There are actually vets in Oamaru.

23rd May 2011, 09:23
Yes there are vets in Oamaru....but as an animal breeder for over 40 years I'm well aware of the varying standards around the country.
I can see someone with an unusual problem wanting a second opinion, particularly as a lot of vet practises now use multiple tests as revenue gathering exercises.

Good luck.

Long story short my Border Collie was for the lack of a better word "flat" (awaiting the run over jokes) and not interested in food etc,hes only 10 months old and usually running around at warp speed. Was smply wondering if i should get him down to the vets asap on Sunday night or wait until the morning and as i posted wanted to talk to a vet if there were any on here that had a minute to spare.Anyways thanks to Stevedg for the offer of advice,Sams down at the vets and they suspect hes got a piece of bone or similar stuck in his stomach/bowel area.:facepalm:Bill starts at $600 but hey shit happens eh,might suggest he gets a part time job to help pay his way.

jeez, that happens.....our old dog had a feed of road tenderised Hare a few months back & suffered the same thing.:blink:We called it Crunchy bum Syndrome.
Our vet gave us parrafin which we dosed her with & which cleared the blockage but it sounds like your dog needed internal investigation. Hope the pup's feeling better:yes:

Good luck, hope it all goes well.
My dog had a 5 1/2 hour surgery for a major blockage a couple of months ago.

luckily my partner works at the vets so we get discounted vet care, it was still a big one over $2K!

Always hard to know what to do if the symptoms are just that they are down, but sometimes waiting will kill them so if in doubt get them in there!

Fwiw just called in at the vets, they had a look and couldnt find any obstruction (good news) but lots of scarring in the intestine/stomach where something had obviously passed through.hes got a major case of the shits and very high temp etc, they have sent a biopsy away just to make sure all is well and are confident he will be home thursday/friday,a good outcome really, bar the bill.

Boody dogs! Eat all sorts of shit, and usually get away with it. Hope the pup feels better by Thursday mate. Forget the bill...

Funny story...

Between properties, I had to leave my dogs where we spent all our time during the day. They had free run of the property and were kenneled at night when we were not there. Everyday I took leftovers and food to them, and fed them before we left for the day.

One day I went to get the food from the car, and the bucket was almost empty  How the hell that happened was beyond me. The windows were down a bit, but not enough for one of them to have got in for a sneaky scoff, a complete mystery. Fed them extra biscuits and went home for the night.

Next day my soon to be neighbour came over to ask if we have been feeding her dog? That would be no. SHe had taken her down to the beach for a run and the dog had spewed up what she thought were really weird coloured worms. She was very worried. Closer inspection showed it to be spiral pasta, tomato and spinach flavoured. How the hell Holly managed to get in my car to scoff the leftovers makes us laugh to this day.

Bloody dogs!

I'm so sorry to hear that. You got him just after the quake last year? Border Collie? Damn, was probably somewhere in this post, but too lazy to look back through it.

Really sorry to hear about the pup, the answerphone message is not the sort of thing I would think of doing, but I guess these days semi-acceptable.

Off topic: we got a phone call last year sometime, middle of the night. I panic, thinking what'ss gone wrong with our parents/family, only to have the person on the other end of the phone taken aback I'd answered. She was calling from the UK to find out the phone number of a neighbour and expected an answerphone as thought it was a business phone she had called. I had to laugh (but not to her, as she was trying to pass on the message a family member had died). She called back two nights later to get the phone number she needed from me - in the meantime I had the neighbours wondering if it was a scam, me thinking I'd lost the plot and that the neighbours thought I was stalking them lol

But I am bummed about the pup, I like animal stories with happy endings.
Do be careful about feeding dogs chicken bones - they are too soft and can do damage. I can't quite remember, but have a feeling lamb bones are similar (I did vet nurse training 100000 years ago).

Shit news there 98'.

I lost my best mate last year, a Cockatoo. She had a wing removed due to a large tumor and when I went to collect her from the vets she was still groggy from the anaesthetic. She looked down to where her wing used to be and simply said "hello??", it was priceless. The other wing turned cancerous a couple of months later and I had her put to sleep. I was never sure of her age (bought her 2nd hand) but I guesstimated it at 15ish, bloody young for a Cocky. I blame her heavy smoking myself.

Oh is that all..My old dog used t eat stones ( flat river bed stones ) ...and was a regular at the vet to have the blockage removed ...
one min fine the other off color , no change for a day or so , off his food but water ok ....

Feel around stomach area , and up by the bottom rib there is something hard ....

Yup 600 dollars and a 3 or four day stay ..... ( happened to him three times )

I wonder how they deal with it in the wild????

I would expect there to be no account renedered for the operation. In fact I would insist there would be no charge for the op.

What a horrible experience to go through, but how cool you have that little fella home. Watch him with that wound too. I had a border collie and he licked and chewed at his belly after a similar operation and managed to open the thing right up. Had to get a bucket for his head in the end as he simply could not leave it alone.

I know that feeling, same but totally different story for me. I moved house and lost my little black cat. She was such a cool animal, I missed her desperately. We did the posters and the advertisements to no avail. She was gone. Three months later I was moving again and having a few wines with a friend, mentioned how sad it was that we had not found Blackie (original name I am sure you will agree), and if she managed to find her way back we would not be there.

She left and went home. About 20 mins later she is in my driveway, tooting her horn and grinning like a mental thing. I did not think she had that much to drink and laughed at her. The reason of the grin? She had found the cat! Saw her running across the road, stopped and called to her and bingo!

I cried like a baby  We still have that little black cat, and those that have met her all agree just how cool she is. I hope you get many happy years with your fella, and enjoy those takeaways

Wow, I saw you'd posted and wondered what you'd managed to say. Didn't expect that, but wickedly cool.
I did work with a guy who was told he had two weeks to live and to get things in order. This was about 6-7 years ago and I saw him a couple of weeks back. He had high cholesterol and it was in no way terminal, the doctor read the wrong chart. I imagine the person who was actually dying was thrilled when got told he/she had high cholesterol and devastated when the truth was relayed.

I imagine the vet is a stunned mullet and should be upset the mixup happened.
But still a great result for you :) (with a lot of heartache in the interim)

Fuck man, want a bunch of angry bikers to ride up from Dunnerz and sort it out? haha,

Fucking vets, we had to put out dog down and we paid to have her cremated, a week later I was helping the old man dump some shit at the rubbish tip, and a big truck pulled up and dumped a while of dead animals, dogs cats birds etc, and to our dismay ontop of the pile was our dog, it had a red coller with a green tag that had our name and number on it, and it was still on her, I was 12 at the time but I can remember my old man dragging her out and putting her in a blanket into the car and driving us to the vet, I remember him telling me to wait in his car while he had a word to the vet, taking the dog with him. I think I sat in that car for a good 2 hours... Anyways enough of my life story, the point I was trying to make was,
