View Full Version : Group riding attitudes - Upcoming daylight saving 2011/2012

This evening I looked back over one of my summary blogg entries:
A Review The End Of Daylight Saving 2009-2010 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/entry.php/1445-A-Review-The-End-Of-Daylight-Saving-2009-2010?bt=2270)

The review was written when I had just sold my previous bike.

Since that review was written over 15 months ago I tend to think that there has since been a gradual shift in group riding attitude and also focus being made upon positive aspects.

Last year BRONZ - Wellington picked up the ball and ran with Tuesday evening rides for novice and returning riders, following on from 2009/2010 initiatives.

Recently local government council (specifically Hutt City in this region) in conjunction with Roadsafe (Andrew& LynneTempleton) have held Rider Improvement training courses.

While Ulysses also recently conducted a skills rodeo riding circuit in Lower Hutt.

Also I have noticed that "Wellington Riders" has taken the initiative through Facebook promoting a safe riding edict at the start of their Facebook page/site.

Looking toward the upcoming daylight saving period 2011/2012 and the social rides that no doubt will occur, I am somewhat pleased to see that there does appear to be a positive shift in riding attitude here in Wellington.

I sincerely hope that the positive initiatives continue. I will be very pleased to arrive at the numerous social-ride gathering points on my GSR600 this summer in anticipation that group riding will have shifted to another level of collective and individual responsibility.

Enjoy the upcoming spring and summer.
(Daylight saving starts on 25 September 2011)

Oh for those those lazy, hazy, overregulated days of summer. People will have to get their Mums to fill out consent forms for them at this rate.

I too am pleased with the way Wellington Riders is going. It did not start off so well a year ago when Stefan started it up with support from me. And it has taken a full year to begin to get a few things in place, in a positive light. Still got a long way to go, but I am pleased with the progress and direction, as 6 months ago I was at heads with him about it.

You going to come back and take Tuesday rides Guy? You did many of us the world of good just getting out there with other riders, hitting the roads with like minded fresh meat.

Gidday Hitcher and Katiepie.

Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer - Nat King Cole. Let me sing it in my helmet during my rides, trust me you wouldn’t want to hear my singing.

I look forward to the social rides this upcoming daylight saving period. If or when asked by the social group gatherings, I will reserve judgment on any direct involvement in the conduct of the preliminary group ride briefings.

Hahahahahaaaaaaa.

At least on this site our views are not deleted or blocked!!!

"Promoting safe riding edict" - I take it you have not seen (video) or been on any of these rides?

Promoting and actively following the safe riding edict are two completely different animals.

atually, I do agree Clint, and made my post before all this happened. I am not impressed at all, and that takes the group straight in the wrong direction. I will also note that a select few of those riders in charge refuse to attend any training days, like the rest of us do, as they seem to think they are of the level where further training is not needed. I have opinions on this, and am dissappointed with the recent events in there.

It seems that you and I will be hitting the roads when I'm back at 'em again Clint. Miss my old riding buddy, on those great rides we had right through last year.

I have been banned from the group. Maybe because I suggested that the video would make great evidence for the police...

If they wish to post video on an open group of riding that is IMHO absolutely shocking, then they deserve anything that comes their way :Police:(Including big fricken trucks)

The riding behaviour was one thing. We have all fucked up from time to time although, I'm pretty sure I have never forced someone off the road. What got up my nose was the way it was handled on FB

This is ongoing apparently. Karleen didn't know that all this was going on and asked where the (mentioned in other posts) video had gone. Someone keeps deleting her posts! If a mistake was made (and I don't know because I didn't see it) this really should be kept available for educational purposes.

Why is this being covered up?

The video was removed from youtube as well. There has been many posts and threads removed. Apparently, all Wellington Riders are equal, but some are more equal than others.

(attached to his itchy throttle wrist by all accounts)

That was the reason he gave Karleen. Like covering your eyes and exclaiming 'you can't see me', maybe he thinks if it's denied enough it never happened?

Funny thing is it would have been a storm in a teacup and blown over, instead all that has been achieved is drawing alot more attention!

(Sorry buckbuck, didn't intend hijacking your thread. Maybe I should start a new one discussing Mr Turners little dictatorship)

Yes - I'm cursed with a good reputation and winsome looks - its a true burden....

But - Even though I still have bugger all idea whats going on here it looks like a decent fight brewing....

To summarise....

Someone set up something that wasnt KB to organise Wellington Rides? (presumably a more select bunch cos the KB rides were too fast/dangerous/uncouth/whatever)

Then - surprisingly - out of nowhere - just when things were going soooo well..... - some one important (in at least the space between their ears and arguably in other places too) did something silly and someone either got hurt or close to hurt?

Now - there is a bit of a cover up going on so....

Its back to KB for a good old moan (hopefully with a name and shame and maybe if we are lucky a good knife fight) so all us erm - 'unselect' types that were causing all the trouble in the first place that caused the select types to have their select place for select rides can have a good chortle?

Arguably then - its all our fault for being oafs and making the select types go to this facebook place? Right?

Wowsers - I'm really glad I'm an antisocial hermit - people are just so much effort...

although I do have an opinion on the Welly Riders fiasco, and having suffered from FB deletes, I will return to Guy's op.
I'v been asked to run theBRONZ learners rides again. Although Im unable to commit to being there every week, I am happy to co-ordinate a team of riders with many years of experience to be ride leaders. I have some interest from the Ulysses Mentors, a great start. I'm keen to hear from anyone here who feels they have something to offer riders working their way through the stages to a full license.
The criteria for ride leaders this time will be a lot tougher after some of the experiences from last season. Still, if you think you have a heart for new riders then please don't be shy. PM me and we can get together for a chat.
O and BTW, Aunti Ratti is not a dictator, just aware of what is needed in a ride leader and unwilling to let inexperienced riders be in charge of noobs.

Just a suggestion but for a starting point - you could send any new riders here...

$20? Crazy bargain! Once they have done that then send them on an on road course.... In fact Andrew might even get funding for that too....

It has its moments Sinny... abuse has come in the form of 'who do you think you are? Bloody middleaged Nana telling me what to do" This from noobs who choose to ride with one hand on the throttle and t'other stroking their dick. The more common one is from 'senior riders' who attempted to take over the rides for whatever reason it was. One of whom listened to the briefing, then stepped in front of me and told the riders what he was going to do to change what I had just indicated...sigh. This will NOT be happening again. Sadly, I'm not a hardarse, but by crikey there are times when I wish I was!
And I agree, losing one would be very hard, touch wood not happend yet. Hence my need for riders of maturity and with the right attitude to do this. It's not for everyone. The reward comes from hearing that what we have done has helped a rider gain confidence and make progress.
