Advice on worth of a GN250 wanted

A friend is moving house so his Wife is making him sell his GN250. I'd appreciate advice on what's a realistic price for it.

It's a 2004 GN250E, I think. (Bought new off WMC).

Some (as honest as my memory can make it) description:

1. It's been dropped a few times, so a few things like the rear indicator brackets are a little bent, but it's basically "straight" as far as I can tell.
2. It's missing it's right hand side cover, and (I think) the knob off the indicator switch.
3. Some buggers stole his rear indicators one night, so it has Kawsaki Z1000 indicators bodged onto it. (I'm to blame for the bodging).
4. The events of 3. led to battery issues (they stole that too, and ripped wires out) but last time I looked the bike was going. (I got new wires off trademe). Battery may need a re-charge, though.
5. The seat has a tear, but he has a 2nd seat (off trademe) that's "better". (It's ripped too, but has been repaired).
6. His tensioners are full-out and the chain is still a bit slack, so probably needs a new one. (I can't judge the sprockets).
7. Tyres OK, for what they are.
8. Most chrome is a bit spotty.

It had a warrant before it stopped being used (I think the events of 3. above led to my mate getting fed up with it) and its rego is currently on hold.

Kinda hard to say sorry man.
Perhaps its better to spend $100 getting it right, if the motors in good nick, and the tyre/chain/sprockets are 'ok', and it passes a WOF....it would be in the standard GN price range for a 2000's model - 1200 to 1500??

Why would she make him sell it? Doesn't sound like it would be worth much - I am not trying to be a smart-arse here.... I doubt he would get much for it - better to keep it I'd say, and use it as a cheap commuter.

I agree, thats a bit to be done and there are a lot of GNs about that seem to be fine going cheap. Maybe worth spending some money/time on it gatting it up to WOF standard.

Yeah, it was being used as a cheap commuter, but he's not arsed about fixing it, and plans to get a new bike later (when all the mortgage & house building stuff gets out of the way).

I'm considering taking it off him, fixing it up myself, selling it, and then giving him the money. (Coming soon: a new "can I borrow a trailer?" thread).

Or, for the difference between "as is where is" value and what it might be worth, maybe it's a good idea to take it to TSS (it's in "the valley") and just pay them to get it to going & warrantable condition. But that's why I'm after these clues as to value.


(Or maybe I can advertise to find the guys who stole the bits off it, and offer them the rest of the bike...)

I'd suggest another option, browse tardme for spares, there are frequently s/h spares or dismantlers advertised there, or contact Bryce at buckets and bits Naenae, He has a website. TSS will put it together for you, but your looking at about $100 pr hr labour. A 2004 ginny will likely be one of the chinese made ones, seems rusting chrome is common for them. As is?? I'd offer around $600?? as a starting figure. It's gonna cost to replace those parts!!! new chain and sprockets, battery and other parts will soon add up.

I don't think consience comes into it, though. Whoever buys it will be told exactly what's up with it. (And I really don't think what's needed to make it warrantable and usable is all that much. New chain, charge the battery. Making it "showroom" would be another story...)

$600 or so, i've bought slightly worse off cases for around $400 (older and a bit crustier). A few parts and a bit of tinkering and it will net a few hundred more
