I saw a thread on another message board, about first bikes, and I got to thinking.

I remember my first, a TF125 Mudbug. chrsit I swear to god that thing is the motorcycle equivalent of a Hilux (refer topgear indestructable episode) I just couldnt kill it.

Had literally dozens and dozens since, cruisers, dirt, sports, naked, tourers, dual purpose. Current toy a thou superbike with ~140 RWHP.

Its a lifestyle for me. My life revolves around them, and luckily I married a woman who understands and shares my passion, and and doesnt mind me spending every spare cent on rides, toys, upgrades and rallies.

Truth be told, I dont think I can even remember the name of the first girl who's tunnel I flooded,:gob: But my first bike? I remember the colour, its quirks, the smell, and how many times I stalled it the first time I got on it before I got it moving (seven!!)

What was your first, and why was it awesome?

Same for me. RV90 at age 7. Then quickly up to a KT250. I was lucky enough to live on the hydro projects in the Waitaki valley and spent literally every daylight hour that I wasn't at school on my bike, mum and dad must have been constantly shitting themselves because on reflection, they'd have no freakin idea where I'd be for hours on end.

Almost 30 years of (nearly) constant riding. Working in a bike shop helps feed the addiction despite being lucky enough to have a young family which would otherwise render my passion a distant dream.

Well I had a 50cc as in UK you could only ride a moped at age 16, period. But the lil Suzi was a rocket for her capacity, and I had a lot of fun on her looking back on it.

the first bike i owned
i paid $800 cash for it was a 1990 yamaha sr250
instant freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a couple of low speed oppsies
and i sold it for $1000 1 year later
its still registered and warranted to this day
then i got a 1984 Honda vt250fe that's floating around in someones workshop awaiting parts apparently
then i bought a 1998 Honda vtr 250 man that was a fun bike it would take me anywhere and everywhere
i mounted my own pack rack (made the brackets etc etc) jimcox's boy has that now (with brake issues)
i saw a 600cc on trademe @ a price i could afford and went to ch-ch to pick up the 1995 Yamaha yzf600r
found out it was a x kiwi-bikers , who tracked me down and gave me a full workshop Manuel,
that bike was a money eater! a gravel eater!! and a rocky bank eater!!!!!,

currently on the 1999 Honda cb600 hornet loving it
i still haven't fitted the pack rack sitting in my lounge ( Ive gotta work out how i want to mount it)
done 16,000 on the hornet so far
and Ive only had to replace 1 cylinder head

still i have had no acc claims on any of my bikes and 2 80+km crashes

Yamaha Enduro 100cc in the UK about 30 years ago, horrid green thing, fuses were replaced with silver foil. My biggest memory is of falling of it before I even kicked it into life for the first time  urrrgghhhhh enough thinking back to that nightmare.

First bike I rode was a 250 Bandit (my Dad's). First bike I owned was a Mudbug as well - I loved that bike! Taught my stepson to ride on it.

First one I rode was a Nonda 90 step through with centrifugal clutch at about 11 yrs took that thing up and dower bush track made to walk on heaps of times, got it as far as Lake Taupo from the camp in Mission bay, no roads involved. one night without being caught.
First bike was a nonda CG110, Yella it was. Got a ticket on it to, for riding past all these cars on the motorway on the North Shore on the left hand shoulder outside the white line. Silly me stopped when the MOT copper told me too, he couldn't have caught me in a hundred years.
Never done that again, get DEAF from time to time.
Most fun a Suzi 185 trail bike, in town and on the footpath etc, great times had on that machine.
Now, a part time XV ( read TR1) jam Jam thou still sitting on the operating table in the garage.

JOG CV 50. Briliant piece of kit. Had the restricter taken out and could get up to 60km/hr with me on it...!!!

Mate of mine commented that anyone looking at me would wonder 'if there was a scooter even there'. Funny as fuck that comment.

Yep, great workhose of a scoot, indestructible

yeah....

Don't know the year of the bike, but I was in my early teens and Dad found/was given a James 175 two-stroke. My brother and I thrashed the hell out of that thing, which was the start of the madness.

Kawasaki G5. A 100cc dual purpose bike. It was a chick magnet! A 15 year old schoolgirl watched me unsucesfully try to start it at the bottom of a hill in Oamaru one day and felt sorry for me. We've been married nearly thirty years now.

A 1963 Jawa 350 two stroke parallel twin at age 13..

Same for me, although I think mine was a parallel twin 250, 2 stroke. Piece of old shit really and unreliable as hell, had to crash start it most of the time, but I thought it was great, looked and sounded like a real bike.

My mates at the time all had newish bikes ( early 1970's ) they hated riding with me because they were always being asked to push start it or tow it home from some where. With the benefit of hindsight I wish I still had it now to tinker with.

Mine was a late 70's early 80's Yamaha DT175 that my old man picked up at a clearing sale. Wasn't in the best nick (no clutch till it was warm ) but I spent hours upon hours punting around the back of the farm. First Road bike was a 1982 Honda CB250N, huge heavy bike but Man, it was fun. Fond memories of riding home after training at night in a lighting storm, scary as shit, but SOOO awesome as well. Seriously felt like I was flying. Bikes have been in my blood ever since :wings:

Last year, at the age of 61, I got my learner's license and bought GLORIA, my 2005 Hyosung GV 250. Today I turned over 17,500 km in 14 months on her on the way back from Auckland. Having a ball.

