. Journeying thru well over 100kms of forestry roads was just the nicest ending touch to the day before refuelling back at Murupara Service Station. The owners here certainly do remember us well now as we are tending to frequent their business premises on a regular basis these days. The afternoon ride was DUST DUST And Much More DUST, my facial pics true testament to the many corner men that roooostered past me on many occasions. Amongst the rooostering and the dust, I can say the afternoon was excellent. Hitting Murupara it was 6pm by now and nearing on attemptin to get d a r k. Decision, back thru the forestry????? or back into TAUPO via SHway, no real decision here except for those heading off home and NOT heading back into TAUPO and back to RANGITAIKI pub aka pack of filthy buggers we all were and in to tackle those Big Bugger Burgers that Duncan is fast becoming famous for. They did NOT disappoint. You won't know until you try them. Many many very TALLLLLL tales were told and I imagine a bundle of lies, can't quite remember mine but they were goodies - when you can't remember well they must be???? Meanwhile back into Taupo township sometime round 12pm I think (plus or minus) and to load up just one of the THREE XT250cc bikes that attended our ride. Meeting another local lady from Taupo itself just a most fantastic bonus and to find she also comes to our new group with a XT250 (FAMOUS once AGAIN)
ps ROGEY your undergarments did make it out of the dryer and LG I have your personal belongings also - now what else was there to bring back in bigsmoke AKD????
Not only did many spot deer running thru the tracks here but the streams are indeed fullll of fish. Amazing experience. Our hosts provided us with a most excellent day and we could not have been more looked after. LUNCH - excellent. Ride - EXCELLENT. Pics - EXCELLENT.
A very big thanks to our group that attended and respectfully rode thru these lands and enjoyed the privilege to which we have been given.
Sunday also did NOT disappoint and those who had the time to take in MORE on the Sunday before heading off for home they were NOT disappointed. An explore was had over local areas surrounding National Park and Turangi areas. Excellent.
Next intake September 16th 10 are confirmed at this date

I have come to love the Kiwi Rider Magazine, we ONLY get one copy delivered here to both Jim and myself, and with the strength of the dirt biking section growing amongst the pages of this magazine it has now become a bit of a tussle to see which one of us will tear at the plastic housing our mag. hmmmmm Who teared the pages from this latest issue??? Any guesses???
Last issue, I did the evil and ripped at the plastic to get at the mag??? much to the dismay of Jim??? yikes the new mag was delivered here yesterday and looking at the glossy cover of the dirt biker displayed I am sorry to say I did the evil again and demolished the plastic to smithereens. Only took a second and she was alll over. The pages smelt fresh and I was into MY mag.......
Jim commented on where the issue was??? as he had seen it on the table and had planned to tear into it first this time round, B U T missed out again, how to get to that plastic first is fast becoming apparant.
On flicking thru and heading towards the dirt bike section (my very favourite, I skimmed across an article which was about me, myself and I) yes it has provided Jim and myself with an entertaining read. This latest stir has even caused ONE of my friends to rush out and purchase his copy.

Being famous??? The article Hanne wrote was extremely well written, wow to have skills like that would be really nice. Now that I know I am replying and chatting to another FAMOUS person (sorry don't get me started) I feel quite privileged to have made your acquaintance.
It was a nice touch having those bright lights lighting up the forestry trails on our ride out to Murupara, so it didn't really matter what time we were out in the dark. Nice touch on the big bike and very handy.
You handle that big bike well and I remember your saying to me quote/unquote: "This Bike Is No Wall Trophie", you really do push yourself when you ride your big bike. I have seen it IN THE SAND and also splashing it around over those stream crossings just recently. Can't wait to see where you take your big bike next.

GUILTY GUILTY verdict received - all good riding over 800kms in a day, (which I love to do) but these parking offffs  at the end of and being hauled off the tarmac by overseas visitors???
When I attended Aaron Slight track day at Taupo just one of the things he taught me AFTER I had breathed in his exhaust fumes from my session on the track with him whilst following in his wheel tracks - he taught me tht riding the bike was only part of the adventure, or in my case misadventure??? "Looking to where one parks the bike and exiting the car park in an upright position also the successful completion of your Adventure SUE??? " Just one of the things I remember him saying to me. Being adventurous one must look to also attend to these finer points on any adv ride.

