I wouldn't have thought you'd need to go that far to find a good road to ride anyway..

I find up and then down works best, keep going till you run out of fuel, and lubricant..i mean oil.

Minimum hazards? just don't try to give yourself a frosty one :shit:

And it doesn't matter everybody has their own style, be who you want to be..

the road after thames can be a bit wet in the shadow and you might find the odd fallen tree brunch. from "C" it rises and it's all dry :D - be careful with "D" it's somehow deceiving... after "I" there will be some tight corners as well as after "N".

good fun!

Yeah and watch for truckers, campervans, falcon and commodore drivers, and idiot bikers coming the other way on the wrong side of the road in the narrow bits.

Nice enough scenery though if it's high tide and you like still water.

It's no fun crossing the centreline - that just REDUCES angle of lean, and why the fuck do that?

I choose not to ride the West coast due to too many cars etc with trailers/boats cutting corners etc.
From Tga side I prefer: Tauranga>Waihi>Whangamata>Tairua> through to Coromandel town....then reversed but all the way through to Kopu> Paeroa> then either through to Okoroirie or back the main route

Yeah Mavis says its nearly all 50/70k speedlimit on the west side as well. Normally I do really like a good slay of the traffic, but I guess there will be plenty of that on the east side.

Just to contravene everyone else's posts :D

I like the west coast part, find it a good way to unwind after concentrating pretty hard for the east coast and coro hill. Unwind a bit, keep it to your side and enjoy the view - magic in the mid afternoon, stop for a coffee at one of the shoreline cafes.

Although in saying that I've only done mid week coro's so I probably haven't seen the corner cutters etc

I'd do 25a from kopu, waihi, paeroa, then 25a from kopu again, whiti, coro, thames.

No, but it's a narrow, windy, tight piece of road with no room or runoff, and shitloads of little villages every few k's, and usually plenty of traffic. The hill at the top end just before coromandel is cool tho.
Din's idea is pretty cool, may try that myself if I ever go out there again.

If I'm going to do the whole loop I go anti-clockwise - so as to be on the side of the road away from the water between Coromandel and Thames. That way, when a car appears on my side of the road, I get squashed against the vertical face instead of diving over the cliff and drowning in the sea...if you prefer to drown instead of getting squashed, go the other way...personal preference y'know.

DIN's idea gets another vote from me. I've done that not so long ago and its pretty damn good. Not a bad idea to go to Waihi and then up through Whanagmata etc on the way North and then come back over Kopu on the homeward bit. That way you get two tasty bits at the south end.

I'll probably be doing the same next week, put in a day leave so I don't have heaps of traffic/idiot bikers etc.
Will probably do a standard clockwise loop (already done clockwise, albeit in shit weather) from kopu around to waihi and then either follow SH2 back to kopu, or head back where I came for the Whangamata->Kopu ride.

matdaymon
8th June 2011, 17:00
I've only ever done it anti clockwise as my leaving point is my parents place in Whangamata.

Head north through to coromandel having a ball. Then have a nice relaxing time enjoying the west coast scenery before having another blast over the kopu hills back to Whangamata. Then its time for a beer and a good wash of the bike.

I plan on doing it anticlockwise next time which hopefully will be around the 20th of june weather and finding a job dependent. Looking forward to the hill from Coromandel to Matarangi.

The answer to everything is in FAQ, top left of the page,Here ya go our kid:

A Senior Member is a user who has been a member for at least 140 days, has at least 240 posts or 365 days and 120 posts and has a positive reputation. Once a user is a Senior Member they are able to read who sent them Rep and exchange bling for goods such as Ice creams and party hats.

Having done it both ways, it's great either way. Anticlockwise will give your brakes, wrists and neck a workout coming down towards Coromandel, but certainly get at least that far before turning back via Whitianga. You'll miss some nice scenery otherwise.

The Thames to Coromandel side is fine for taking it easy after the ride around the top with some great views. Just be prepared for the traffic and ride very conservatively from about halfway down.

Haven't done the loop on a bike but have driven those roads on 4 wheels. Don't fancy the Kopu - Coromandel road either way. But the hill east of Coromandel looks great, pity you have to either drone up the west coast or dawdle through all those small towns on the east coast to get to it.

From Tauranga I like to take SH2 to Waihi Beach (maybe take a side trip up Old Highway at Whakamaru), there's a nice cafe there - The Porch. Then head out of the other side of Waihi Beach as if going to Waihi, turn right onto Trig Road and go through to the Waihi-Whangamata Road (turn up Landlyst Road about 200 metres from the Waihi-Whangamata Road and have a look at the Waihi Academy). Through Whangamata to Hikuai and head over the Hikuai-Kopu Road. Go through Kopu towards Thames, there's a great cafe at the garden centre opposite the airport.

Head back through Kopu, over the Kopu bridge and back to SH2, head back to Paeroa, turn right over the bridge and follow the road to Te Aroha. Go through Te Aroha onto the Old Te Aroha Road which comes out close to the foot of the Kaimais. You can drop down to Okoroire for a burger. Or head up over the Kaimais home. That's my mini-Coro loop.

Clockwise -> Paeroa, Waihi, Whangamata, Tairua, Coroglen, gravel to Tapu.
If I'm in the mood up to Coro Town, then across to Whitianga before heading back down on the east.

Otherwise the substitute the Tapu-Coroglen road for the 309 but only if it's been dry for a few days. Doable on a sportsbike too.

From the times I've done the Coromandel, pretty much everyone here has said sage advice, I'd just like to repeat how I avoid riding it in the weekends and on public holidays.

So, if you can, ride it when all the dingbats and moto GP wannabes aren't!

Rode it counter - clockwise last Tuesday
Was a pretty good ride. Bloody cold if you didnt have the winter gear though, even in the sunshine. Also if you are doing it counter-clockwise this time of year be prepared for encountering a fully laden forestry truck with a bunch of logs on the back mid corner whilst avoiding a slip on the road :gob:

Mate I drive a semi down the coro in the weekends and I'll probably never ride the coro again in a manner I've previously done on my sports bikes. Tairua hill especially not to mention SH25 Whangamata-Wahi. I chucked a vid up on youtube the other night you probably wont find it interesting but you can see how much us truckies need to cross the centre line, I cringe everytime hoping a bike isn't coming round a 25 kay corner at more than twice that but it's still a good challenging drive/ride that I enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc7dgydF7g4

personally I prefer clockwise as you dont get as much shit falling onto the road off the hills.

My flatmates and I just did the loop the other weekend. We went anti-clockwise. I've been clockwise up to the coro township and back and enjoyed that a year ago. This last weekend though I only seemed to enjoy the uphill climbs. Downhill for some reason didn't seem as fun and the rest of the loop was just dodgy at the best of times. Mind you the conditions weren't the greatest during that weekend.