Uhh this is a cool thread,
My first bike was a wee Chinese knock off 50cc Honda mini trail bike, I was about 8 or 9 and got it for my birthday, I rode it for the first time around the backyard and have it too much gas and rode it into the trampoline, got it all tangled up and dug a huge hole in the yard, kinda scared myself off it when I rode it int oa tree at a good speed, took me another 4 or 5 years to get back on the wee thing and road it around mac bay when I done the paper run.. Also managed to dump it on the road and burn the hell out of my leg.. (was a little squid then).. Sold the bike for a little bit of money and that was it.. a few years Rolled on and I was 18, working at work and relying on the olds to get me to work and back, "F*ck this" I thought and I got myself a wee 49cc scooter, Thrashed it about the place and even managed to carry four 24packs and 6 bottles of bourbon on it from one end of town to the other, Also rode it in a Tshirt and jeans not shorts this time, lernt the hard way when I hit a wasp at about 60km and it lodged itself in my arm (im severely allergic to them) and I swelled up like a balloon..
I had it for about a month and decided it was farrr too slowwww and sold it on and got a loan for a Honda CBR 250R .. by far the best decision of my life to date, its left me with some debt but I dont regret it not for a min, while trawling trademe for a bike I seen a VFR400 NC30, and then a CBR 250, I seen the NC30 and was in love, just wanted the bike but settled with my learner legal 250. I had it for about 7 months and in that time I managed to have my first oopsie which surprisingly Caused literary no damage to the bike. And also decided at the 7month point I was over it, too slow..
So I began to look at bikes again, I seem to look everyday If I win lotto Id have a a carpark dedicated to the bikes I wish I could have, but I found the one I wanted and I set off to the bank again to sort my shit, and here I am now, With my Honda VFR 400 NC30, 'Spitfire' a bike I can spend time on and make it my own, a bike that I enjoy riding everyday, I havnt had much of a chance to ride it anywhere besides home and work daily but Its amazing,
Riding a bike isnt about the noise, its not about the looks, its not the cool factor, its the freedom of the road, in a car you are restricted to a lane like a train to its tracks, on a bike you have all the freedom you want to move within the lane, to create your lines, to visualise the corner, IMO a bike shouldnt be locked up in a garage and brought out just for sunny days, it should be loved.

'71 TS250R at age 15 , always wanted a DT360 but they were the 'creme' and far too much grunt for a 15 year old...and too many $$ , not long after getting my Drivers license in the old man's HR Holden, 3 speed and 186 under the bonnet , no radio or airconditioning, one speed wipers and wind your windows up manually please...

:woohoo: Ha ! I still have a 1979 DT175. It's quite tatty, but goes well - still ridden semi-regularly around the Hutt Valley hills and Akatarawas. I might have to do some resto work on it one day.... (anyone got a straight(ish) petrol tank spare ??)

First ride was a Honda mini trail that belonged to family friends. Went around in circles 3 or 4 times (gathering momentum) then rode it into the side of the shed. I was about 5 or 6 at the time.

1st bike owned - 1974 Honda CB100. Reliable as hell and got me started on an adventure that has continued both on and off-road for 30+ years. :scooter:

Xr80, KDX200, GSF250, TL1000s.
Who'd have thought a tiny little PW50 could get so exciting?
That takes care of the big 4 brands.

At 16 in the UK a Yamaha FSIE (fizzy) expansion chamber - clip-ons - single ring race piston - ported head - sinsle seat conversion - marlboro paint scheme..... saw 64mph on the speedo once (100 kph) Used to burn plugs out about every 100 miles...never melted the lightweight piston just the plugs (used to carry 2/3 spares in the tool kit)
Went for a 250 MILE ride on it one sunday afternoon coz i was bored. A gale force headwind on the way home with rain..... the longest day.
Always wanted a Garelli Tiger but they were like "rocking horse shit"

A Yam RD350lc which had 250 stickers on..... fooled my parents and the law for 2yrs with those stickers.
A Kawa GPZ900 known as "the hinge" due to the fact that the chassis felt like it had onein the middle. Fast bike but hated corners.
A Gsxr 1100L which i drag raced - road raced - toured europe on - and crashed more times than i can imagine. An awesome machine.
One of the first Ducati 916,s spent more time fixing it than riding it - took it on a europe trip once...soon as air temp went above 30deg it refused to start..... try constanty bumping a v twin in leathers and 40deg heat.. never again
Aprilia RSV ..... faultless
Triumph 675.... raced it - crashed it... currently re-building it... love it.

Have rode some other awesome rides including a GSX1500 spondon turbo with nitrous - road legal - wth flat bars...MAD (wheelies....oh wheelies)
A Hayabusa turbo with 500hp...... fucking MAD
A ex LAPD MotoGuzzi 850 T3 (like the won on CHIPS tv show) around western australia - Borrowed it from a mate in Perth for a few days - gave it back 26000km &5 months later (a good mate)... only problem was a broken clutch cable. (gained a lot of respect for guzzi,s on that trip)

Would love to have them all in a garage to bring back some great memories..... except the gpz 900 that was piece of shit:shutup:
