View Full Version : Promoting helmetless scooterists

On the back of a bus today I saw the below advertisement.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D1IEBuhtltM/TdRmqQbrijI/AAAAAAAAABw/Zlmu_xA5vSc/s1600/Larry%2BCrowne%2BMovie%2BPoster.jpg

I'm not usually one for worrying about advertisements, I'm not one of those people who complain about "bugger" in an ad, or kids driving or things silly like that; but in this case, I'm seriously considering writing to the ASA or even ACC.

Maybe I'm just in an antagonistic mood, but it just seems really irresponsible to, all be it indirectly, promote riding your scooter, at speed without so much as a helmet, let alone gloves.

I don't think you could get away with advertising like this if the focus was on "happy beautiful and cool" people dragging on cigarettes any more, for the same reason, as a society we don't want to subconsciously promote it.

It's a movie ad .. I wouldn't worry about it .. everyone knows that it's illegal here to rider without helmets even on scooters

In Melbourne there is a mural outside a cafe of a guy on a scooter with no helmet eating an ice cream while riding. On the other hand, this morning I saw a guy on a scooter wearing a racing jacket with a massive back protector and everything.

Is it actually illegal to ride without a helmet in the country the movie was made in? Not that it matters cause it aint real life. I would also like to know how they could actually promote the two main actors without showing their faces?

Its an american movie, its america who cares,

Besides your not required to wear a helmet if your travelling below 30km/h, most scooters struggle 50 haha

Besides your not required to wear a helmet if your travelling below 30km/h

Is that for real? Never knew that.

Edit to add: really? You can't ride a push bike on the road without a helmet, and I doubt many push bikers go much more than 30k's an hour.

I thought the exact same thing, let me find you the link, watch this space.

I take that back, I missed the 'And'

However, you're not required to wear a helmet if:

you're on an all-terrain vehicle, a motorcycle, or a moped and
you're travelling up to 30 km/h, and
you're travelling from one part of a farm to another on the same farm or an adjoining farm owned or occupied by the same person
you're on an all-terrain vehicle, a motorcycle, or a moped and
you can prove you're a member of the Sikh religion, and
you're travelling up to 50 km/h.

Personally I wouldn't get on a bicycle or a motorbike without a helmet, regardless of what speed I intend to do.

I rode around several times last week, without helmet, and the local enforcement officers didn't give a rat's arse about it.
Obviously safety-sunnies, shorts, runners and t-shirt are sufficient. Amazingly I didn't crash or die either, without atgatt.
Fuck you verry much, Nick Smith.

Lets get all upset about Gin Wigmore's video of her riding a full sized motorbike without a helmet. Ok it is obviously an old fashion moving screen, stationary bike shot, but should have the NZ Govt have helped pay for such dangerous video. :girlfight:

Three things:
1) He's wearing Sunnies and if they can prevent pregnancy then they should cover him in a fall:cool: unless they're not Ray Bans

2) Tom Hanks is Chuck Norris' 2nd cousin twice removed so he would never crash, he would simply stop riding it in an entirely dramatic fashion whilst deftly retaining perfect hair. No gravel rash because the gravel knows better:bash:

and 3) if I had Julia Roberts on the back of a scooter, ATGATT would be the last thing on my mind!!!:bleh::eek::eek::eek::bleh::brick:

But then what would I know i'm not a grammy, academy award winning millionaire with perfect hair:laugh:

didnt you just the other day wank off at someone about not being a fucking pussy, and how they should just fucking test ride their crashed bike to test their crashed bike to see if it wobbles or shakes to find out if the forks or chassis were bent?
You should see a doctor man, Bipolar is a serious complaint.

PS: There's a difference between telling scooter riders who are not known for general intelligence that they should ride around without helmets, and telling a motorcyclist that a test ride of a bike that looks straight is a good idea.

I'm from Kansas, not a helmet state (like a great deal of them). I only wore a helmet when leaving town and doing highway speeds... Other than that you turn your ballcap around and take off.

Oddly in Kansas you don't need a helmet, but it's illegal to ride without eye protection. So I would never ride without sunglasses, or clear glasses. Haha

I rode around the neighborhood here in Brisbane the other day, and people gave me the most shocked and dumbfounded looks. Couldn't help but laugh.

But come on it's a scooter on a movie poster. The thing is like 50cc... You're probably more in need of a helmet when crossing the street. (kidding)

More exercise, less donuts. I used to average 30kph for 2 hours on training rides (in the country so up and down hills). Topped my bicycle out at 85kph. That felt bloody fast

Ok, so I might have been training 5 days a week, and weighed 30kg less... but that doesn't mean anything does it? Then I found engines... I like engines.

Re ad... there are bigger issues in life