SPOTLIGHT TIME - this blurb I wish to showcase another gentleman who I recently had the privilege of being herded along the roadside by,
Sorry, after vaguely remembering the read from FEB issue of K R trax were made to the stack in the lounge and it did not take long to flick thru and spot JESSICA proudly on display amongst the pages.
NAME SUPPRESSION: (New Club Policies) You will need to read the attached link to divulge DETAILS - :nono:
Our recent PORONUI visit - the small XT was fortunate  to be herded along our pumice tracks most of the day and heading thru the forestry the twin-turbo-boostered lighting system the big GSA boasts came into its own. Riding after the sun has gone down no prob for this bike and owner. With Xmas not too far gone now the bright lighting system thru my day a vivid reminder of the lovely lighting system set-up son Tim had taken so much time spreading round our household tree. No, honestly a lack of lighting on the XMAS decos and maybe more to be added for next year's efforts. (definately the go)
Now, having brushed shoulders (on several occasions) with someone FAMOUS and taking in the many epic events that JESSICA has done

JUST IN PM IF INTERESTED:
Hi riders, Hope you had an awesome Easter,
I am excited to announce that the next Great Australian Ride will commence on SATURDAY 4TH AUGUST 2012.
The start will be at Australia's most Eastern point, Cape Byron lighthouse, NSW. 5.00am to watch the sunrise over the South Pacific Ocean.
This is a one of a kind ride, from Australia's most eastern point to the western most point, Steep Point WA. Riding through the Simpson and Gibson Deserts.
I believe that our freedom is priceless and I invite other riders to come and join in on The Great Australian Ride, or a section of it, from East to West, this is a NON PROFIT CAUSE. A $300 donation is required from each rider, all donation raised will go directly to, The Children's Health Foundation, Brisbane (formally The Royal Children's Foundation). Through the hospital's own Foundation website.
I have divided the ride into 4 Stages, covering the entire length of our huge Island continent. These stages and details have been uploaded to the FB page, 'The Great Australian Ride'.
I would like to make special thanks to those who have and are currently helping and involved with this unique charity ride.
Please bare with me, as I am limited with the amount of information I can upload on this Facebook page. I am currently working on a Website specifically designed for the Ride.
Interested riders please contact me through facebook, happy to answer any question or queries you may have involving this ride.
Happy Travels
Stuart Ball

Cameron Corner(Boarder QLD,NSW,SA)
Innamincka (Burkes memorial)
Cordillo Downs (Aust largest sheep station)
Birdsville
Approx 5-6 days to ride Stage 1. A mixture of road and off-road surface. Stage 1 rides through a wide range of Australian diversity, from NSW to some of Qld Iconic Outback towns. Historic Pubs to Outback Station and a real sense of leaving the busy world behind.
STAGE 2.
Wildlife, thousands of wedge tailed eagles, vast open plains and crossing The Simpson Desert to Alice Springs.
Bedourie
Boulia
Ride east along the Donohue track
Tobermorey
Crossing over into Northern Territory
Onto the Plenty track
Jervois
Alice Springs
Approx 2-3 days to ride Stage 2. From Birdsville to Boulia the road is fairly good, partly road and off-road. The Donohue and Plenty track is all off-road and requires a certain amount of skill to complete. Approx 650km. The key here is to stay alert, ride within your limits and remember slow and steady wins the race! Good off-road tyres are needed as well as a large 20 plus litre fuel tank. This is an amazing area of Australia, very rewarding indeed, meet fantastic characters and ride through a Desert.
STAGE 3.
Welcome to the Red Centre of Australia, riding pass Kings Canyon, Uluru and The Olgas is inspiring. With the red dust of the Outback, white Ghost Gums and vast blue skies, this is a truely incredible ride and you'll be blown away by natures sheer beauty.
CAUTION! This is a tough and challenging section. You will need to be fit and require a strong positive attitude. A sense of humor help...s a long way too.

Uluru
Olgas
Follow the Tjuntinanta Track west
Docker River
Warakurna Roadhouse
Warburton
Tjukayirla Roadhouse
Laverton
Approx 3-4 days. Crossing through massive Aboriginal lands, The Great Central Track is 1200km of remoteness unlike anywhere else on Earth. Experience the true meaning of solitude and enjoy evening bush fires under a blanket of a billion stars.
STAGE 4.
Fourth and final stage!!
Passing through the Gold fields of Western Australia, beautiful historic towns with classic stone architecture. This section is well deserved after the Gibson Desert! A time to enjoy some tarmac and a cool beer at any one of WA iconic Hotels. Rich and colourful plains where 50 metre long Road trains make up this section.
Leonora
Leinster
Mt. Magnet
Murchison Roadhouse
Overlander Roadhouse (Re fuel for final push to Steep Point, 185km)
Steep Point (Australia's most Western Point!)
Approx 3 days.
CAUTION! Make no mistake the last 185km to Steep Point is the hardest and most difficult of the entire Adventure. Remote sand dunes cover the peninsular and it is best to ride as light as possible. Reaching Steep Point to watch the sunset into the Indian Ocean is extremely rewarding. And that the satisfaction is truly incredible and undoubtedly unmeasurable to anything else I have ever experienced. It will change your life forever I guarantee it.
Happy Travels
Stuart Ball
Now to conclude this Adventure, I intend to ride out of Steep Point and head south down the Brand Highway to Geraldton for one night. Then cruise down to Perth and have the bike trailered back to Brisbane. (Last year I rode her back across the Nullurbor, and swore that I would only do it again if I absolutely had too) In Perth I hope to enjoy a final night of celebrations and to raise a glass to all who have donated to the Foundation and all those who have been part of The Great Australian Ride 2012. I gladly invite anyone to join this final night and hope to cross paths again in 2013. Then next morning fly west. Happy travels

