View Full Version : DO YOU DONATE BLOOD?

Just read the update on Stone Chucker and it mentioned he is having a blood transfusion.
I was wondering how many of us actually donate blood. I started myself a few months ago. I had been meaning to do it for ages, but didn't get my bum in to gear.
With what happened to S.C, maybe that will prompt others to think about it. Each donation can help up to three people.
Not everyone can donate as there are several criteria to be met.

I always do when I am not sick/not meet the criteria :)

Edit: actually I remeber I am not eligible to donate anymore :oi-grr:

Works two ways, when you wake up in the morning you feel the bee's knees - and it can help someones life - the question is, why not even try give blood (within reason) :S?

I used to in Pomland, but I'm not allowed to here. Comes of growing up around all those mad cows.

Technically I'm not allowed to ever.

I also don't see a law change being done any time soon to fix that.

I know the deal, I really should because it is part of my work and all but.. I can't.

Did when I was at school, however I don't think I meet certain criteria now...

Used to, and still would if they would allow me. But because I hail from the UK, I've been designated a mad coobeastie or something.

I'd love to but can't. Too much insulin in my bloodstream apparently.

Damn Type I diabetes.

yup, and funnily enough I didn't start doing so until I was in Canberra and got back onto bikes.

I always did...but after some years in UK they no longer let me.
Seems like they are missing out on an awful lot of good blood because of that. They need to get a test real quick that can detect Mad Cow.

I dare say I would if I could, but I come from the UK so they don't want my mad cow blood :weird:

Since I was able to, normally my blood is marked for baby packs and sometime they ring me up and have me on standby for busy times

I only go for the biscuits

Same with me. Although it's a usual state of affairs for me to get up from dinner and stagger sideways into the wall, one of these days it may not be for the usual reason....

I would donate if there was a way of extracting the blood without using a needle

I donated regularly for several years but the last couple of times I have been put off by 1, every increasing paperwork and criteria (been to the odd malaria zone) and 2, they cant find my veins very easlily. Last time every staff member had several goes poking needles in both arms....came out feeling like a pin cushion.....havnt been back.

I was donating blood upto 1990. After that I have not due to having worked a few months in England on a farm that had Mad Cow Disease as part of my OE back in 1990. Does anyone now how long it would be before they would think my blood might be safe enough?

When I asked about giving blood they never gave a time limit or anything, they just said I couldn't and that was that. There are tests for mad cow but they're too expensive for the blood banks. It's easier for them just not to take it at all.

I'm impressed. The poll would indicate those who can, do; those who would if they could, can't (for various reasons).

Gave blood last week, have been doing it for years, that was my 56th donation, thought of SC when I was lyin back in the chair, never needed any myself but only too happy to give the spare too anyone who needs it. Coincidentally the local Lions Club chose the same time to donate some new chairs ( I think ) so instead of chocolate bickies there were savouries and flash sandwiches. Didn't need lunch. Apparently the only way at this stage to test for mad cows disease is by testing brain tissue. Any volunteers ?