Stunning views, excellent and varied terrain, weather p e r f e c t - an adventure was had by all that attended our ride. The Farm had just recently utilised their onsite grader and this had indeed been put to very good use prior to our visit. Entering the property we travelled up a newly graded gravel road that led out meet up at The Farm Sheds. Our Farm Manager met with us briefly and provided us the keys for the various sections of gateings we would need to open and lock behind us. Leaving The Sheds we travelled up a freshly graded 4 x 4 dirt track that had large remnants of big thick chunk sized rocks spewn coursely about (compliments to the farm grader, a job well done) a lovely smooth ride thru here with the odd thick patch, a few short small farmland hills and we arrived at our first lookout point. The views here fantastic. To take it all in magic. Reversing from here the group travelled over many more farmland 4 x 4 tracks that were grass and sand based to lead us out to yet again another big hilltop lookout viewing platform. Stunning views and the most perfect day for it. Down from here over to another section of the farm which led us up and through many quite deep sand traps in some places. This provided for some great entertainment from the group. One area being laced with big thick chunk sized rocks, many left wheel-sliding it down. A break time and much earned after that one area. A nice farm ride from here and more gates over these lush green paddocks we finally make it to the the forestry gravel road sections. For those that wanted a nice little offer up was had for yet again more sand tracks that bordered the pine forest. For those that wished to take in gravel roadings well we got to it. Once we completed these the big 1200cc that accompanied us led us to explore another section of forestry/sand and gravel tracks that led back to our entrance point again. To own a property like this words can't describe. Many could see a career for themselves riding their bikes each and every day on a piece of land like this (hard work every day without going to work) Wow factor and a total privilege to be allowed access for our small group of adventure seeking bandits. Our new club is looking to mix up our rides with gravel road ride outings - then beach runs - then forestry rides - We are looking to become a proper adv riders club looking to build on our skills and to welcome and introduce any new people into the world of adventure riding here in New Zealand. To boldly go and seek out and explore WHERE DOES THAT ROAD LEAD TO - and having the skills to do so

He's dead right about momentum and commitment. Worst thing you can do in sand is shut the throttle. Only problem is overcoming natural fear when the front starts flapping around and then giving it more, not less, gas. I'm still learning how to do this every time.
Also have to say Rog was playing with a major handicap with that ridiculous slick he had on the rear wheel. Was never going to work on anything other than a hard, dry surface. Good workout lifting the bike so many times I suppose.

Our work is now underway for our upcoming RiverHead Gravel Road Explore Ride that we will be hosting in June.
We will look to also post up a back up date if weather is adverse. This ride will be by pre registration - details posted up on our web site next week. This will help with our catering as a bbq lunch is part of your entry to this ride and we wish to thank our local property owner for this. A cancellation policy will also be in place and we will look to move our ride to the following weekend due to inclement weather. RiverHead Forest is a clay based forest and we look to ensure our rides are suitable at all times for big bikes to be riding over. Also there are very many other users of foestry i.e. many horse riders and pedestrians/mountain bikes all of whom we will also come across. More details coming soon. This will not be a trail ride as our ride must be a Big Bike Friendly Ride. We cannot operate this ride as any form of trail ride - all areas that are used for trail riding are to be taped off etc to ensure safety of many other users of forestry. Our ride we will explore the heart of the RiverHead forest and take in the many gravel roads the forest has to offer us. Often these will lead out to the old logging skid sites and views from attop of these hills will be great and will also lead us out to the many locked gates of the many entrances in and out of RiverHead Forest. For those wishing to just take in the atmosphere and enjoy a guided RiverHead gravel road ride (Group 1) - standard dual purpose tyres will be fine as you will only be travelling over standard gravel roads. For our second group of riders, those with above average skills and wishing for that little bit more over our ride, we will provide those riders with several of the OLDER logging routes that are no longer used. You will need to have above average riding skills to do this and will also need a knobbly tyre on both the front and rear of your bike. If you wish to give one of these extra sections a trial please do this at your discretion. All attending this ride will sign our registration form on arrival also and this ride will be by pre-registration also. We will also look to keep speeds down in this forest due to the very many other users that utilise the forestry and we need to be considerate when we come across these people also.

Yep, was a great time. About 875km all up for me I think. Warmer going home on Saturday arvo than shooting down on Friday night. Only left Auckland at 2130, got into Taupo at 0030, having seen the gauge drop to 0.5 degrees.... so not quite reaching 0
Got home at 2000, after you guys carried on we talked shit and slacked around, getting Devil's tyre pumped up (for all his disparaging remarks about carrying so much shit it was interesting to see how quickly he asked for the compressor), then a stop in Rotorua to fill for me (hadn't filled since Matamata the previous evening) and we finally left Rotorua around 1730 I think, and went all the way through without another stop.
I've been through Pureora 2-3 times already... still so many tracks that need tracking, even roads as well...

Excellent ride on the sat - for some of us ADDITIONAL roadside explores were had??? Sunday proved another great explore for the lads - playtime out amongst the trails and herding of wild pigs on the tracks in front of the bikes also

The start of our journey we completed MOST of the many gravel roads that led out to Kawhia for our lunch break. The grader had been over these roads through Limestone Downs and had gone an excellent job of it - a tough ride it was, nice start to the mng, km's of freshly graded gravel roads.:niceone:
More pics coming soon and will be uploaded to our website shortly along with vid cam footage.
Excellent weekend and many thanks to all who came to participate in also - all of you made our weekend what it was - a great one.
The sealed portions of our ride made for very tough going for the many of us who arrived with knobbly tyres. The incoming rain we received on the SAT night whilst we were at AWAKINO made for some hairy moments for many of us. So a slower than normal ride was had on our journey out to visit the many tunnels. Up and over the many saddles and passes also some interesting moments again.:wari:

Good to catch up with the Auckland riders on Sunday. Thanks Sue for organising.
When we parted company after morning tea at the pub we went on to the Bridge to Somewhere via the Old Whangamomona Road.
A fabulous track with a couple of tunnels and a bridge - oh and some mud holes.
Great fun on our smaller bikes, but would have been a bit of an ask on the big bikes.
Looking forward to doing it again in the summer - at the pub on the way back we spoke to some trail riders who did a loop back from the old whanga road via Aotuhia station and Putikituna Road - must do that next time.

Worst thing was that i was not even riding it at the time. Had decided that the boards looked too slippery ( next time dont use dressed timber Gordon ) and i should push it accross.
Got 2/3 of the way accross and the back tyre came around on me anyway at it was a slight down hill.
Decided that i should wait for a hand to get it out as if i tried on my own and failed then the whole bike would have ended up down there and that would have been a mission to remove.
Should have known better than to attempt 1 of Gordons rides on dual purpose tyres. Wont make that mistake again. Knoblies next time.
The challenge sections were a real challenge on the Shinko`s.

Well spotted indeed, this story was an account of Linda G's ride whilst she attended the Station ride that Jim Tim Jess and myself worked hard to bring to the adv community
This ride required many hours of exploring and putting together suitable trails as we often have up to 1200cc bikes attending our rides and what is suited to our DR community may not be so suited to our bigger bikes in attendance. Also, a concern to us, a large area was deemed unsuitable by our hosts, but we needed to seek permission to also add and explore into these areas to be able to gain enough ride territory for our ride. Without Jim and Tim we would not have had these areas added into our ride. Jess has been fantastic to us as a family as she is always on hand to help and to assist. It has been this great combination of team effort Jim and I have had that has aided us greatly in making thse new rides.
I will keep on meeting and making new acquaintances and also look to explore new areas that I have never visited. Life is tooo short to simply drive past these places. NEW CONCEPT: HELLO, ARE YOU HOME??? lol SORRY can't help myself??? The gravel riders want to come to visit?? lol Hopefully I will continue to have my team of helpers and we will be able to provide many more new and interesting places to bring to our adv community.
Having just opened my copy of our Kiwi Rider Magazine, I felt it was in keeping to thank The Team that actually discovered, and put the work into the making of this ride and the preparation details etc. Work does not stop once you get home. Work continues on and many details need to be organised to make our ride the huge success story that it was.
This is my account (ORGANISERS) of THE WORK THAT WENT INTO THE MAKING OF THIS RIDE:

An excellent day and RiverHead Forest provided us with an excellent venue to host our training session
The day was imminent with threats of the big rains and this made for mostly overcast and windy conditions, (which helped to keep us all cool with the many exercises on offer) hot work, the layers were quickly removed
Coming sooon, Sand Training and the basic skills needed to go with............. S O O N......
